Stayed 2 nights in the Suite and enjoyed a very pleasant and memorable stay at Amaara Sky, which sits high up on a hill in a quiet and residential area, with an absolutely spectacular view over the valley. The view at night of the Kandy town, with its twinkling lights, is just awesome.

A very well maintained hotel, with spacious and beautiful rooms, great service, wonderful food, warm, friendly and courteous staff.
Definitely the best !!

Will not hesitate to recommend it to family and friends.

Bernard & Arlene

Room Tip: Depending on affordability suggest the Suite or Penthouse. Otherwise the Superior rooms are good.

We had a great couple of nights staying here. The hotel's staff were really helpful and friendly. The room was big enough for a family of four and the view from our balcony and the terrace was great, overlooking Kandy and up towards the mountains.

Food was really good – breakfast brilliant and selection of dinner was great for all of us. A transfer to Colombo from here was helpfully organised and the staff couldn't do enough for us.

We loved the location as it was up on the hill in a quiet residential area away from the hassle and hussle of Kandy centre; but close enough to get down/up in a tuk tuk for $3, although do take a map and address as the tuk-tuks don't always know where it is.

If we found ourselves in Kandy again we would stay here without hesitation.

Room Tip: If a family, ask for an extra bed and they will provide in your room.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your review. I am glad you and your family enjoyed their stay with us. Our staff really appreciate your kind words and would love to have you back at the Amaara Sky Hotel on your next visit to Kandy. As you have mentioned, Our deluxe rooms are perfect for families as they are spacious and gives the kids some room to play about. Thank you for your suggestion about the Maps, as we are a relatively new hotel we are continuously engaging in increasing awareness with cabs and tuk tuk drivers!

We booked Amaara Sky as a stop over point on a 2 day flying visit to the central area of Sri Lanka on the final two days of our honeymoon - the majority of which was spent in the southern coastal area of this paradisical teardrop island. We wanted a base to reach out to the sites and temples in Kandy itself and onwards to Dambulla and the stunning world heritage drama of Sigiriya.

The first thing to note is the location - it is roughly 5 to 10 minutes drive uphill from the centre of Kandy and has been designed to afford panoramic views over the luscious scenery and townscape below. On our stay, due to the fairly typical Kandyan rain and mist we only caught glimpses of the view, but it was good when the clouds broke for a while. I did wonder whether the ubiquitous tuk tuks may struggle with the climb, but hey - this is Sri Lanka, tuk tuks can not only fit through impossible gaps, they can also levitate up cliffs if there's a few rupees in it!

The hotel is very well presented and the famous Sri Lankan welcome, complete with abundant smiles, was in great supply. As we arrived late afternoon and were planning to set off early next morning, we had booked one of the mid range rooms, but were offered an upgrade to a superior suite straight away - we ended up staying in the original room simply as it had a balcony all the way round the room and therefore, if the clouds had been kinder, would have given greater opportunity to take in the breathtaking vistas than the larger deluxe room offered as an alternative. The hotel staff were very amenable all the way through - we requested an early breakfast (6:30am) and it was no problem - apart from they apologised profusely that they couldn't serve the hoppers at that time as the batter needed time to settle, but it was no issue at all.

The room was spacious, well presented in contemporary style, comfortable with the full complement of necessary mod cons - enough plug sockets to charge our phones, cameras and tablets, modern safe, very quiet aircon, wifi etc. The bathroom was good, the shower was powerful and did the job - no real issues, apart from the fact I struggled a little with the key (room 204), however my wife didn't have any problem with it.

We took advantage of the spa which was pretty good value for a full body massage - very pleasant, although if we have to be a little niggly, the choice of music was a tad upbeat and not as relaxing as it could have been- some strident classical and tinkly Cladermanesque piano. I would have preferred the admittedly cliched drifty ethnic electronica common to spas across the world. There was also a rather annoying gentlemen, another guest, with a loud gratingly nagging voice (ashamedly a fellow Brit) who was very audible constantly ordering, barracking and cajoling his poor family around in the suite next to the spa. The hotel is carpeted throughout but in spite of this the sound did carry fairly clearly, although we encountered him and his long suffering brood in the restaurant afterwards too and can't hold the hotel responsible for his lack of volume control!

We took advantage of the restaurant, and as many other reviewers have commented the food is excellent - great ambience and faultless service. As it was to be our final 'proper' meal I ordered my favourite Sri Lankan rice and curry - maybe not quite the very best I'd had during my stay, but not far off and so much better than anything I'd had in the UK. Just a touch more spice and fire in some of the dishes and it would have been absolutely spot on. My wife's steak was delicious and great value - cooked properly rare and served with a lovely rich sauce. The only question I have for the management about the restaurant (and mini bar for that matter) was - where was the alcohol? It was the day before Poya day and I was vaguely aware that Sri Lankan licensing laws restrict the sale of alcohol on certain days, however my guidebooks assured me that most hotels waive the laws in favour of their foreign guests - however on this occasion it was fruit juices and soft drinks only with not a bottle of wine or beer in sight. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't absolutely essential, but we would have enjoyed a glass of something on our final night - and perhaps a nightcap of Old Arrack. I didn't get the opportunity to ask if the Amaara 'Dry' stance was a Poya special, or a constant - I'm sure the management will want to respond here. The only element of the food that did suffer from its virgin status was the Tiramisu, usually my wife's favourite, but as an old Italian friend of ours says - you can'ta have a Tiramisa withouta lotta booze! The location didn't give us the opportunity to search out any local bars if we'd really felt the need - but to be honest, we didn't.

I noticed one review here comment on the ambient sounds around the hotel at night - there were the usual assortment of distant birds, the occasional dog and train and lorry sounds echoing up from Kandy below - but they provide the same sonic backdrop as practically everywhere we'd been in SL and didn't disturb our sleep at all in a very very comfortable bed.

Breakfast the next morning was served promptly and was rich and varied with a selection of fine pastries as well as the usual fruit platter and other dishes (my SL omelette was great) and afterwards we gathered ourselves up, settled up with the minimum of fuss and maximum of smiles and our driver, who to all accounts had been well looked after and fed too by arrangement in a building next door, collected us and whisked us away to scale the Lion rock!

Overall and easy and very pleasant experience - I saw nothing about Amaara Sky to give it anything other than top marks and would recommend it as a good base for Kandy and beyond - especially if the clouds are kind enough to give you the views.

Andrew.

It was a fantastic experience at the Amaara Sky, really enjoyed the view and their Suite room well maintained clean rooms and bathrooms, Bathrooms i just didnt like the water pressure which was a bit slow other than it was awesome cleanliness. Staff was lovely the front desk also the waiters and the food was greatly admired. The dinner ant the breakfast was lovely. The location is fantastic but a bit tough to travel up but the view is great so i would say worth the ride all the way for a better view. I wouldn't mind going again....

Room Tip: Go for the Suite

Stayed here over the weekend with a few friends at the suite and it was great. the staff were welcoming from the time we walked in. The food was particularly delicious. As it is on the peak of the mountain the views are fantastic and the surrounding so peaceful. It is an ideal place to go and unwind. Cannot wait to return on my next visit to Kandy.

Room Tip: The Penthouse is absolutely amazing, with views of both the Mountains surrounding Kandy, as well of Kandy town itself.
