“Don't stay longer than one night; ageing and musty hotel”
Reviewed 25 November 2010

We stayed here for one night only, thankfully.

The room was mostly clean but not spotless and had a lingering musty smell.

We got stuck eating here for dinner and there are no Michelin stars in their future.....

Location is sort of purgatory.... not in the town proper nor up in the surrounding hills. To be fair, it is only a 10 min tuk-tuk ride to town.

Overall, we are generally not picky about hotels, but did not like this one. Not horrible but seemed to be about 30 years older than it actually was. Everything was below average, even for Sri Lanka.

Excellent hotel. Value for money. Pleasing service, nice rooms, very good restaurant, clean swimming pool and a nice bar.
Watch out for the tax amount in your restaurant bill. We noticed in a couple of invoices the tax was charged at double the rate than usual. Not sure how many bills we did not notice. But they gave the refund immediately after we complained (may be they were expecting it :))
Apart from this minor flaw, the hotel is a great place to stay.

It's okay if you're spending the day out and come in just for the night. Food is nothing to speak of, and the location not great either.

We stayed at the Devon on an overnight trip to Kandy from Negombo - it was arranged by our tour guide and most trips seem to send you there. The hotel room was fine, nice and clean and quiet and suited the purpose well. Breakfast was OK if a bit cold, but slightly offputting with the ratio of staff to guests watching us eat our breakfast. The other off putting issue was 10 minutes after arriving in our room (after having washed out hands with shampoo as there was no soap) a staff member knocked on the door. He had a bar of soap wtih him and tried to barge past me to put it in the bathroom. I stopped him and asked him not to go in there as my husband was in there, so instead he pushed past me the other way into the room, and told me I could 'keep the soap'! He proceeded to move my things off the bed, that I had just put there, shift the cushions around then stood there wanting a tip! It was clearly a ruse to get some money out of us which we refused to do, and the same thing happened to all the other new arrivals - they were obviously waiting for us to arrive, then come in a few minutes later wtih soap and try and scam money off us. I am all for tipping for good service and helpful staff, but this was taking the proverbial in my opinion. He did absolutely nothing worthy of a tip, and certainly should not have barged his way in to our room. In hindsight I should have perhaps stopped him from coming in, but I was so surprised that he just barged in past me, it was too late. So be warned!

The hotel is a little outside of Kandy, but we got a tuk tuk down into the town for 200 rupees (about £1). Kandy is a nice little place on the lake, but we got hassled quite a lot there, in comparison with Negombo, Galle and other places we had been. People approaching us pretending they knew us 'from the hotel' (then when you ask what hotel, they don't know....), asking for money, trying to give information about the town then wanting money, following you round saying 'I don't want money, I'm just a friendly guide' etc etc. It's a shame as we did not encounter that anywhere else in Sri Lanka. The only ATM we could get to work in Kandy was the Commercial Bank, HSBC and another one did not.

Had an excellent meal at the 'Bamboo Garden restaurant' not far from the hotel, 10 minute walk which we did and felt perfectly safe, or a 200 rupee tuk tuk ride. We had a nice glass of wine and watched the sun set over the lake - it's in a good position high up over the town. The food was fantastic and the staff excellent - we watched Sri Lanka beat India at cricket on the TV with the owner! They were well deserving of a tip, as the service was excellent and we had a godo chat with them while they practised their English on us. Other people we were with said the evening meal at the Devon was 'pretty average' so we were glad we went off-piste and did our own thing in the evening. Highly recommend. Meals were about 400 rupees (£2) and there was loads of food.

One last thing to note - the Temple of the Tooth requires both men and women to cover knees and shoulders. Neither our guide book nor our trip guide mentioned this. You are also not allowed to consume alchohol before going in, again we were not told this, and all sat having a few beers watching the Kandyan Cultural Show before going into the temple....... Man in front of us in the queue was booted out and not allowed in as the guards could smell beer on him.

All in the hotel was fine for the one night we were there, and suited its purpose, but I would not recommend it on the basis of the harrassment from the staff. This was completely unnecessary and let the hotel down.

Stayed at this hotel for 1 night in June as part of a tour of Sri Lanka
Found the hotel to be of a good standard, there was 3 of us sharing a room plenty of storage space for all of us, beds comfortable and nice views from the balcony.
Food was excellent had an evening meal one night and a breakfast the following morning.
Staff were very helpfull, i'd forgotten to take my toothbrush and one of the members of staff went to get me one from a nearby shop which was very helpful and kind
Would deffinately recommend the hotel and stay there again

During my holidays in Sri Lanka a couple of friends, my wife and me went on a 2-day tour to Kandy.
In this tour we've spent a night on Devon Hotel in Kandy.
It is a modest hotel. The rooms are big and were fairly clean, however a restyling would be much welcomed. Additionally the beds weren't the most comfortable ones.
Even though neither the hotel facilities nor the rooms were nothing special the restaurant was very good (dinner was great and the breakfast was also good and complete), the staff was very nice and the swimming pool was ok.
Globally for a 1-night stay the hotel is bearable... for more I wouldn't advice it.
