Stayed here for five nights with my wife and a five-year-old and I can't praise this place highly enough. The staff were great, the food was lovely and the surroundings were awe-inspiring. It's certainly not luxury accommodation but if you want to experience nature and living in the middle of a jungle then this is the place. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, the trips they ran were well-organised and fairly-priced, and we were genuinely sad to have to leave.

Room Tip: Take the full-board option as there is nowhere close where you can eat. The food here is very good anyway.

Family of four stayed here for a week, February 2014 - our first trip to Sri Lanka. Our experience was amazing in all respects. There are two highlights - the location and the staff.

They arranged a smooth pick-up from the airport and provided a warm welcome.

We stayed in the Brick House. It was basic but as advertised! The beds were very big. A chest of drawers would have been handy. The experience of ordering a fire to have a hot shower was great - we loved this. Very child friendly.

The staff at Polwathatha were faultless (thanks especially to Sanjeewa). The food was authentic and delicious - Sri Lankan curries and accompaniments. Given the quality of the food, the full board rate is a bargain.

A main reason for visiting is the location - remote and perched on the side of a valley. Immersed in the jungle. Due to this, and the endemic species that are here, this is paradise for birders.

If you like nature don`t hesitate to come - a minimum of four nights I'd say.

Thank you for making our stay so special.

Nigel and family

Room Tip: All lodges are great - they have a different character.

Quirky place with great vibe. Fun isolated tree and mud houses in jungle setting. Great birdlife and giant squirrels overhead. A range of walks nearby and potential excursions. Great staff, service and food - I had an impromptu curry lesson over a mud stove. Fun. Bring leech socks.

Visited here during December 2013. Rooms were not very comfortable, basic but basic can be comfortable and this was not what I'd classify as that. The quilts were thoughtful however and proved to be handy during the cool nights. Not as isolated a resort as I expected it to be. Food was average, could have been better. It was too "community oriented" for my personal liking. The atmosphere as I read it was that you get introduced to other people visiting there and therefore there is a need to 'socialize', chit chat with other guests while the servers and chef hangs about your table and chat to you while you are trying to have a conversation with your own party instead over your meal! This was just a lack of privacy I felt and beyond saying hello to other guests, I didn't feel comfortable having to converse with strangers but it would have been odd without this aspect because of the way things were over here. And people standing in a row near the table to chat with you over the meal was not something that's certainly my cup of tea when I am on vacation. Felt there was no personal space unless you are to be away from this crowd which either left you with your room or the outside which had leeches. Owners were nice and so were the staff, friendly, helpful and the hot water system they had here (wood fired) was one invention that was pretty cool :-) Lots of birds visited the site and that was a highlight. There were however leeches and I had to watch out constantly when outside. I would not visit again. Did not really enjoy my experience here.

Dear Amali,

Thank you for your review of Polwaththa Eco Lodges. We appreciate your feedback which gives us food for thought. I am sorry to hear that your stay was not up to your expectations and apologize for infringing on your privacy in trying to promote community involvement (our staff is selected from the village and encouraged to give a personalized service to our guests). The comfort levels are being upgraded with better mattresses and easy-chairs while wiring within the rooms will soon be re-set in a neater manner with a few more plug points and switches.

Unfortunately, there is little we can do against leeches (present only in the wet period) since we are located in a jungle free of pesticides and other chemicals. However, we have now made "leech-socks" given free of charge to our guests and have effective remedies against leech bites which were in place during your stay with us.

Since you are from Sri Lanka, we hope that you could find the time to visit us again in the near future when it is drier and warmer (and without leeches) than when you were here last December. We are certain that next time around, you will leave us as a satisfied customer.

Kind Regards,
Nihal Ellegala

It was really beautyful to have an oppotunity to live in the middle of forest in awesome house and toilet! And the warming up water by wood was like putting the clocs back! And also it was amazing opportunity to plant a tree and spend one of the nights with civit :D Amazing food and trip to village through the forest and hills and swimming in the river! Wish You best!
