Suisse Hotel stands on a road along the edge of the lake. It's a pleasant walk to the city, with birds and aquatic creatures to look at on the way, (though the quality of the water is somewhat dubious, and there's the inevitable plastic rubbish along the shoreline).
The hotel itself is from a bygone era. Lots of dark timber floors, polished daily, and timber panelling on the walls. Floral arrangements add colour and brass handrails gleam gold in the light. There's a nice pool, too, for days warmer than the ones we stayed in the hotel.
When we checked in, I was delighted by the space of the room, and the lovely big bathroom, with both bath and shower. However I was less impressed by noise from a construction site next door, which made an afternoon rest impossible. I was also worried about being the first room inside a passage that opened to the mezzanine floor above the restaurant - especially since we'd been told there would be music that evening.
Management was obliging. The hotel was pretty full, so only one room was available near our fellow tour group. We relocated from room 301 to room 310. Not a good move! The second room proved to be of a lower standard. Much smaller, no decorative touches, a bit dank and with a tiny bathroom. It was quiet, though, well away from the restaurant area!
We were most impressed by the food. Breakfasts were nice. I skipped dinner the first night so I could go to bed early. My partner enjoyed a Mongolian BBQ buffet. The second night the theme was a 'normal' BBQ buffet. Outside chefs cooked meats on wood-fired BBQs. Inside the range of food was amazing! Dozens of small entrees, beautifully presented and delicious. A huge selection of salads. A row of hot dishes, that included both Western and Sri Lankan food. And so many desserts to chose from. It was hard to know where to start, and when to finish!
Kandy itself was a bit frustrating. We loved visiting the Tooth Temple. However, our stay coincided with an election, so most of the shops in the city were closed. (The election also meant there was no alcohol available anywhere.) I had looked forward to buying gemstone jewellery, but only a couple of jewellers were open for business.
Never mind. We enjoyed our stay at the Suisse Hotel, and could see why the tour company had chosen it for our two day stay.
