A beautifully kept war cemetery. Some interesting graves. Well worth a half hour wander and the warden is happy to point out places of interest.

“Not just another cemetary”

currently under renovation a wonderful reminder of the history of Kandy and the pioneers who lost their lives. The caretaker gave us a pamphlet with layout and details of who was buried where and short stories relating to them.

“A resting place for Old Ceylon. ”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2014 via mobile

At 32 years old, I've perhaps never felt more thankful for both my age and my health than I did when visiting Kandy Garrison Cemetery. The vast majority of those buried here - British men, women and children from the early and mid 1800s - rarely made it past 35. Ceylon, Sri Lanka's colonial name, was harsh on its colonizers. Malaria, cholera, and most amusing for me, an elephant who reminded a particularly brazen young man of the folly in going hunting without a rifle - all contributed to helping the residents of this place arrive at their final resting place.
Charles Carmichael, the caretaker, is a treasure in and of himself. An older Sri Lankan man with bare feet, flighty eyes and the Queen's English nimble on his tongue, he led me through the place telling the stories of its people. I liked the one about a rising star in the British armed forces, a young officer who made a bet with a friend that he could walk from the coast to Kandy. He did, but in the process came down with an illness, likely malaria, and upon winning his bet, promptly died at age 26. I like to think he gave up the ghost with a healthy dose of humor at himself. Some of the dead's stories cannot be told - their tombstones (brought in from England) are wiped clean and no records exist. Charles Carmichael, like the rest of us, can only guess at what happened to them, and indeed, who they were to begin with.

The cemetery is small, easily explored within a half hour, but lingering to read the tombstones is encouraged. There's a certain appreciation that comes of being alive when you take your time with the dead.

Leave a donation as you exit, there's a box by the gate. The money keeps the graveyard open and in good repair. When I visited, they were building a new fence around it to keep out the boars that come digging at the graves, looking for worms.

If you're into cemeteries and history, this is pretty cool. It has very unique was that the people passed on their tombstone. The caretake will give you a free tour. He is a really nice and enthusiastic young man.
