We travelled with Mercury Direct, transfer took about a couple of hours as expected. Nice touch, the mini bus driver gave us bottles of water for the journey.
The reception is very well laid out and impressive, we were welcomed by the deputy manager and were given our room which was on the top floor with great sea views. The room was kept very clean and constantly stocked with tea, coffee and toiletries. No problem at all with the room, air con although a bit noisy did a fine job, only gripe is the shower was over the bath.
The food in the main restaurant varied between good and excellent, loads of choice most days. All staff in the restaurant were so friendly and helpful, we had a great laugh although some at our expense as Sri Lanka had just beaten England in the cricket.
The main bar was big with plenty of comfy seats, you can sit outside where there is more breeze. There was entertainent on every night despite it being low season and very few people around. The singers and bands were good but there is only so much of Lady in Red you can take night after night. Like the staff in the other areas the bar staff were so efficient and friendly, we never had to wait for a drink. There is a decent choice (no wine, unless you pay) and maybe the drinks were not as strong as some may want but we could not find fault.
The pool area and grounds were kept very clean, there were plenty of sunbeds to go around. There is music played around the pool which was a interesting mix of 'lift' music to quite modern dance stuff. The sea was rough given the time of year but the staff went out and picked up the litter the tide had brought in.
We upgraded the last 3 nights to the Presidential suite, huge sitting room with sofa, fabulous bedroom and bathroom and a hot tub on the balcony, well worth paying the extra for.
There are a few shops around the hotel and tuk tucks and a taxi always outside. There are loads of trips that can be bought from everyone from your rep, the man on the beach to the local shop owners. Spend about £1.50 and get the tuk tuk to Kalutara South station and take a train to either Gaul or Columbo, its about 45p each way. Despite the tuk tuk driver telling us we'd be robbed etc on the train (assume he wanted the business) its safe, very interesting and views of the coast are fantastic. Check the train times at reception before you go and remember not all of your fellow passengers do actually work in the Tangerine Beach!!
We felt sorry for the staff having to deal with the Russian guests, they were so rude. They tried to flout the restaurant dress code, took masses of food away with them and seemed solely on a mission to get drunk. They were not all inclusive so bought drinks from beach sellers and then sat on their balconies drinking the stuff. We witnessed two Russians having a full blown fight around 5pm one evening in the hotel grounds, one knocking the other clean out. Staff and guests should not have to watch this sort of behaviour.
An earlier review mentions a guy with a white car, we encountered him on our first day, its a Toyota and he is very pushy, be firm but polite and eventually he'll get sick and leave you alone (someone else who claims to work in the Tangerine)
There is a bit of building work going on but it didnt seem to bother anyone.
If we could make a suggestion it would be great to eat outside a lunchtime as part of the all inclusive. Sometimes you simply don't want to go up to the restaurant, maybe a BBQ and a bit salad etc could be put out around the pool bar. It would be a welcome change and maybe cost the hotel a bit less than using the big 'formal' restaurant.
This is our 3rd visit to Sri Lanka and we will go back, possibly staying at the Tangerine, its a nice place but its the staff who make it special.

Room Tip: High floor sea view rooms (406) are spacious and well equipped

We spent 7 nights at this hotel in May. We chose the hotel as we thought it would be family friendly and there would be other families staying there. There were no other kids unfortunately though which was a shame for our 4year old, but she still had a great time playing in the pool.

The hotel has a very impressive lobby and entrance which continues on through to the main bar area. The rooms are a good size, but we had a cot and extra bed in ours for our kids which did mean our room felt a bit cramped. The rooms were well maintained though, although the bathroom lacked anywhere to hang a hand towel.

The gardens of the hotel are very well maintained and lovely to spend time relaxing in. The pool area was ok but was looking a little tired and the chipmunks that roam around the pool are very annoying. Despite signs not to feed them , many of the guests were, and staff did not look to tell them not to. We preferred to lay in huge garden area, but my daughter wanted to be in the pool all the time so this made things a bit difficult.

During our stay there was building work taking place in the coffee shop area which was a shame as it also me staying around the pool area was not as relaxing as it could have been.

We stayed here on a half board basis. Breakfast was nice, but lacked fresh juices and fresh milk. Pancakes and waffles were also lacking, which we have had in other hotels we have stayed in, but there was lots of choice of other foods and fresh fruit and pastries. The buffet in the evenings were ok, Sri Lankan food was excellent, but some other dishes not as nice and the meat was sometimes overlooked and tough, especially the beef. Fish was also slightly over cooked. There was a lot of choice though and nice fresh salads.

The food at the pool bar is very poor, with most dishes being deep fried and over cooked at that. We stopped eating there after a couple of days and went to a restaurant at the sister hotel next door a couple of times which had v good food.

The staff were v friendly and accommodating. It was our anniversary while we were here and they made a cake for us which was a lovely gesture.

The spa at the hotel is really good value and very nice. We had treatments here and felt very relaxed afterwards.

There was music in the bar area most evenings, be it singers or musicians or a dj. The hotel was very quiet while we stayed here as it was low season.

Overall we did have a very comfortable stay here, but the hotel is very old and does need some updating in places. Also for families, there is no lift in the hotel so we had to constantly carry our buggy around the hotel, and the staff never offered to help us when they saw us struggling with it.

It is also worth noting that when we left, the hotel asked for our feedback on our stay so they are trying to address issues that the hotel has and also want to increase their English guest numbers as at the moment the hotel is dominated by Russian guests.

We planned to have our daughters 3rd bday in this hotel along with a day out trip with family. We spoke to Mr. Vass and he gave us two day rooms with a good discounted rate. The staff arranged the bday table and decorated it well. Helped us thruout and even cleaned the place. They even arranged a surprise cake for my daughter! A great place and friendly staff . Rooms were big and clean. Buffet was good too. We enjoyed the pool time and the view of the beach. Would love to visit again....

The Tangerine Beach Hotel was a magnificent hotel, all the staff were terrific, and they couldn’t do enough for us.
They rooms were kept immaculate, all areas (Pool, gardens) were kept very clean
The food selection for the all-inclusive was great; we were spoilt for choices every day.
There are a few shops just outside the hotel (Very basic) you will probably have to take a taxi or Tuk Tuk to the town for more of a selection.
We took a day trip to Kandi to see some sites (Elephant Orphanage, spice garden and the Temple of the tooth relic). The day was long as it takes approximately 3.5 Hours to get there but the Elephant Orphanage is worth the trip alone.
A little pointer for you: - If you’re walking along the main road towards the town centre you will probably be stopped by someone in a car saying that they work in your hotel (they spot the orange band used by the hotel for all-inclusive guests) and are willing to take you here there and everywhere, this is a scam, they don’t work for the hotel

Hotel looks very nice with all the decoration, pond, garden but first impression wasn't good. We have booked our holiday online, standard double room with sea view (there was a choice on website), after we came someone asked (I guess manager) if we want room with sea view, if so we have to pay extra but he didn't give me an answer "how much" just disappeared for few minutes. Of course I told him we did asked for sea view room but he said it has been paid for standard room only. The question is why online they give you an option to choose a room if you actually have no choice.I could understand in busy period if all nice room were taken but It was off the season and there wasn't many people in the hotel. All situation was bit weird, we were under impression that the guy is waiting for us to offer him some money. There was few more awkward situation like you are not allowed to take some fruits to your room. (They confiscated my pineapple, kept it in reception and told us we can take it back home ;) come on...who is going to travel thousands miles with a pineapple in the suitcase...;) Maybe its just a little things but don't make us feel comfortable (in fact makes me feel like pineapple smuggler :) Positive side - food was very good, breakfast buffet - plenty choices, loads of local dishes to try. Cleaning service - very polite, friendly guys. All stay was good thanks to Raja - this is a nice fellow (guide) I have to recommend - he is not part of the hotel team but you can find him in front of hotel or in the restaurant opposite, we bought some excursion he offers and also many time used his tuk tuk if we needed to go to town, fish market, beach, shops. He can take you wherever you want really (reasonable prices),can recommend good places to buy some tea, spices etc., finally shows you local culture and gives you all information you want. We are very happy and impressed with his service, anything we asked for we get it. Thank you Raja - you made our holiday special.

Room Tip: Bottom room was bit damp, Sri - Lankan climate I guess, probably upper floor will be better
