Note to future travellers: I would NOT recommend buying any souvenier-type stuff in Kandy, IF you plan to visit Colombo during your trip. Stuff is WAY CHEAPER in Colombo's govt. shops than in Kandy. Some examples: The batik saree cost SL 7000 in Kandy, costs SL3500 in Colombo. An Elephant made with coconut shells cost SL1200 in Kandy but only 500SL in Colombo!!!

This was so so busy, with so many stalls and people crammed in everywhere. It can be a bit daunting but well worth a visit just for the buzz of the place if nothing else.

Visited the market halls with express purpose of buying some quality vanilla beans. The beans on display in the stalls surrounding the quadrangle were poor quality - 10 beans per pack and priced at around the same level of Rs300 a pack. One stall holder took pity on me and pointed me to another stall saying that they had what I wanted. True enough, the owner of this stall did produce when pressed some large plump "A" grade (prime gourmet between 15-18 cm long) beans. His price - non negotiable - was Rs100 each which in my mind was reasonable in such a sellers market. We also bought half a dozen great mangos - after being offered a taste of several types - which we took back to the Kandy Cottage.
