Our weekend with Emil and Arlene was definitely one of the highlights of our trip (in August 2012) They both made us extremely welcome in their charming home and sitting with them, relaxing over a drink on their veranda at sundown was a wonderful way to gain a real insight into Sri Lanka. (We even managed to get to see an international cricket match in Kandy while we were there!) From the beginning we were treated like friends and enjoyed warm hospitality and excellent cooking! We look forward to going back one day!

Our family visited Arlene and Emil 28 Dec 2013 - 1 Jan 2014. For me, my wife and my three daughters (14, 17 and 20) this became something we will cherish in our hearts for the rest of our lives.
When we stepped out of the taxi on the 28th we immediately felt welcome and this feeling just grew. When leaving, it was more like we had visited good friends than been paying guests.
This is of course very much about who Arlene and Emil are; generous, caring and easy-going.

Halgolla Plantation Home (HPH) is a beautiful place to stay; the surroundings including Arlenes garden are breath-taking. This together with the mansion house makes you feel transported to another time. The inside is inspiring and the rooms are spacious and comfortable with modern bathrooms.

We choose to have breakfast and dinner at HPH and lunch one day when we did an excursion led by Emil. The food is traditional Lankeese and very tasty; thank you Arlene and staff - You gave us a delicious insight into the Lankeese cuisine - really appreciated.

Don't miss the excursion on HPH - Emil is a living encyclopaedia of everything that is growing together with the history of HPH and Sri Lanka as well.

The only concern you could have is the transport from the main road to the estate of maybe 1km.
It requires that you have some guts the first time, then it becomes more fascinating and at the end something to laugh about.

For anyone that wants to experience something out of the ordinary and would like to get the feeling of what a traditional plantation is like, HPH is something we warmly recommend.

Room Tip: The standard is of course not as for a five-star hotel, but quite above at least our expectations...

A very belated response to your kind words!
It was truly a pleasure to have all of you and, particularly, to share New Year's eve with all of you in traditional Sri Lankan garb of sarong and saree!
We hope that we'll have the pleasure of your company again before too many years roll by!

Encouraged by the excellent reviews on trip advisor, we started our holiday at Halgolla Plantation Home after a brief overnight stay in Negombo.
Arlene and Emil were wonderful hosts. THe plantation is a home rather than a hotel and we felt like guests in a home. We had a large room with two beds, the Nellie suite. THere were breathtaking views from the windows of the surrounding hills. We had mosquito nets but did not need them. We had fans but preferred to leave the windows open and make the most of the cross ventilation. One of the mattresses was very firm, but John slept soundly on it and I opted for the softer bed!
Emil took us on walks through the plantation and explained how nutmeg, vanilla, durian, jam trees, rubber trees and treacle trees are harvested. THe plantation has been in his family for generations and I found it fascinating to hear stories of his early life in Sri Lanka. Having a beer on the balcony and sharing meals with Emil and Arlene gave us an insight into the current culture, politics and economics of Sri Lanka today.
Arlene makes use of all the produce from the plantation and kitchen garden to cook up a storm for guests. WIth the assistance of Malika and Padma and the other estate workers each meal eaten at the plantation is a gastronomic delight. New to Sri Lankan cuisine , John and I devoured roast boar, home made mustard, curried juvenile Jak fruit (my favourite) coconut sambal, curd and treacle( my sweet favourite), fish curry, mango chutney, nutmeg jam and many other dishes.
We used our time at the plantation to chill out, to recover from our flight and mad rush to get ready for our holiday, to acclimatize to the humidity and as a base for exploring Kandy. We went off for two nights to Sigiriya (wonderful devote a whole day) and Polowanarru (bloody hot and dusty, could have lived without). We then returned overnight to the plantation before catching a train to Ella. We spent four nights at the plantation.
Reasons to visit the plantation: a glimpse of real life in Sri Lanka with hosts who seem to really enjoy their visitors. John and I would like to thank Emil and Arlene for a wonderful experience and for checking we were okay through out our trip. We hope to return to visit again. It takes courage to welcome strangers into your home and we felt welcomed into your hearts. many thanks Mandy and John
Getting to the plantation: Arlene and Emil organized our pick up from Negombo in a van driven by Nashaud who is a local. Nashaud is an excellent driver but it was a long bumpy trip in an older van and next time we would catch the train to Kandy and be picked up from there. Nashuad knows the way to the plantation and is used to the rough drive up the final country road which needs a van or a tuk tuk,. Nashaud once he discovered my obsession with seat belts arranged a car for the next three days which was very comfortable. We rode up and down the rough road in a tuktuk which was part of the adventure, then transferred into a car.

Emil and Arlene are the prefect hosts at their historical plantation house some 30 mins north of Kandy which is peaceful and quite, surrounded by nature and located on a hill top estate, with no neighbours. Its a unique experience living in a Sri Lankan home with the family who are such kind and knowledgeable people. Emil is only to happy to share his experience and knowledge and Arlene is a food, art and cricket expert, with a talent for making bedspreads and fantastic jams from the fruit and spice trees growing on the estate. This is a real and unforgettable insight into a Sri Lankan Plantation, Sri Lankan culture and was a highlight of my trip. They can also arrange local excursions although I was very happy just being there. The house is amazing. Highly recommended. I will be going back.

Room Tip: This is such a unique chance. Contact Emil or Arlene directly and discuss what you want with them...

We are glad that, yet again, we appear to have succeeded in doing what we aim to do: make a stay at HPH a really positive, different and memorable experience, providing cuisine of the highest quality, and conversations and experiences of value that highlight the essence of the best of Sri Lanka. We hope that all of our satisfied guests "spread the word" because we depend on satisfied guests to advertise what HPH has to offer.

Just back from Sri Lanka, we agree it was great luck that our last stay, for 5 nights, was best -- at Halgolla Plantation Home in northern hill country. High fives to hosts extraordinaire, Emil and Arlene!
With its family heirlooms and vibrant Indian bedspreads, our room was full of comfort and character. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were a splendid array of Sri Lankan home cooking, richly flavored curries, sambals, and chutneys served up with rice, dhals, and conversation. We were often invited into the daily life of the plantation: a harvest of cloves, mangosteens, or little guavas; coconut being grated; hoppers or rotis browning in the fireplace.
Lots to do! We'd follow a path through the boulders or the rubber trees or the giant bamboo, winding up in the cooling soaking pool. Or, with the adept driver helpfully sorted out by our hosts, we could watch the playful antics of the elephants in the river; or the massive white Buddha looming from the forest canopy below Sigiriya; or the monkeys sporting in the ancient monks' cells at Polonnoruwa.
Sipping our Shandys at day's end, we'd sit on the porch as the sun set to a chorus of crickets and bird calls, chatting about anything and everything with Emil and Arlene, most generous hosts offering the rarest of gifts: time, attention, and stories. Cheryl and Linda Sitka, Alaska

Room Tip: All rooms were comfortable and characterful.

We (me, wife and 8 year old daughter) spent two nights as guests of Emil and Arlene in late December 2012. They are charming and attentive hosts, sharing with us not only good home-prepared Sri Lankan food, but also a multitude of anecdotes and insights relating to life in Sri Lanka. Our time with Emil and Arlene was certainly one of the highlights of our visit.

Emil was also extremely helpful in arranging a car and driver to collect us from Colombo (we spent 3 days at Lake Lodge in Colombo, also recommended, and then 5 days at Chayaa Blu in Trincomalee, which is not bad) and then to take us to and from Trincomalee.

Halgolla is in a remote location so visitors should not expect to just pop into Kandy for a quick look see. However it's very easy to arrange, though Emil, for a car and driver to pick you up and chauffeur you around for the day (truth be told I didn't find Kandy that interesting) before returning to the tranquility of Halgolla.

Thank you for your kind words and we are gratified that you enjoyed your stay with us but we must correct one thing – the credit for transportation must go to Arlene – she is the one that does all the work arranging it!

It wasn't the comfortable accommodation, the attentive staff, the mouthwatering food. It wasn't the beautiful location perched on a hill amidst the varied and ineteresting fauna and flora. It wasn't the peace and tranquility nor the ability to visit Kandy and must see other tourist attractions that made our Sri Lankan trip. No. My wife and three adult children were captivated by the generosity and attentiveness of our hosts Arlene and Emil. We don't believe a trip to Sri Lanka would not be complete without a stay here. It's the best.
