“Kandy Greenview and What a View!”
Reviewed 15 April 2013

We had a wonderful time at Kandy Green View Boutique, primarily due to our two hosts, Manjula and Wasanthi. Both took the greatest of care to ensure we had a comfortable stay, enquiring as to our needs at appropriate moments and providing well received pointers on how to make the most of our time in Sri Lanka, both in it's cultural capital and beyond . Whilst the established guide books we find an essential accompaniment when travelling, as the books themselves highlight, nothing is a substitute for a trusted local's knowledge - we subsequently engaged Manjula to be our guide/driver over the next several days. Our hosts spoke fluent English, allowing us to enjoy easy conversations with a couple of engaging Sri Lankan's, with good senses of humour. The accommodation itself provided a clean and simple bedroom and en suite bathroom, and although the shower pressure was a little weak, we subsequently found this was pretty consistent around the country's guest houses. More than offsetting this was a beautifully maintained small lawn and garden on which we had breakfast, overlooking a sharp but lush valley, which also served as an interesting short cut by foot towards central Kandy. Over the three days we were there we saw Kingfishers (several), frogs, squirrels, cranes, and quite fortuitously, a male chameleon's courtship ritual, followed by the less impressive actual mating on the lawn balcony. Whilst the latter was of course a stroke of luck, we witnessed a greater variety of wildlife in those few days in anywhere other than the national parks. One thing of note is that if you stay there you absolutely must try Wasanthi's home cooked food - it was fabulous. If it's a Sri Lankan experience is what you're looking for, then this is the place for you.

Really nice place to stay, a harbour in the chaos of the city. It's a house whose owners are in UK and run by a really nice couple, Wasanthi & Manjula.
It's less then 10 min walk from Temple of Tooth, has an amazing living room with elegant furnitures and a cosy garden where breakfast is served.

What impressed me the most was the attention to details: when you are at the table they serve you as carefully as in a Michelin starred restaurant, each evening anti-mosquito repellent are changed in the rooms.
We needed a doctor and Manjula took us to the hospital with his own car, stayed with us and left just when sure every thing with was ok. When we came back from treedays trekking, they were waiting for us with a cup of tea, smile and sandwiches...we could not ask for more.

Wasanthi & Manjula are really nice, helpful and available at any time, house is clean and breakfast abundant. In my opinion the best place to stay in kandy.

We started our 2 week break here with a three day stop off; chance to see Kandy and have a day trip to Dambulla and Sigiria: this is a charming guesthouse with three nice rooms. We were made to feel very much at home and given lots of good advice. If you do stay here ask for the Sri Lankan breakfast and enjoy one evening meal in the garden with a good view and fruit bats flying overhead. The neighbouring hotel has a pool (100 rupees). Hotel is a short Tuk Tuk ride to Kandy (250 rupees) but can walk to Kandyl lake in 5 minutes. Lovely place to stay.

This was definitely one of the highlights of our journey to Sri Lanka. Wasanthi & Manjula are exceptionally warm (even for Sri Lanka) and took excellent care of us. And the food! Wasanthi gave us a delightful lesson in local ingredients, serving up the best variety of Sri Lanka food we would have on the trip. She even took requests and was consistently able to accomplish the challenging task of satisfying our five-year-old. The bed was even comfortable, which is a rarity in Asia, at least in this price class. We ended up staying for a week.
Location: Kandy Lake is a 10 min. walk; the Temple of the Tooth about 20 min.

Room Tip: The swimming pool at a nearby hotel is open to non-guests for a small charge.

Besides our taxi driver having some serious issues finding the place (make sure you bring the phone number) our stay at the greenview hotel has been nothing but pleasant. It's a small gem with only 2 or 3 rooms but great service and care from the hosts. It's a short walk to the temple and more of stroll down to the city center but we rather liked the location in somewhat less busy part of the town. Although the traffic can be heard quite well anyway.
