7 room retreat and we were the only people staying there. 110 acre property and farm. It was a little odd being the only people in the dining room but we were certainly well looked after. Staff are very friendly and helpful. They drive you around (if you want) on a golf cart. Pool was lovely but you need the staff to drive you there. Take the insect repellent as we were bitten by tiny black flying bugs. Our first night there, we had the most incredible thunder and lightening storm. Power went out. Staff arrived very soon after to make sure we were ok and to restore power. Food was great, must try the Sri Lanka dinner and breakfast. Great spot for a quiet getaway. WiFi was a bit hit and miss but you are in the middle of nowhere.

The people who transformed an old banana plantation into this wonderful eco retreat really need to be congratulated for their vision. The retreat is a destination in itself- composed around a lake with teeming birdlife in an interesting agricultural setting with a spectacular mountain backdrop. We enjoyed the Kumbuk Chalet which was truly amazing. The staff were wonderful and the food superb, especially the chef's special menu (we had the best lobster ever!). The retreat is well located , close to the Dambulla caves , Sirigira and the National Park. The only downside was that the deck and plunge pool area of our chalet need some maintenance. The plunge pool was also quite cold.

Room tip: Choose the standalone Kumbuk Chalet

Kalundewa retreat was totally magical. When we arrived in Dambulla it’s a hot, busy, smelly through road filled with buses and lorries. You would never expect that 15 mins in a tuk tuk would take you to totally peace and serenity. The wild life is amazing. Beautiful birds and the sunset turns the skies dramatic purples.
The staff were so so kind, hospitable and professional. Chocolate treats so make us feel at home when the thunder storm at night kicked in. It’s was truly magical. Cycling round the grounds and seeing all the wildlife was amazing. The rooms were stunning. You can eat your dinner any where you request!
I would highly recommend this experience

We stayed at Kalundewa Retreat for two nights on our honeymoon in August. Excellent staff - nothing is too much trouble. Very remote and peaceful - lovely place to relax and enjoy the scenery. The Bikes to get around the 110 acre estate were amazing - really fun. SO many private places to sit and take it all in. The design of the rooms and restaurant were very impressive. We would return!

Unfortunately we only could spend just two nights in this retreat. Immensely nice staff. The second day we came back from the Temple Caves (do visit!). They had prepared a dinner for us on a small boat near the restaurant area. The kitchen by the way is extremely good. Rich and creative use of styles, spices. We loved all of it!
