“Great location, fabulous boutique hotel”
Reviewed 8 April 2014

Hotel had only recently opened when we arrived, and we had a lovely few days here, helpful staff, if a little over bearing - perhaps trying to perfect things, but great location, pool and views made it all worthwhile. Definitely would recommend it, and the price was right too!

We spent four nights at this wonderful, small boutique hotel. This was our third visit to Kandy and found Elephant Stables to be a superb choice to enjoy a relaxing, peaceful stay. On arrival we were greeted by the manager and given a nice cold drink. We found the manager and all the staff, friendly and helpful at all times. Our accommodation in the Saffron room, was spotlessly clean, spacious and very comfortable. The chef produced the best curry we've tasted, not too hot and spicy but just delicious and full of flavour. It was so good that we had curry for three consecutive nights. Breakfast was very good too, consisting of tea/coffee, fresh fruit juice, fruit platter, yogurt, English or Sri Lankan hot choices and toast............quite a feast! This we could have had any time during the morning. We felt completely relaxed after our stay here and would recommend early booking if you are considering staying at Elephant Stables because it gets booked up very quickly.

This small boutique hotel has been open less than a year. It is set at the highest point on one of the many hills in Kandy & overlooks a large white Buddha. It is quiet being up a narrow road though was rather hard to find. The decor is local but interesting & not too fussy. The rooms are all air conditioned & very spacious with white walls & large comfortable beds. There is a small pool that overlooks Kandy & a large garden with lots of spots to sit & ponder the view. It has Large flatscreen TVs in the rooms with cable & wi-fi internet. We had dinner & breakfast- the Sri Lankan egg hopper breakfast was excellent. Staff were very friendly & helpful.

Tucked away on a quiet hillside road about 3 km from the centre of Kandy, the Elephant Stables is a gorgeous small modern boutique hotel full of character and tasteful decor. We arrived buoyed by the previous reviews and Trip Advisor once again did not let us down. The ES is in a beautifully quiet spot overlooking Kandy and although you can hear some traffic noise, it does not intrude on your stay. We stayed in a lovely large and extremely comfortable 4 poster (complete with mosquito netting) deluxe bedroom (number 104) over looking the pool with views beyond to the surrounding hills. The staff were special in their attention to detail and were extremely comfortable with Westerners including our Brittish ways and sense of humour. I can't emphasise enough how much the staff in the ES added to the whole experience. There was ample lounge space in the hotel if you wanted some peace and quiet but to be honest even if full the ES has loads of space for all.
There was a spotless medium sized pool with enough sun deck area and umbrella's for all the hotel occupants. There was a restaurant within the hotel with the option of eating there or on the veranda by the pool side. Breakfast was included in the room rate and was large and wholesome with a selection ranging from traditional English to a selection of Sri Lankan dishes. The supper dish we had was more of a Sri Lankan banquet with around 10 meat and vegetable dishes followed by a Sri Lankan or a British style sweet course and coffee. It was a superb tasting meal but if I had one small and only a very small issue, I felt it was expensive certainly not by English standards but it was certainly it was the most expensive meal of the trip. That evening we were not given an option of an a La Carte menu only the set menu option.
Overall, the stay at the ES was a memorable experience and I would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel to anybody staying in Kandy.

We spend 2 nights in this hotel on our 15 days trip through Sri Lanka. And we did the right choice as we had a look to other hotels in Kandy as well. You are treated like a honorable guest, have a pool, beautiful quiet garden, view on the surounding hills and all this just some (driving) minutes away from the very busy Kandy.
We did not spend the evening there (but this would be a good option) because we intended to be in Kandy for dinner. But after 8 o'clock PM Kandy is absolutely 'dead' and you cannot do much. Just beside: we had an excellent dinner in the 'White House' restaurant.
We strongly recommend the Elephant Stables.
Only thing to improve: put some signs on the road to find the access road faster, our driver and I had to navigate via GPS to find the place, there is only one sign 'Stone House Lodge' (former name of the hotel) visible on the main access road.

Room Tip: We had the Vanilla Suite, probably the best suite with views to the East and West.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your lovely feedback. We are in the process of installing some signs along the side of the road so that it would be easier for the guests to find the way to the hotel. Hope you will visit us again soon. Cheers!

Good location about 10 min drive from Kandy (but you definitely need a driver to take you into town and around) up in the hills.

We got upgraded to the Vanilla suite which was huge. Great use of polished concrete and wood together, huge 4 poster bed and views over the front and back of the property.

Breakfast was great (as were all our breakfasts in Sri Lanka) and the service prompt and perfect.

The only feedback is that they charge a LOT for dinner - we didn't have it for that reason and maybe we missed out but at over 4,500 Rupees per person, it was even less for us to eat fresh seafood in our 5* Bentota hotel than this so we felt they should cut their prices by 30-50% and we wouldn't have hesitated to try it at least one night.

Normally we would take a bigger hotel of some reliable chain. But in Kandy they all seemed a bit tiered. So we decided to book the Elephant Stables. We were a bit worried about the quit aggressive reaction of guest relations on negative feedback. But we ended up in a very relaxing boutique hotel with extremely kind and helpful staff. Imagine a luxury modern villa with only 6 rooms somewhere in the French Provence. You would pay a lot of money. Here it is still affordable. Absolutely four stars plus.

We booked the Pepper Room. A fresh modern room above the 'living room'. Spacious with a large balcony. Free wifi. Good quality four poster bed with mosquito net. Modern spacious bathroom (big shower / no bath). A few details we disliked, but did not really bother us:
- Low water pressure from the shower (boiler system).
- No curtains, only transparent shades (felt a bit indiscreet).
- Space next to the entry door was open (sounds from the living room freely enter the room and visa versa; if you leave the key in the door, you can open the door from the inside; we blocked it with pillows)

There could be more beds at the pool, but the pool itself is just great and nicely hot. Lunch snacks are available at the pool, but do not order the hamburger if you expect a hamburger (strange pressed meat patties). The quality of the food shows in the evening when chef Indika prepares you a lovely curry or other (western) dish. We liked to talk to him and he was very well prepared to anticipate on personal preferences.

Our personal 'butler' was Pathum. Serving dinner, serving breakfast, serving our room. Sometimes it feels as if he does not always understand those crazy tourists. It may even look if he waits at the table to get a tip, but we think this is just a misunderstanding by some guests. We felt great sympathy for Pathum. For us he was the star member of the staff.

For three days we felt completely free and relaxed. We enjoyed a true feel of vacation.
There is a lot of staff, but they were never standing in our way. No complaints from our driver concerning his accommodation either.

Location is close to Kandy. You need transport (your own driver or a local tuk-tuk). But would you really want to stay at the city centre of this hectic city or would you like to enjoy a nice garden with plenty off exotic birds?

Yes, before leaving the hotel you will have to pay. Try to settle the bill the evening before. It can take some time. During the process though, manager Nalaka is very willing to give you all kinds of useful travel tips.

Room Tip: Any room, but book well in advance

Dear Guest,

Many thanks for your feedback and it's our pleasure to know that you had a fantastic time in Elephant Stables.I would also like to mention that the one or two 'strong' replies we have put previously were actually in reaction to extremely aggressive clients. However, we would like to thank you so much for helping to put the record straight about our wonderful, dedicated staff. It certainly encouraged them a lot.

We will also look at the minor points you mention about your room and make sure these are rectified immediately. We look forward to receiving you in Elephant Stables soon.
