After a near death defying experience getting to the Kandalama hotel from Columbo airport, we were very dissapointed to find money had been stolen out of our hand luggage within 12 hours of arrival. The only people to enter our room were the cleaners. The hotel manager Priyan Wijerathne was all but useless in explaining the theft and returning our money. His answer was - I'm afraid there is nothing I can do, you'll have to claim on your insurance when you return to the UK. Other guests claimed that they too were missing items of clothing that had misteriously dissapeared since they arrived.
To be honest, the hotel was OK. The rooms were in need of decoration but clean. The hotel staff were friendly but we were always wondering which one stole our money. I certainly wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone, the surrounding area was beautiful and interesting but because of our experience it tarnished our experience and opinion of the country.

My husband and I went to Sri Lanka and the Maldives on honeymoon and stayed at Amaya Lake Resorts which were lovely.

We had heard that the Kandalama Hotel was lovely to look at and had great food so we headed over there one evening for dinner. We opted for the Sri Lankan buffet which was very mediocre at best. The hotel itself was nothing to rave about - it wasn't a patch on Amaya Lake Resorts - I certainly wouldnt stay there.

I loved this hotel, probably one of the best I've ever stayed in. How many places do you get monkeys come visit your balcony every morning? Only down side was you have to eat in the hotel as it's miles from anywhere and it's only buffet - although a good buffet, would recommend that rather than trying to go out.

If your in Sri Lanka definitely one of the places you must go see. Well deserving of its 5 stars.

Spectacular hotel in the forest with spectacular views of the rock temple.

Couldn't fault the place except for the access road maybe.... but that adds to the experience.

Also probably one of the best views from a bathroom you'll ever see.

Oh and typically fantastic Sri Lankan hotel food.

Stayed in the deluxe room for two nights(on tour of Sri Lanka)

This hotel is located in the mountains.
This is a must for nature lovers. Lovely scenery, fresh air.
There are 2 wings , we were on the wing that faced the rock fortress. Sunsets were amazing.

Check in was fast, served a cold drink and cold towel.
The room was big with a comfortable bed, sitting area and a private balcony overlooking the hills.
The bathroom/shower/jacuzzi was amazing. Using the jacuzzi after a long day of touring was great.
The room has A/C and fan, with the controls for the lights/tv/radio located on the bedhead.

The hotel was very clean and there are 3 pools. The main pool, the infinity pool had a great view of the surrounding areas.
There is also a rock pool on the 6th Level, it was very secluded and the 2 nights we were the only couple in the pool at times.

The restaurant was buffet and the food was of good quality and variety, especially the desserts.
Each night was a theme night also so there was something different each night.
The waiters were a bit too efficient, when we took our last mouthful of food the plates we promptly removed.

This hotel is in a brilliant location, good for tours:
-Dambulla caves
-Rock fortress
-Elephant jungle ride

There were monkeys early in the morning on the balcony. So u must lock the sliding doors as they can open them.

I absolutely loved staying in the hotel and would stay again.
