We were apprehensive about this property due to past reviews, but found it really good.
The views were amazing .. I mean really amazing, the house was marvellously appointed ( new kitchen) , and was like a breath of fresh air after the summer heat of Kandy town. It did have some drawbacks though ... Chandra , and her assistant actually also lived in an adjacent part of the same house, so at no time did you get the feeling that it was actually yours for the week.... they also shared the garden. Chandra was very helpful in nearly every aspect .. I say nearly, as she didn't understand English very well and kept saying she understood, when often what she understood was quite the opposite ! But her taxi rides down town etc were very reasonably priced. It is a fair way out of town, but there are always tuk-tuks within 50mtrs, so transport was not a problem.
HOWEVER, remember to take the Sinhalese interpretation of the house with you to get back again as no one understands "House on the Rock "!
We found Chandra's cooking pleasant, and plentiful .. but nothing more than that .
There were a few insects around .. but this was to be expected and were not a problem.
We stayed 10days, and cooked for ourselves for all but about 4 nights which was really handy.
The House advertises an internet connection but it was so bad that it was nearly unusable ( some days it was totally unusable) and more often than not we had to use an internet cafe downtown! There is also no telephone connection.
Also we never really learnt how to use the hot water system ...and I work as a maintenace man !
All in all, though, if you want to be self sufficient in Kandy I would definitley recommend it .. the views, especially the sunrises ove rthe mountains and the afternoon thunderstorms will stay with me for a lifetime.

Title: House On The Rock Kandy Sri Lanka

ID#: 10048251

September 2007.House on the Rock,Kandy. Beware pretty pictures on web

sites. We were seeking privacy , silence, views and nature and

informed the owner of this upon booking. On arrival builders working

on extension, landscapers had reduced grounds to mud lake, builders

rubble, roof tiles ,pipes everywhere. Massive arguments involving

calling owner in UK. Workmen told to go. House filthy, smell of death

and toxic fumes filled all rooms. Owner's mother had removed most

bulbs to save electricity, warned us not to use tumble drier.Roof

leaking, 2 grubby holed and threadbare grey towels, no starter pack

and bedsheets smelt unwashed. Next morning no water upstairs bathroom,

no hot water anywhere. Owner's mother had removed switch for hot water

heater. She was under final notice of disconnection of electricity.

Flood in one bedroom. Smell was dead and dying rats behind

non-functioning washer in kitchen. Took 3 hours to clear and

disinfect. Dead rats all over property. Builders and landscapers kept

returning. More arguments. We had to take key from builder and

padlock side gate. Owner's mother called police, we called owner,

police left. An extremely distressing, nightmare experience. House

not fit to rent because of builder damage , general neglect and

electricity problem. Will provide photos for any potential renter.

Other Sri lankans friendly likeable and Kandy cool and beautiful.

We have only recently seen this review but, although the comments relate to a booking back in 2007, we thought it would be helpful to respond.
Unfortunately, a couple of weeks before these clients were due to stay at the House on the Rock, a fire destroyed most of the caretaker's house, adjacent to our property, rendering her homeless. We informed these clients of this dreadful incident before their arrival and offered them a full refund. This was refused. We therefore pledged that no construction work would take place during their stay, although workmen would be on site to take measurements, plan etc. On arrival, the clients indicated they were not happy and did not wish to have any people working next door. We again offered the money back and offered to find an alternative place for them to stay, but they refused. During the course of their stay, they were in regular contact with us to complain (for example, our plants were in the wrong place so they uprooted them), on each occasion we offered them a refund and actually asked them to leave as they were so clearly unhappy. They refused. They also refused to return the caretakers house keys to allow her access to her own house. At this point, we called the police and the clients eventually returned the caretaker's house keys to her.
Despite this dreadful review, readers may wish to note that these clients stayed the full two weeks in our house, despite the repeated offers of refunds and assistance to find alternative accommodation. They also refused to leave our house when we asked them to. It was unfortunate that there was a fire and the stay wasn't pleasant, however we did offer other options and did our very best to better their stay even after they refuse our offers.
