“Expensive and bad staff”

We went here following LE ROUTARD, the view on the lake is nice but the workers aren't. You have plenty of guesthouse in the same area we are advasing you to choose another one. They asked for a early check out. It seemed like they were getting us out as soon as possible. We weren't able to go out after 10 o'clock because they were closing the guesthouse. Price was not cheap for the low season and "additional charges" have been added. Worse experience in Sri Lanka for us.

We stayed in Kandi view hotel during vacation time end of October 2012. The view is awesome! but nothing else. the location of hotel is very high, our taxi could hardly climb there. Room (left side next to jungle): we have chosen the room with 2 huge glass windows (practically glass wall) - amazing view but entire night I could not sleep at all! because of very poor isolation of the glass walls. I felt like I am laying in the middle of that jungle where the hotel is located: all sounds of jungle - night singing of cockroaches, birds, sounds of monkeys and etc. So, it was not pleasant. Cleanness of room: ok,bathroom is not good. Breakfast is Ok. Very basic hotel, for this cheap price it is ok. Staff is friendly.
Regards, Alsu

Room Tip: do not chose this room with 2 glass walls - you will not able to sleep at all unless you are drunk e...

After having difficulty with another property we found Highest View last minute in the Lonely Planet guide. The manager sounded very friendly on the phone and said he had room for 2 nights; there was no aircon but no curfew so we went over and checked in. They were very welcoming and although the rooms were a bit run down and dirty we were happy to have a place to stay. That night we went for dinner with friends and returned at 12.30 with no issue. The following morning we ate breakfast which was fresh and tasty. However when we returned that evening things took a turn for the worst when walked through the reception to our room with 2 bottles of water. The owner called us back to the reception desk and was adamant that we read the terms and conditions of the hotel, which were not displayed at the time of check in. One of the conditions was that no consumables were allowed in the room! He then went onto demand that we were back at the hotel by 10pm although no curfew was stated on the list of conditions. The owner was almost like a different person to the one we met the night before. He was aggressive and unreasonable to the point where we felt uncomfortable so packed our bags and found alternative accommodation further down the street. I see from this website that reviews are mixed and in my opinion it would be directly related to alcohol the owner had consumed as he seemed drunk.

This guesthouse is basic, with little more than a bed, fan, wardrobe and mosquito net in the rooms; however it is clean and pleasant and the views across Kandy lake from the balcony rooms or the top-floor restaurant are fantastic. For the price (3000 rupees for an ensuite room; 2500 for one with shared bathroom) it's great value in Kandy.

The owner, Mr. Thuvan, was very polite and helpful, giving advice on what to see and arranging a great driver/guide at a reasonable price to take us to Sigiriya. The meal we ate in the restaurant - a Sri Lankan prawn and vegetable noodle dish - was good, and the guesthouse's location towards the top of Sarananka road means it's generally quiet and well away from the noise and pollution of Kandy city centre; while remaining only a 15-20 minute walk away from the main attractions. My only negative about this property is the internet access - it's charged at an additional 100 rupees for 30 minutes; however the connection is so slow that many sites take forever to load, if they'll load at all. All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to go back next time I visit Kandy.

The Highest View is located in a nuce spot and offers great views over Kandy. It's also clean and 3000 Rs seemed appropriate for the room. But the owner is a self-important little man with strict rules that he will let you know at every turn while at the same time smoking inside his hotel the whole day. He gets really annoying very quickly and will badmouth everything you do if you don't follow his 'helpul' tips...

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights. We were on holiday and were planning on staying in hotels rather than guesthouses, but were surprised at the costs in Sri Lanka so decided to save a few pounds. We looked around at a couple of other places in the Sarananka Road area, and Highest view seemed the best of the bunch. The room was basic, with just a bed, wardrobe and mosquito net, but was spotlessly clean.
We are experience travellers, having backpacked all over Asia, and in terms of guesthouses this is one of the better ones we have been to. We were charged 2500 Rupees a night for a room without a balcony, which, at about £12, is a lot compared to India and Thailand, but Sri Lanka is an expensive country. We found Tony, the owner, to be very helpful and he was very good to us whilst we were there. He organised tours to Sigiriya, Dambulla and Pinnewala at prices which matched what we were expecting (we compared elsewhere first and they were identical). The two drivers he hired for us during our stay were both excellent, with safe road sense and decent conversation english. I cant speak for other people's experiences but we had no problems with him at all. The house was quiet, with maybe 2 or 3 other couples there at most.
The views from the restaurant were stunning and the guy who ran it was again very helpful and good to us. The Sri Lankan food was good, but the western food was quite poor, but again that seems to be the case in other places too. A 10% Surcharge is generally added to most things in Sri Lanka, both rooms and food. It clearly states this in any decent guide book and is commonplace around the country. If you are an experienced traveller you will appreciate this place for what it is, if you want to stay in a hotel then you will be disappointed - but you will also have to fork out 5x more for the extras.

Really traumatic time staying at this horrible place. Room was okish, crap shower and room open to corridor so could hear everything outside so out 1st thing the next morning (like a few others that have reviewed this place!), found somewhere much better which was much cheaper and came back to collect our bags. We had said we would stay for 1 or MAYBE 2 nights but the weird man on reception said we could not leave as they would be unable to sell the room again (this was 11am during the festival, the busiest time in Kandy). He said they had turned someone away already!
We asked for the bill and said that we would pay what we owed and no more. He got the evil owner who was shouting at us (and stank of drink). Eventually we collected bags and left, leaving exactly what we owed on the counter. The owner came after us shouting obscenities. Not a great way to start your day.
We were also hounded by the 'hotel's' driver the entire time we were there. He stood over us at dinner and breakfast asking where we were going etc. Very pushy.

Room Tip: Go to one of the other hostels!
