Hotel Coral Rock Hotel by Amaya, which is located on the main street of the town of Hikkaduwa in Sri Lanka, is first on the waterfront. Hotel rated four-star boutique hotel, but my opinion is the lowest rating. The hotel was recently renovated hotel company Amaya and assumed the management.

Rooms at the bit "cold" and not inviting, painted a bright white color, not particularly big, but when sitting, in the evening on the terrace room with ocean view sunset and the ships on the horizon, is a thousand times the level of the hotel. Just play a relaxing and romantic.

At a tiny swimming pool, a small terrace with loungers for sunbathing and steps of the sandy beach and beautiful. Hotel restaurant to get breakfast and dinner at an average. One must consider the money a Diet Coke, standing on 635 rupees, an exorbitant price by any standards. Required to request / require a room with a balcony ocean and the busy street.

Needing a charming and comfortable island get-away to recharge our batteries, my husband and I flew from San Francisco to find this hidden treasure. The stunning sea view, service and staff were professional and attentive to our every need. Since its grand opening in late 2011, the property manager/owners have done a fine job of creating a first-class guest experience at good value. You will not be disappointed. The twenty-hour flight from San Francisco and forty-five minute drive from the Colombo airport to Hikkadua were worth it. We can't wait to return and will bring good friends to join us next time!

Coral Rock by Amaya is a recent refurbishment to the Hikkaduwa stretch of beach. It is a small hotel, dwarfed by the neighbouring Chaaya Tranz. The hotel benefits from a seafront location but be sure to request a seafacing room as those on the roadside are quite noisy. On the other hand, seafacing rooms would appear to be a bit smaller in size.

The pool is tiny and finding a spare deckchair by poolside was a challenge. The hotel lacks facilities such as a gym or spa. Rooms are quite plain and lacking in sparkle, although it could be that they will be improved over time - whilst we were there, staff came into our room to install new lamps, perhaps indicating that the hotel is still a work in progress. Beds were soft and comfortable.

We stayed for three nights over the New Year's Eve period and found staff to be, generally, quite helpful. Our request to change rooms (after having to deal with the noise from the roadside) was also eventually accommodated.

Room Tip: Rooms by the roadside are noisy at night

How can a hotel in a place like Hikkaduwa charge $280 for the same view as others who just charge under $20?!!! How much luxury can they offer that can counteract with the smelly sewers outside and the locals who can't make a change for 2000 Rp? One look and it was enough to make me run and choose a hotel that goes with the character of the whole place which is down to earth and friendly and not snobbish that Coral Rock is pretending to be. Please look at outside of your door!

Room Tip: Just about any OTHER place outside of the hotel on the same beach will offer you the same view for way less and a lot less pretentious staff!
