“Architect designed hotel built to blend into surroundings”
Reviewed 5 January 2011

Built into the rock face in the forest with fantastic views over the lake.
Staff are friendly, food offered at the evening and breakfast buffet is good though like many buffets was not outstanding. During our stay the Al a Carte restaurant was closed for refurbishment.
This hotel is an ideal centre to visit Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya Rock plus one of the National Parks
A walk beside the lake will reveal a variety of wild life including deer, monkeys and a variety of birds.
The only downside are the troops of monkeys which can play havoc with the balcony furniture, we were woken at 06.30 one morning with 14 wrestling on the balcony. We were reluctant about using this area on the grounds of hygene and safety. They would approach if sitting on the balcony and could be aggressive if shooed away

We stayed for 2 nights in a luxury room in Heritance Kandalama. The architecture of the place is unusual but not particularly suitable for those with young kids. There are monkeys all over the place - one chased us till we ran for shelter to the main hotel. There are no kiddy amenities or open spaces for children to run around. The food was just about okay, but pretty over-priced. What really put us off the hotel was the pathetic response to our complaint that there was no hot water in the bathroom. We complained over 4 times from 6 in the evening till 10 pm. Each complaint would get attended to by one engineer, who would come, turn all the taps on, look foxed and disappear. Then there would be silence till we complained again. Over the evening we were visited by 5 engineers, but the water stayed cold. While checking out I complained to the manger and got a weak apology in return. As our van began exiting the premises, someone ran up and thrust a bottle of jam through the window, as compensation – that feeble gesture was even more annoying – surely when a hotel of this stature should ensure good service, and have a better approach towards dealing with guest complaints.

We made a special trip into the dark jungles of Dambulla and rickety roads to get to this much talked of hotel. Thought the frontage is quite spectacular and famous, i would not consider staying there for the service or the food! There was also something dying over the front driveway or some garbage that needed to be cleaned up.

The food was so dissapointing and very overpriced. Very small menu too outside of the obligator 'buffet'. What I ordered a la carte was not at all what was described on the menu, a scrap of processed cheese and a sliced franfurter at London prices!

Where we stayed nearby was outstanding by comparison...the Habarana Lodge. A separate review on that.

The design of the hotel and its location are absolutely stunning. The swimming pools in particular were fantastic. Rooms were of a good standard- though could do with brighter lighting. The food though was very poor and extremely expensive. The desk staff/management over-promised and under-delivered. More of a hotel for tour groups than for families overall- it had a tour group ambience.

Lets get things straight this is a fantastic hotel which has been designed to fit into the environment, the bats at night were particularly cool! But there are some downsides.

- It is very isolated and therefore the hotel can price high and does. For example the only transport available is the hotel's own, no taxi's no tuk tuks allowed anywhere near so if you have no car you have no choice but to pay very high prIces to get to Dambulla town or visit Sigiriya.

- There is a monkey problem, nice to look at but they can get a bit aggressive.

- Buffet food is disappointing - I was hoping for something more local than a Mongolian selection.

- Finally the British Manager conducts his business loudly and self importantly (beer in a an ice bucket!!) from a table on the outside veranda, I just found this really annoying.

These are small moans but if you are paying top rate the hotel experience needs to match, don't be put off this is a good place to spend a night or 2.

I stayed at this hotel for two nights between visiting the Dambulla caves and Sigriya Rock Fortress.

When I first checked in, I was immediately made at ease and provided a flower and welcome drink and my luggage was taken directly to my room. I was offered a choice of several premium juices and relaxed overlooking Amaya lake.

I booked a superior room which I think is their lowest class of room however I was very impressed. I have been staying in five star accommodation most of my traveling life and thought this hotel was the best value for money.

My room had a rain shower that was made to appear as if in the jungle and it also had a tub and premium toleitries. I had a balcony to eat my breakfast on every morning and they didn't charge me to have the breakfast brought to my room which I appreciated as I left early every morning.

The only downside to the hotel is the bats and monkeys however you are in the middle of the jungle and they are only a slight inconveinence. When Geoff Bawa designed the hotel he didnt want a horrible high rise in the jungle but rather a hotel that blended in.

I also used the spa facility which is run by Six Senses and was really impressed with both the prices and how nice the spa was designed.

For cuisine, I wasnt into the buffet and ala carte was okay if you booked the hotel half board then it isnt bad but I never thought the buffett was good enough for the prices. There are not alot of choices late at night in this area so I would reccommend just booking the hotel half board.

I also enjoyed the infinity pool which I used everyday. I would definitely stay in this hotel as it is a special treat to help you along on those days where sightseeing wears you out.

Enjoy!

Heritance Kandalama is shaped like the outspread wings of a bird, following the line of the cliff from which it seems to emerge. The flat roof and timber pillars support a screen of vegetation that attracts local wildlife. The abundance of real-life animals around the hotel is complemented by wonderful large-scale sculptures within it. A metal owl is suspended outside the main restaurant; wooden elephants inhabit the lounge; a stone cobra uncoils along the terrace overlooking the infinity pool.
