“"Luxury" is not a word I would use to describe this place.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2014

Other than the nice view and its secluded location, we found Randholee to be a major let down. There is very little that's "luxurious" about it. While the entrance and lobby area are quite nice, the rooms are not so great. It's clear that the building/rooms are rather old and have not been updated in quite some time. This is most striking in the bathroom, which is dark and dingy, and even had mold growing in the shower area. It just didn't feel clean. Another issue that led to a sort of seedy feeling throughout the hotel was their failure to replace/renew paper products that were clearly old/dirty/water damaged. For instance, the "do not disturb" and "please make up room" signs hanging on the door nob were dingy, warped, and not clean looking. The same goes for the in-room dining/spa menus and the menus down by the restaurant. I know this isn't a big deal, but it felt gross having to touch these things that were clearly well-worn and dirty- it also takes away from the "luxury" theme. Simply replacing these items on a regular basis would go a long way.

Additionally, the furniture on the porch had holes in it and the safe was a disaster. We followed the directions on the safe, but an alarm went off anyhow. I've never seen that before. Usually if you mess up on a safe's directions, it beeps at you and gives you an error message- this one blasts a repetitive alarm that can be heard throughout most of the hotel. We called the front desk 3 times for help in shutting it off. Eventually, it turned off on its own (maybe 7 minutes later)- the staff never came to help. We know we weren't the only people to have problems w/this, as we heard at least two other safes go off while we were eating dinner.

As others have said- the food is pretty forgettable. The best part about eating is getting an outside table near the pool. They don't seem to set these up regularly though, as there was no outdoor seating our 2nd day- which is too bad b/c the main eating room gets crowded, loud, and warm.

So- in the end, I'm giving this an "average" rating (rather than "poor") b/c of it's location. The views are stunning, the pool is nice, and being up and away from Kandy is relaxing. Otherwise, however, this is not a luxurious place, nor is it worth the cost. We definitely stayed at nicer, cleaner places than this for half of the cost.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a real double bed (ours had two twin beds, made up separately).

This lovely little hotel is home to a stunning view, and great service. The rooms were spacious and clean, and the staff were helpful. The only disadvantage to it being a small hotel was that there was never much of a choice with the buffets unless you ordered a la carte which obviously cost more - nevertheless, the food was enjoyable - especially the desserts!

Stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of FEB, rooms were clean and tidy and the views were superb (woke up one moring to find ourselves above the clouds). Pool was well maintained and the food was good compared to some of the other places we stayed during our trip. main meals from the menu were well priced at around 800 - 1200 rupees, we didn't bother with the buffet for dinner but it was fine for breakfast.

Staff were friendly and helped us organise a day trip to Sigiriya through a local tour company, the driver they supplied us with (Pradip) was one of the nicest people we met on our trip and definitely the safest driver!

Again, comparing to some other places we stayed the service was good (service in many other hotels/restaurants was non existent)

went there today for a swim. before going there we called the hotel and reserved the pool. but when we drove all the way to the hotel they didn't allow us to the pool saying there are guests. there were actually guests who had just arrived. thought it was very inconsiderate of them to not call us and tell us that the pool is taken. the staff was an absolute let down even though the view from the pool was amazing.

Far from the town but great views if you get the right facing. Rooms are pretty basic. l wont say that it is 4 star. Service was not fantastic and we did not get good explanations and service when apparently our travel agent did not get us the right room type. Breakfast was so so too and bland. We also had some strange noises in the middle of the night from the roof ~ sounded like monkey running on the roof. Weird. l will not go back again if not for the views.

This hotel was one of the hotels we stopped at on our 8 day tour around Sri Lanka for our honeymoon.

Positives: Our bedroom had the most amazing views and was nice and big and clean. Reception was clean and also had amazing views.

Negatives: The staff didn't seem to care about the customers, they were always on their phones and so every time you had a question you would have to wait a while for them to get off their phones. We had to ask 4 times to get another pillow sent up to the room.

There were only two pillows for a king size bed and no hair dryer to be seen.

Swimming pool had alsorts of things floating in it and even though it suggested a shower before you entered it didn't even work.

Walls of bedrooms were extremely thin and we had the joy of hearing a couple with there young kid at 5am each morning.

The food was terrible, whatever we had for breakfast seemed to end up for dinner also, eg chicken sausages at breakfast were then stir fried for dinner. Breakfast selection was poor and dirty plates were scattered all around the buffet area as even though there were plenty of staff around they never cleaned away the plates from the previous course.

Shower on last morning was freezing cold

I would certainly never class this as a 4 star hotel.

We visited Kandy for 3 days in January 2014, not knowing much about the place itself and the surrounding area - we did not really know where to stay. We decided on this hotel after hearing about the great views of the mountains. It is a bit of a journey to get to town, so if you are looking to explore Kandy itself, a hotel nearer might be best, it depends on what you are looking for. This hotel was perfect for a relaxing stay in the mountains, just 30 minutes outside (well above!) Kandy.

The first room we were allocated was on the 1st floor - the amazing view was obstructed by a tree which was really disappointing, also the bed was made up of two singles, not ideal. We asked if they had a room with a double bed available, and they promptly moved us to a room on the third floor (room 303) with an enormous king size bed and the most incredible view from the balcony. We were very happy!

We took a tuk tuk from the hotel to visit Kandy on one day - the hotel arranged this for us and it took about 30-40 minutes to get to the centre. An interesting ride down winding steep roads, brilliant experience. (Another great trip is to the tea museum - not factory, which can be reached by tuk tuk).

The menu in the restaurant has a good choice of meals, and lighter meals are also available, sandwiches and salads etc. Because of the location of this hotel, eating out in the evening is not really an option. On our first evening the service in the restaurant was a bit slow - it was very busy (there are approx. 12 tables and all were occupied) The staff seemed quite flustered. We had to ask for our drink order a couple of times, it eventually came after our food had arrived! Service did improve the following night, and the staff were always pleasant. Breakfast was brilliant with lots of choice.
Reception staff definitely need a mention - they were very friendly and helpful. We organised transport for day trips through them (by tuk tuk) and also a car to take us to the train station on our last morning as we had a 6am train. The journey to the train station took around 20 minutes.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view - 3rd floor is best. We had room 303 (Double) which was perfect.
