“Paradise at the end of the road!!”
Reviewed 18 April 2014

I stayed here wi th 3 friends 2 weeks ago It was absolutely wonderful. This is a place like no other in the Land Like No Other! The road up to the Bungalow a a little bit bumpy what is at the end of it is worth all the bumps. We only had time to sty for 2 nights unfortunately. It was peaceful and tranquil, the only noise was birdsong no traffic or any other modern noise!!!! The food was terrific Iresha and her staff- not forgetting Mali the monkey- were so helpful and friendly. It goes without saying that we will be back.

We stayed at Pantiya Estate Bungalow for 10 days in early February - and have been feeling the benefits ever since. Not only did we have a wonderful, relaxing holiday but our health improved there too! The setting was stunning, surrounded by virbrant trees, flowers and birds. The air was clean and we had blue skies and sunshine everyday. Sitting on the verandah outside our room we were able to observe nature throughout the day. This was our first visit to Sri Lanka and whilst anticipating some rest and relaxation in the warmth, we had no idea that our host, Iresha and her staff would take so much care and attention to look after us. Their warmth and kindness enabled us to let go of even holiday cares and concerns as they made life as easy as possible for us. This included chatting to us about the local area and people living there, arranging for us to meet local families and workers on the rubber plantation and organising a visit to the school, where we chatted to the children and teachers - and shared cake. We were able to feel part of the community during our stay. Iresha also arranged trips further afield for us so we didn't have to spend time fretting about organisational issues. The food at the Bungalow was delicious and varied - freshly prepared from local ingredients by Kamal, the cook; Ajith, with great insight and wisdom, produced fresh, natural Ayurvedic herbal remedies and advice for those in need of them and an Ayurvedic masseur came to give massages on site; daily swims in the pool helped to build up our strength; Lionel was always on hand and took great care helping with all kinds of activities and Prakash was our diligant guide. It would be possible to thrive at the Pantiya Bungalow without ever leaving the premises! Thank you to all and we look forward very much to a return visit.

I am finding it impossible to review the bungalow at Pantiya by making comparisons with any other holiday or travel experiences. The bungalow is in a completely tranquil setting sitting high on a hill surrounded by carefully maintained gardens which blend seamlessly into lush vegetation. There is a faded grandeur to the bungalow but it's on a friendly human scale and has clearly been a much loved family home for many years.
In the same way that the gardens blend into the environment, the resident owner, Iresha, slips effortlessly between the roles of genuinely charming hostess, intermediary between her guests and her community, travel guide and facilitator, manager of the plantation and "mother" to anyone who needs her care and attention. Iresha could not have been kinder, more thoughtful and genuinely concerned that we all enjoyed ourselves without being in the least bit intrusive; everyone we came into contact with followed her lead and their behaviour mirrored hers.

On the practical side, you need to know that we had booked the bungalow for 3 weeks in February and had friends and family join us for up to two weeks. For most of that time we numbered 10 adults, a six year old and a four month old baby but we also enjoyed a few days with just four of us and finally just the two of us for two blissful days at the end of our stay. We were all fairly seasoned travellers and none of us require or relish the standards and details of corporate hospitality over the pleasures of a natural environment, characterful accommodation and the chance to get to know a little about more about a different community and way of life. Over and above that we found the food, beds and pool excellent; the bathrooms did their job in spite of the two month drought and lots of problems with water and we were not over-troubled by heat or insect life (the young families had the air-conditioned suites). Breakfast and dinner were invariably a feast of fresh, interesting and varied dishes, with special provision being made for our 6yr old guest every day, and ginger tea and cake were a tea-time treat for us all. Iresha guided us to interesting trips and experiences both on foot, by tuk tuk and in air-conditioned cars and usually enhanced the experience by accompanying us. Agit, Iresha's able assistant, worked tirelessly to keep the water supply flowing and pool in tip-top condition in spite of the 3 month drought which broke during our last few days there. He also quietly and sensitively offered ayurvedic advice where appreciated.

Everyone working at the bungalow deserves our thanks and appreciation but I don't want to close without saying what fun was had most days with the local boys who came to play cricket and watching our grand-daughter blossom in her granny Iresha's home.

Room Tip: The pool rooms are adequate but you will find you can hear your neighbours in the bedrooms and the b...

We had a wonderful time at the bungalow. Our hosts treated us like warmly welcome guests in their home and couldn't do enough to ensure we had a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The setting is incredible and exploring the area a little bit allows for a taste of what seems like the real Sri Lanka. The food was delicious and plentiful and our stay was so restful, we'd highly highly recommend this place. Also great for kids, our 5 month old daughter enjoyed her first ever holiday there.

We visited with our two year old daughter in Jan/Feb 2013. Although the journey to get there can be less than pleasant at times (rough, bumpy and a little bit scary) it was most definitely worth it. The hospitality was amazing, they couldn't do enough to look after us. We had the place to ourselves so could choose to be/sleep wherever we wanted. The pool was lovely and warm, it was like a little slice of paradise with beautiful birds taking an occasional dip. The food has ruined all food for us. It was so good that everything else has been a let down since. I thought perhaps I would get bored of eating so much curry but it was just incredible, we are still talking about how good it was now. They were wonderful with our daughter and happy to play with her and provide the best pineapple we had ever eaten fresh from the trees as well as numerous coconuts. My daughter and I both celebrated our birthdays whilst we were there which consisted of a party with the local village children, dancing and cake and ice cream. It was without a doubt one of the best birthdays I have ever had. We are already planning our next trip to Sri Lanka and it will most definitely be including a stay here.

Lovely to hear from you and thank you so much for your review.
We also had a fantastic time when you stayed with us and specially your cute little daughter stole our hearts!
We are really happy you enjoyed the birthday celebrations with the local children. It was very good of you to spend time with them and give them those hours of fun and happiness as their day to day lives are rather challenging.
Please do come back - we look forward to having you stay with us again.

We spent a relaxing night there after a hectic 2 week trip around Sri Lanka. The Bungalow is located in the hinterland only about 25 minutes from Bentota, but it is so peaceful and tranquil it feels like you are even further away. You can watch a beautiful sunset over the sea, and then see the lights of Colombo in the distance at night.

The Bungalow was built in 1907 and is reminiscent of the Colonial era with everything on a grand scale. The rooms are very spacious with high ceilings and comfortable beds. While very hot outside it was refreshingly cool inside the house, aided by the air conditioners in the rooms at night. The grounds are wonderful and it was very interesting to wander around and take in the sights and sounds of this beautiful place.

Our hosts made us feel more than welcome with true Sri Lankan hospitality and great food in abundance. I highly recommend The Bungalow as a unique Sri Lankan home stay in a magic location.

If you want to experience Sri Lanka rather than be a tourist then this is the place to stay. The bungalow is set on the top of the Pantiya Estate plantation in lush green vegetation with a view out over the valley.
We were welcomed with bougainvillea garlands and a coconut drink after our long journey from the airport.
It was a great place for our family reunion and Iresha, Lionel and Adi couldn't do enough to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. They arranged our transport and helped us plan our outings to Udawalawe, Galle, Bentota, local markets, temples. Iresha came with us on some of our trips and acted as a knowledgeable guide.

The wonder of waking to the sounds and smells of the plantation will stay with me, I wish you could 'bottle it'. Watching monkeys in the treetops from the patio, sharing breakfast of local foods and luscious fruit on the balcony, laughing at the nephews playing 'chuck the chicken' in the pool or playing carrom (local board game) in the evening all added to a very special week of new and exciting experiences.

Yes there was a constant trail of ants in the bathroom, the cockerel can wake you anytime from 4 am, you can hear the local temple horn at 5 am, the DVD player didn't work, the drive from the airport is long (this will be improved as the last section of the expressway is opened), and the road up to the plantation is bumpy BUT you get a comfy bed at the end of each day and a warm welcome each morning.
It is well worth experiencing a truly adventurous holiday of a lifetime.
