“A short stroll along the lake to the city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 October 2013

Suisse Hotel stands on a road along the edge of the lake. It's a pleasant walk to the city, with birds and aquatic creatures to look at on the way, (though the quality of the water is somewhat dubious, and there's the inevitable plastic rubbish along the shoreline).

The hotel itself is from a bygone era. Lots of dark timber floors, polished daily, and timber panelling on the walls. Floral arrangements add colour and brass handrails gleam gold in the light. There's a nice pool, too, for days warmer than the ones we stayed in the hotel.

When we checked in, I was delighted by the space of the room, and the lovely big bathroom, with both bath and shower. However I was less impressed by noise from a construction site next door, which made an afternoon rest impossible. I was also worried about being the first room inside a passage that opened to the mezzanine floor above the restaurant - especially since we'd been told there would be music that evening.

Management was obliging. The hotel was pretty full, so only one room was available near our fellow tour group. We relocated from room 301 to room 310. Not a good move! The second room proved to be of a lower standard. Much smaller, no decorative touches, a bit dank and with a tiny bathroom. It was quiet, though, well away from the restaurant area!

We were most impressed by the food. Breakfasts were nice. I skipped dinner the first night so I could go to bed early. My partner enjoyed a Mongolian BBQ buffet. The second night the theme was a 'normal' BBQ buffet. Outside chefs cooked meats on wood-fired BBQs. Inside the range of food was amazing! Dozens of small entrees, beautifully presented and delicious. A huge selection of salads. A row of hot dishes, that included both Western and Sri Lankan food. And so many desserts to chose from. It was hard to know where to start, and when to finish!

Kandy itself was a bit frustrating. We loved visiting the Tooth Temple. However, our stay coincided with an election, so most of the shops in the city were closed. (The election also meant there was no alcohol available anywhere.) I had looked forward to buying gemstone jewellery, but only a couple of jewellers were open for business.

Never mind. We enjoyed our stay at the Suisse Hotel, and could see why the tour company had chosen it for our two day stay.

Room Tip: Avoid room 310!

Location: overlooking the lake, close to the centre of Kandy but far enough not to have the noise
Appearance: the atmosphere of the 1920s to 1940s, belle epoque all over; the bar area is a marvel and should be classified as a national monument, and so should the former ballroom which is now the restaurant.
Service: fine without being outstanding
Room: I had a junior suite and the staff made a big fuss about this being "the best room in the hotel"... which somehow I doubt. Anyhow, it was very spacious, but I suspect that the furniture had not been replaced for a few decades... maintenance could be better.
Breakfast was nice, dinner really great.
Prices: book via one of the booking engines like booking.com and you'll pay way less than if you book directly at the hotel
TOURS: Do not hesitate to book your tours with the Kandy Tours desk (ground floor, opposite the reception area on the way to the pool) and ask to have Mr. Rodney as a driver. He drove me through Sri Lanka for several days and he was a fantastic guide, speaking English fluently.

we came upon the 'suisse hotel' by chance, which turned into a lovely one night stay. the staff were friendly and got us a great room with a lakeside view from the balcony. the room was magnificent, old-style but immaculate and charming. the buffet breakfast was delicious. will definitely stay for longer next time we are here. the pool was a delicious relief after walking to the centre of town and back. everything is close from this hotel. highly recommended.

Room Tip: the best rooms are with balconies overlooking the lake.

This is an old colonial hotel that has not been sympathetically restored. It has vast amount of potential but has achieved only about 40% of it. The staff were not the best, they were not attentive and rarely smiled or engaged in conversation. The food was good and there is plenty of variety. The room we had was huge, clean and comfortable.

I had been to this hotel few times but never stayed there. This time I spend three days. though the hotel is bit old still providing good service. Staff was friendly . Definitely you won't get this much of friendly atmosphere in any other part of the world. Food was above the average and rooms are very tidy and got every thing we need ,specially the safe. You'll get the value of money you are spending here. It was bit of nuisance to see politicians hanging around with their security personnels. Overall this is one of the best place in Kandy situated close to city and Temple of tooth and I recommend for you to stay.

This old colonial building needs a bit of TLC but then almost everywhere does in Sri Lanka - however if you are looking for pristine then you will be in sterile Dubai not here so it almost goes without saying. Our room was large airy and relatively clean, it had everything we needed and probably more. The restaurant was Ok - how truly Mongolian the Mongolian buffet was I could probably argue about but it would be pointless... However if you are going to see the relic of the tooth a) ignore the guide touts outside b) go in time for the ceremony at 09:30 (05:30 or 18:30) and look out for a grey haired gentleman with an official badge at the entrance to the shrine he will tell you all about it in a very charming way, ask him to show you his picture of him meeting Queen Elizabeth and it will make his day. Don't forget to tip him - he is worth it.
Anyway back to the hotel - everything is perfectly fine for a one night stay, it has a pool and with any luck you won't arrive on World Temperance Day 3 October as we unfortunately did!
