We walked up to the temple from the bus station. It is really not that far or that steep (as some of the reviews here say) and very well sign posted. It was so hot and pretty sweaty so take water! Probably took us about 20 minutes. The man by the shoe place was quite insistent trying to sell us lotus flowers etc that we didn't want to buy.

The temple itself costs about 200 rupees and is not that exciting. It was very empty and there were a fews murals inside the Buddha but nothing that exciting. However from the main area at the foot of the Buddha you can see really nice views over Kandy and the lake. Although our guide book thought the views were better from the other side of the lake we really liked being able to see the train station, cricket stadium etc as well as the lake.

You can climb up the Buddha statue although the very top was locked. This also had pretty views to the hills behind Kandy.

I would say this is something to do if you have a bit of time in Kandy/ want somewhere to walk with nice views but not otherwise.

A lovely attraction in Kandy and a must see if you are there. An amazing white large buddha statue in the location is the main attraction of the place. Situated in a somewhat hilly location in Kandy with a Buddhist Monastery.

Recently I visited Bahirawakanda Temple for a television recording. I had seen this mountain from many far away places in Kandy town but never had the opportunity to go and see the place. Well if you have some free time it is worth while to make a visit to this location too while in Kandy. The mountain has many tales to tell from the past but none them is proven by archaeology or facts. But folk lore is also a part of any the culture of any country. The name Bhahirawa means the demon believed to be protecting land. The mountain has also been a place to carry out executions or punish people in the time of the Kings. But fortunately today it is a place of worship with a gigantic Buddha statue which is about 88 feet in height. The uncommon feature is there is a stairway from the back side of the statue to visitors to climb up to the shoulder level.

Enormous statue of Buddha overlooking Kandy. Excellent views from the top. There is a small charge to get in and then you will be asked to make a donation when in. Shoes off and left at the entrance. Well worth a visit.
