We stayed here for 3 nights (april 10-13) during our trip to Kandy. The Royal Bar has an awesome location, right in the heart of Kandy, about a 2 block walk to the Temple of the Tooth and Kandy Lake. When I was not allowed into the Temple of the Tooth because of my dress (above knees), I ran back, changed and return with pants on. Moments like that -- we were very grateful to be staying at the Royal Bar and Hotel, right next to Kandy's main attractions.
We were advised to stay here by our good friends who had come before us, their advice reading, "the place we didn't stay but wish we had". The hotel is set in a building which is over 120 years old, and is an old Governor's house in Kandy. Lots of colonial memorabilia and a lovely courtyard which is transformed at night into a beautiful space with drinking, dinner and music. They have themed nights and we were there for "tandoori night" which was awesome. All the food we tried was excellent (for dinner- I had the lovely thai curry) and their breakfast (which was included) was indulgent (fresh fruit, cappucino, juice, omelets, bread basket) and not the usual buffet fare that you get at the jetwings or cinammon hotels. It's also got a full bar downstairs which was awesome after a day of sightseeing. We ate all our dinners here (although they were not included in our rate) as we were hard pressed to find a more festive place in Kandy. The rooms are special- and done well. Clean white sheets, fun colonial decorations, wifi in house. The rain shower was a bit glitchy but I believe this is because the hotel water tanks in the hotel run out quickly on "rain shower mode". No TV but we didn't mind as there was plenty of entertainment in the courtyard. Overall, a lovely place to stay. There are monkeys on the roof by the way-- but it didn't bother me much and certainly didn't bother my fiance who slept wonderfully.

Room Tip: all rooms are beautiful. All will also have monkeys on the roof (but surprise, you're staying in...

Had a penne arrabiata. Was promised the pasta is freshly made, but can obviously see it is not. My partner took the market fish dish - very mediocre taste of the fish, potato was not soft so could not eat. Service is good and ambiance is nice (although we were the only ones having lunch there). Bottom line - not recommended.

Firstly, I need to point out that we didn't stay in this hotel. We did, however, make excellent use of their bar. Kandy is a very religious city, and as such a fairly dry city.

This hotel is very close to the temple of the tooth, and provides much needed escape from the hustle and bustle of Kandy street life. The bar and restaurant are in a little courtyard with a mezzanine level, and you'd be forgiven for thinking you had travelled back to colonial era Ceylon. It's all very calm inside, and I'd imagine very nice to stay in.

They also serve delicious local wine at a very reasonable price.

I have stayed in the Royal Bar and Hotel a couple of times now and its certainly different than what you would expect to find in Sri Lanka. I’m not sure about value for money as I get decent residents rate but I think the full international visitor rate would be high and therefore maybe not offer decent value. That said the place is efficient, well decorated, has draught beer, decent food (probably the most expensive in Kandy), decent wine list, great breakfast, proper coffee, well provisioned and tastefully decorated old colonial style rooms, some with a good old fashioned bathtub.
The ground floor open courtyard in popular with the locals in the evening sampling the draught beer, it’s a good place to escape the hustle & bustle of the Kandy street scene right outside the front door. It deserves to do well and get more attention from foreign tourists, especially ex-pat brits like myself that take pleasure in seeing some of our old colonial architecture and history brought to life. Even the paint scheme of the woodwork reminds me of old British Rail burgundy red. Try it and see for yourselves.

The Royal Bar and Hotel is small and has been nicely refurbished with a lot of taste for colonial style decoration. Check-in lasted 30 min because staff did not real connect well to agent Agoda.com. Our initial room was so small that we decided to upgrade our room to a small suite. Nice dark wooden floors and some colonial antiques made it into a nice room. The bed was only 1,6m wide and in tune with the rest of the hotel: it is all a bit smaller here. The bar in the courtyard was nice and a great hideaway from the noisy street although the street is just 10m away. There were no facilities except bar and a small restaurant. I should mention that I heard a lot of tip toe tip toe tip toe after I switched the light off at night. I suspect there must be rats or other rodents living in the ceiling. Kept me awake for a while. For what the hotel and room really are it is completely overpriced. Would not return

We made a last minute decision to stay at the Royal Hotel
First night we stayed in room 9, which was a bit small and lacking in natural light but it was comfortable enough. For the second and third night we stayed in room 10 which was better

The service at the hotel was excellent and attentive; the Hotel Manager was always at hand and he run a great little team

This is also a bar, so please don't expect to get an early quiet night but by 11pm the bar is closed and the place falls still.

The bar itself is excellent, with great bar snacks and a lively atmosphere (a big shout out to the waiters in the bar who work hard and fast !)

The location of the Royal Hotel is so good for Temple visits and also for Kandy bus and train station.

This small hotel is an excellent alternative to lakeside hotel and you don't have the polluted road traffic of the lake road

Room Tip: Room 10 (first floor, centre room)

This place is great! A recommendation from our accommodation led us here one afternoon in Kandy.

**IMPORTANT!!** We arrived at 5 past 2pm and unfortunately we were out of luck when it came to enjoying an afternoon beer. Between 2 and 5 there is no alcohol served so make like a local and order a few before 2!

That said we enjoyed some awesome food (spicy boneless chicken is excellent!!) and service. After a wander around Kandy in the afternoon we ended up back here at 5 on the dot. We enjoyed a couple of icy cold beers (hard to come by in Sri Lanka!) and the best devilled cashews!

All in all, a lovely little hang out in Kandy where there are more locals than tourists. The beautiful restored colonial building just adds to the experience.

Check out the black and white photos dotted around to get a feel for Sri Lanka back in the day.

P.S. There's a bar downstairs (where we hung out) and a restaurant upstairs. Not sure what the restaurant was like.
