“A newbie- needs a better restaurant”
Reviewed 2 June 2011

The hotel is on a steep hill about 4 km from down. The view is simply awesome and the architecture adding to the beauty. We landed at this hotel after visiting Nuwara Eliya and was really happy with their environment. Soon things started turning the other way when we sat for lunch we had very little options.... The same "DEVILED" chicken, beef etc........Everything in Sri lanka has that chili flakes in it and they prefix it with "deviled"..... It can be annoying at times....There was a mini bar in the hotel which was filled but mistaking it to be complimentary, we opened the nuts packet and were charged 250 LKR for that....... They should inform all that b4 hand.. The 2 rooms which we had booked were on the same floor but had a world of difference among them...One was really big and spacious with a comfy bath. But the other was just the opposite...A little disappointment over there.... Overall the hotel has the capacity and if they put up a good restaurant , all will be well. The breakfast spread was good though with considerable variety... Do try the waffles with honey.........

We stayed at this hotel for one night when we were on a two day trip from The Blue Water Hotel. The Randholee is a quiet hotel within beautiful surroundings and stunning views - it was just what we needed after a 5.30am start from our resort hotel and a full day touring. The hotel was booked by Ruchi who organised our trip and accompanied us on it. We were very impressed with our room, the public areas, the friendly staff and the food. Whilst we were having dinner a trio of local singers entertained us with both Sri Lankan and western music. Yes it is a little out of Kandy and the road is very uneven and steep, but for us the drive to and from the hotel was all part of the holiday experience - having been to India the roads and driving in Sri Lanka are not so bad!!

Lovely new(ish) hotel set high above the hills overlooking kandy. Around 28 rooms currently but a further wing is being built. This hotel has been tastefully done out with high quality furnishings with a nice pool and restaurant.
Mr Rajapaksa, the general manager, keeps a close eye on his staff to enure they stay on their toes and his influence ensures high standards. Anything lacking by way of facilities or the odd slip up by staff is more than made up for by the charm with which one is greeted and treated.
I'm baffled why there isn't a better road up to the place. After all a couple of miles further along is the larger Amaya Hills hotel so it's not as if the road un-used. This infrastrucutre problem is quite common across Sri Lanka and let's down the investment made by hoteliers

I had booked Randholee resort over the phone after we reached Colombo and I picked the phone number from the tourism brochure I picked at the airport. Wasnt biased by any reviews. It was moderately priced (though they charge a very high exchange rate) and appeared fairly new on arrival. We transferred to Kandy after staying at Dumbulla and had heard a lot about the cultural heritage at Kandy. It was a long drive with young kids and by the time we reached the Hotel it was around 9 in the night. The hotel is placed on a high hill overlooking the quaint town Kandy. So the road to the hotel is full of turns and steep. Since we reached at night the sign boards also were a little difficult to locate.
The reception and lobby is well done. We were given a room on the second floor overlooking the city and it was a beautiful sight esp in the morning when the mist would clear. The room had a very artistic touch to it and was quiet spacious, with a balcony. The bathroom was also large equipped with a tub enclosed in glass. I found the porcelain mini urns for the toiletries very novel and cute. My kids had ample space to play in the room.
We stayed there for two days in total. The breakfast spread was adequate with Sri Lankan, Continental, Indian and English food served. The pool is also open air (not temp controlled though for a cold day) and is built to give the effect as if it merges into the skies (see snap). It was a very pleasant stay here. Only the drive up to the hotel is a bit time consuming.

Immaculately clean, light, spacious, modern hotel. A lovely, peaceful place to relax and unwind. The rooms have balconies with views across the hills. The downside is that it is 20 mins from Kandy up a steep pot-holed road and if you don't have transport taxis are quite expensive getting to and from the hotel. Also, you are totally reliant on the hotel for meals. The breakfast was not inspiring and the buffet dinner very expensive at $20 for a very average spread, really poor value.

Speaking about advantages first:
+ breathtaking view from the window. This view made our stay really worth it!
+ Christmas 2010 celebration was very sweet with carols singing and gifts giving. The Christmas menu was also nice.
+ the hotel interior and surrounding is okay
+ nice breakfasts
+ free Internet access

Disadvantages:
- the apartment didn't feel cozy.
- corner sandwiches we had for dinner were worst ever tried. Though the fresh mixed juice quite fine.
- untidy waiters.

We were due to make our over night stay at the Chayaa Citadel, but 4 weeks before our trip we were told we were staying at the "Redholee" hotel which we could not find on Trip Advisor for obvious reasons.

The location is stunning if you can get to the hoel, the access road from Kandy is steep, narrow and missing most of road surface in most places. It is a long way out of Kandy as others have noted and not somewhere you can just go elsewhere for a stroll before dinner.

Despite arriving and leaving our cases in our companions' room, on our return, we were informed that we were not on their list and had no room for us. Having now read through the reports, this seems to be a familiar complaint with regard to this hotel. Eventually, after much huffing, puffing and shuffling of paper, we were provided with a rear ground floor room looking at the buiilding site of the new extension and small car park. When we arrived there was a a large wedding in progress and I wonder if this was the reason for the less than fulsome welcome.

In fairness, the rooms at the rear of the hotel have a window onto the corridor, from which you can enjoy the views across Kandy, if you want to stand up or sit in the corridor. It was clean and roomy, and the bed was comfortable, but these are the only positives I can think of.

The evening meal was adequate without being unusual, but the breakfast was luke warm at best and quite unappetising. Our travelling companions ordered a bottle of wine with the evening meal, but no one could find a corkscrew as they were 'all in the rooms'. How do you work that one out?

The staff were freindly and tried hard, but everything seemed to be disjointed and this can only be the fault of the management.

The parking is limited and it is difficult to turn if you can get in. Internet access was free an did work very well.

We were glad to leave and move on to Nuwara Eliya.
