We had two nights in Kandy and chose the Drop Inn. It’s not expensive and adequate for a short stay. The staff were helpful, especially the owner who knew a lot about the area and onward travel. The room was ok; the bathroom though could have done with a good clean. Breakfast was ok too. It’s a little way out of town so either a short tuk-tuk ride or a long-ish walk back up the hill. It's close to the Royal palace and near the lake which was nicely lit up at night. Like I say, certainly not the worst place.

The guesthouse as simple clean rooms with en suite bathrooms with steaming hot water (something that is a luxury in Sri Lanka).
Our room was spacious with a private balcony on whic breakfast was served. The owner, Herbert, is very knowledgeable about the area and places to visit. He gladly informs guests of what is worth visiting and what not without making a menace of himself.
Herbert also provides daytrips. Prices are very reasonable.

The guesthouse has some of the best views of Kandy lake and mountains.
Some practical issues to consider:
1. The guesthouse is opposite a primary school. The children can be noisy from very early in the morning. Plan your stay over weekends or school holidays.
2.The walk to the guest house is very steep uphill. Be prepared to be exhausted by the time you reach the top or hire a threewheeler. I preferred to walk-it was good exercise.

The bathroom could do with a lick of paint. However, the steaming hot water makes up for poorly painted walls.

Room Tip: Room one has a balcony with views of Kandy Lake. On a clear day you can see the huge Buddha on the h...

We stayed in the room next to the (common) balcony (which could be noisy if other guests use it but it was not our case): decent size, clean and bright. Ensuite bathroom is simple and has hot water.
Staff is friendly and owner was kind to provide us with all the info we need for our sightseeing.
Guesthouse is located uphill but not so inconvenient to reach the city center by foot during the day (15 mins or so) but at night you have to hire a tuktuk (staff will arrange for you with preferred fixed rate).
Quiet neighborhood. There is a school next door though but you do not plan to wake up late, do you?!

Hotel in a good location, close to the lake and Buddha Tooth Relic. We were the only 2 guests at the hotel and had the room off the lounge area, it was plenty big enough- only criticism is that it (and the bathroom) need a really good clean and I think if it had a lick of paint it would be amazing! Herbert and all of the staff were very helpful, the breakfast was really good and the service was excellent. Hotel does have a menu but we didn't realise, otherwise we would have eaten there (rather than get soaked in the rain!!!). Also had some laundry done but they gave it back to us wet- we just packed the bag and didn't realise until we had got to our next hostel! Shani the dog is also very cute but very shy! But we enjoyed watching her running about! There is a school nearby and if you like to sing-a-long at 7am then this is the hotel for you! (On a serious note though we only got woken up once and they sounded quite cute!!)

It had everything we needed, a nice shower, very comfortable bed and a lovely communal balcony (where we ate our breakfasts) looking over the towards the lake. It is in a great location and is a nice short walk to the lake and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
The owner (Herbert) organised our airport transfer and he took us on our onward journey to Nuwara Eliya with some stops at a tea plantation, tea factory and also view points to see some of the waterfalls.
When Herbert was around he was very useful and informative, however there was one day when we couldn't get hold of him and we felt a little bit lost!

The room was simple and functional. The view was great! You can see all over the lake and Kandy. Even the Buddha statue is visible in some distance. The breakfast was lovely served an good as well. The owner of the hostel and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We spent a great time there. We recommend this nice hostel to the people who like to have a clean, simple room with a really familiar atmosphere. Nice Nice Nice!

We stayed 2 here nights here and we were happy with the room. The staff are very friendly, ask about playing the game karram, its harder than it looks. Breakfast was included and consisted of fruit, eggs, coffee, toast and jam. Simple yet reasonable good. The views are ok. The only criticism we have of the place is the noisy school next to it, the children start at 7, and the Internet wasn't the greatest, but it is close to town, easy 10 min walk and is good value for money.
