We spent a day and a night at Jungle Tide in February 2014. We immediately felt at home and welcome. the place is very peaceful and relaxing, ideal if you need a few quiet days. Food was absolutely superb, both dinner and breakfast. Definitely a must-do if you are travelling around Kandy and if you don't mind a rocky drive to get there.

It's about a 30 to 40 minute trip straight up the hill and through the tea plantation in Kandy. Suddenly you arrive at Junge Tide - a lovely house with a beautiful view over the tea plantation. It's quiet and peaceful - be careful of the sun which doesn't seem so hot this high but believe me it is! Martin and Rani are the two Sri Lankan cooks/hosts who look after you and they are very welcoming. Rani's food is out of this world and her curries are carefully tailored to a UK palate.
We just wanted to chill for our week there but took two trips out, one to the golf club about an hour and a half away which was stunning. The other was to the Temple of the Tooth and to the Botanical Gardens, both not to be missed. Try going to the Queens's Hotel for lunch and a swim if you fancy it, it is just by the Temple of the Tooth.
I thoroughly recommend Jungle Tide to anyone wanting a nice relaxing time but if you are looking for 'action' this is not the place although of course you can go out and about every day.

Room Tip: All the rooms are fantastic.

We had a good stay at this place as we were the only guests for 3 nights. Rani can cook really well and the dishes she's serving vary every night, so no opportunity to get bored with it. Martin is a real humble person and makes you feel welcome as well. As he wasn't around that much we unfortunately didn't have the opportunity to ask how to get the warm shower working as well as the wi-fi. Rani had no knowledge of these things. Help of the owners would've been appreciated, would they've been around.
The place is really peaceful though as it is 15 mins uphill from Kandy, with the last 3 kms a rocky and bumpy road.

Thank you for the review. We are glad you enjoyed so much about Jungle Tide and sorry that not everything worked for you, but grateful for the feedback which helps us to improve things. We apologise re the wi-fi. This is a problem we have only heard about in the last two days and are sorting out urgently. We also apologise for the lack of hot water and we are investigating why this happened - the showers do take a long time to get hot but usually it is fine if you wait a few minutes. We will also remind Martin that he should be at the house whenever possible when guests are present.. Unfortunately, we do not live in the house yet as we still have to work in the UK to earn the money to keep improving the business! Our plan is to retire permanently to Jungle Tide in 2015 and then we will be able to be around to make sure such problems are no longer occurring.
Regards from Jerry and Sally.

We stayed at Jungle Tide for three nights. The embrace we felt from the staff at Jungle Tide was as if we were old family friends. It was such a peaceful quiet location. Ideal for our 4 month old, 2 year old and two very tired parents. We felt we could get in touch with the real Sri Lanka here. Rani and her sister cooked the best food we had in all of Sri Lanka - the vegetarian dishes in particular were beautiful, they helped with the washing and played with the children too.

Martin offered to take us on a walk. We put the kids in front and back packs and off we went, it was a huge highlight for us. We winded up through the tea plantations and we got to meet and greet some tea pickers (they adored the kids), we got amazing views and walked back through the nearby village.

The only complaints we had were that we had power outages on all the nights we were there (3), as expats from Bangladesh we are used to this sort of thing so it didn't bother us as much as it may bother others. Martin had the electrician out and was very proactive in finding a resolution. Also the pool was out of order, Rani was quick to find a big wash tub for our two year old to play in though and he had hours of entertainment on the lawn with this. As everyone else comments, the road is tough going. perhaps factor in a day where you stay in the vicinity of jungle tide to give yourself a break from the road! Having said this, brave the road and you reap the results!

The wild life is lovely, monkeys and birds frequent the area. Jerry (one of the owners) has left his journal there for guests to read - I totally recommend this, very interesting reading... from rescuing lost family jewels from a bank vault in Colombo to how they came about purchasing such a unique property.

We loved it, we will recommend it to our nearest and dearest and we hope to one day be back.

Room Tip: All rooms have the same view - garden, trees, green hills. All rooms open on to the same large balco...

First, thank you so much for this lovely review. We are delighted you enjoyed Jungle Tide and we can only apologise for the power outages and the lack of a swimming pool. In fact the two are connected. The issue has only just been brought to our attention (we are in the UK) and is due to the requirements of the pool putting too much of a strain on the electricity supply to the house. We are having an extra power line installed urgently which should solve both problems! We do have a generator so we hope that Martin used this when the power failed?
We have had a succession of problems with our swimming pool but hopefully this is the last one and future guests will all have the enjoyment of it. Our apologies once again and we hope you make a return visit to Jungle tide one day.

OK we agree and as noted in other reviews, the road to Jungle Tide is a challenge. However if you are seeking a tranquil location within a tea estate close to Kandy, then the road is also a very useful gatekeeper by limiting access. The property is located in a well elevated position with sweeping views to the north and is surrounded by forest and tea plantation.
The house itself is large and well-appointed with high ceilings and a sense of airy spaciousness in a plantation style family home. This is particularly so when sitting on the veranda, taking in the view, hearing nothing other than the birds and the wind.
Guest rooms (3 or 4) are generously proportioned and comfortably appointed with ensuites and all have large windows and glass doors to capture the northern views. There is a large lounge and dining area that leads to the kitchen that can be either used for self-catering or just as a spill-over area.
Hospitality is provided by the delightful Martin and Rani. They are extremely attentive and provide everything from housekeeping to advice on local walks. The complimentary laundry service is a lovely touch. Jerry and Sally provided seamless booking and pre-travel info on Jungle Tide before our arrival. Jerry’s Sri Lankan travel journal is a great read.
Rani is, to put it simply, a great cook. She lays out great spreads of local cuisine. A “light lunch” can be a nice choice as well – we had a chicken noodle soup one day that was fantastic. To counter Rani’s influence on your waistline, there are plenty of local walks through the local plantations and everywhere there is a great view and a smiling local.
Trip from Kandy town centre is around 40 minutes although it can be argued that the scariest bits of the drive are actually navigating an exit from Kandy behind the local bus.
We rented the whole house for 6 nights over Xmas and had a very nice Xmas lunch at the neighbouring Royal Hotel.

Room Tip: All just fine

We stayed at Jungle Tide for five nights at the beginning of our trip to Sri Lanka with our seven year old and eleven month old. It was the perfect place to relax, get over the jetlag and then use as a base for exploring sights around Kandy: the elephant orphanage, the botanical gardens etc. As many others have commented, Martin and Rani are fantastic. Rani's cooking is truly spectacular, and both our children tucked in with great gusto to her Sri Lankan dishes (this was not true for most of the holiday!) This is a testament to Rani's skill at making her food accessible to fussy eaters, but still authentically Sri Lankan (and also loved by adult foodies!) Martin and Rani were great at helping our driver to plan activities for us. It was also very useful for us to have access to the kitchen: fridge, microwave, kettle etc to store and prepare food and bottles for the baby.

There is a hotel with a nice bar next door for a cold beer after a walk in the tea plantations, or you can buy them in Kandy yourself and enjoy a cold one on the beautiful veranda at Jungle Tide itself. Overall we had such a special time at Jungle Tide, and would massively recommend it to anyone. Sally and Jerry were also brilliant at helping to plan the trip (for months in advance, it was quite a military operation with small children!) The driver they recommended was fantastic etc.

About the road too, on our last day they were starting work on this so it may well be much improved soon (not that we found it to be a problem, it is bumpy but it's fine, our daughter called it the rollercoaster road and quite enjoyed the ride!)

Room Tip: All the rooms we saw were really nice

We stayed here for a week in the middle of our 3 week stay in Sri Lanka, the plan was a base near Kandy to visit the Cultural sights. Jungletide absolutely turned out to be the perfect spot, a peaceful haven for our busy week. We managed to visit loads of interesting sights, a car and driver for us was essential as the house is quite remote and the access road is a steep 40 minute drive out of Kandy but our driver managed fine and the journey was part of the fun! We were a party of 6 so booked the house for our sole use. JT has lovely rooms, comfortable beds and a very sociable living area with a superb verandah for our 'sundowners'! We were made very welcome by Martin & Rani, the cheerful housekeepers to whom nothing was too much trouble. We ate there the first night and the home cooked food was so delicious, we decided to eat in every night! Martin & Rani looked after our driver well too, which helped make our stay even more relaxing. The owners Sally & Jerry, helped us with the planning of our trip before and after our stay at JT, which was much appreciated. We would definitely recommend Jungletide for a stay and will be back ourselves for another visit!
