right next to the temple of the tooth is the national meuseum of kandy. Enjoyed a guided tour with the last kings possessions mostly on display along with the rich history of kandy city.

We visited Kandy national museum and thoroughly enjoyed talking to the workers there and learning more about the history of the region. We love looking at historic items and were pleased that many descriptions were in English. Well worth a visit, only take about 1 hour to walk round if you take your time.

We intended to visit on a Sunday.
We went twice before midday and the gates were chained & locked.
This is odd because Sunday the town is packed with foreign & local tourists.

This museum is hard work: display is poor, information negligible and sequencing illogical to us. The building itself is worth a look: once the harem, it is well carved with some beautifully executed moonstones. The exhibits range from jewelry and ivory fly whisk handles to a sumptuous crown. There are oddities too like a gun powder cask made from an elk's testicle. Water clocks are interesting - who would have decided on 24 minutes as a measurement of time and then 60 of those in a day - like ours but the opposite!
