“A Grand Old Dame”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 January 2011

The sweeping approach to the port cochere prepares you for the grand public room. With the hotel being set on the side of a hill, on Kandy Lake, the public rooms are up on the second floor.
Christmas Eve saw a vast buffet of delicious foods with exquisite care having been taken with all the deocrations (tasteful and subdued rather than tacky and tawdry). There was even a children's choir singing some carols from the minstrel's gallery in the central dining hall (this must look spectacular whenever they hold a ball here).
The reason for "Sleep" only getting 2 stars was due to the Christmas eve band. There were quite a few kids staying in the hotel and so it was important for them to be fast asleep by midnight in order to have Father Christmas pay them a visit. The band had been playing during supper and then stopped at 11.20 - lots of kids now fast asleep. Their peaceful sleep, and my own, came to a shattering end at 11.45 when the band struck up again, louder than before and kept going well past midnight. The band was appranetly due to stop at 12.30 but it stopped before then, as soon as pointed out that there were no guests left in the restaurant and that the band was only playing for the staff.
Apart from that glitch, I thoroughly loved the atmosphere in this hotel.
It had also been Lord Mountbatten's residence while he was C-in-C of the Burma campaign.

Me and my gf stayed here for three nights. It was our first stay together so very special occasion but we really disappointed to stay here. it,s located quite away frm city centre and have to spend time and money to get there. Rooms are old colonial style and not very comfortable. I had booked a suite and got some nice views from the windows. Beware of the monkeys can intrude your rooms and steal your belongings. Meals are expensive and it,s not a value for money for sure. We,ll never come back here.

Hotel Suisse is located in front of magnificent Kandy lake, and located close to city center (2mn by tuk-tuk) so the place is quieter than bustling city center. The hotel is inside a large British colonial building and a large part of the hotel is still in old-time style. Breakfast & lunch are very good, and there are some nice features such as the old billiard room. Now rooms are not so clean, and would definately need a refresh, air conditionning was very noisy too. Anyway I still think this is a nice place to stay

Hotel Suisse is very very dirty. If you want to get a good room ask for the best room.Don't choose a room inside because its haunted.Try and find one close to the outdoors. The sleep quality is awful. My bed had no bed frame and you can see the bottom matress which looked like it was a million years old.The service is terrible. We asked for our luggage as soon as possible, but it took them about forty-five minutes to get there.I'd give this hotel a 1 out of 5 stars for everything was slow and intimidating

Before travelling to Sri Lanka we had checked out our scheduled hotels with Trip Advisor and were intrigued by the reviews of the Hotel Suisse. Guests seemed to have either loved it or hated it. Some had mentioned faded grandeur, some just thought it a bit seedy. Some had compared it to the Overlook Hotel in " The Shining", to others it was more "Fawlty Towers". Having endured the experience this summer I feel I am now in a position to say that everybody is right! It is all of these and more.
Our room, oldish and basic, but perfectly comfortable, gave onto a nice lawn and some gardens. On waking up early on our first morning there, my modesty preserved only by M&S underpants, I threw open the door to find myself in the middle of a wedding celebration with very elegantly attired locals milling around, politely greeting the half-naked Englishman. Mustering as much dignity as possible, I beat an exit back into the room as nonchalantly as possible. They were later also extremely understanding when we had to walk through the middle of the Wedding Buffet in the restaurant, in swimsuits, to get to the pool. The restaurant deserves special mention. One dinner was themed "Mongolian Night". Hitherto ignorant of any Historical ties binding Sri Lanka and Mongolia, we wondered what exotic culinary delights were in store for us. It turned out to be Lasagne, which I, in my ignorance. had always thought to be Italian in origin. A musical accompaniment to this fine fusion of cultures and gastronomy was provided by what seemed to be a group of Bolivian Indians, dressed in black, blissfully slaughtering " Hotel California", ( I think ).
Reception hardly ever answered the phone, neither did Guest Relations. Re-tiling work in the room above ours went on until 3 o'clock one night despite repeated phone calls from us. We were told that work had finished, which they insisted was the case even after I had held the phone up for them to hear the tile saw and hammer in action. It only went on until one pm. the following night. Emergency repairs, we were told. Emergency re-tiling? I forget to mention the very good Ayurvedic massage centre which seems to be housed in a MASH-like environment of cubicles separated my green curtains and screens.
So, really, not so much The Overlook as The Overlooked. One of the main aspects to have been overlooked is any basic element of management. The Reception staff, all very elegant and pleasant, seemed to us to be an unholy mix or disturbing blend of carefree civil servant, mindless zombie and recently beheaded chicken. It may be what Basil Fawlty might one day have aspired to. But, hey, as they say, we weren't expecting a five star hotel or service and have some surreal tales to delight our friends with.

we were a bit apprehensive having read the previous reviews (which too had some basis as we found out)... but were pleasantly surprised . We arrived early morn 6 am and hence were asked to accomodate in a ground floor room as other guests had not checked out yet. The rooms on the ground floors are pretty much what the earlier reviews said. Around 10 am we were given the renovated rooms on the 2nd floor and i think at 68 USD its a steal. Very friendly staff. Nice ambience and the sunday dinner is special with a live sri lankan calypso band.

you cannot stay many places for 5000 rps per night, room was huge was on the 4th floor which was the refurb one.. I was on local rates because my husband is Sri lankan.. The service was excellent and they have hot water which alot of budget hotels in Sri LAnka dont have. WAs close to the main stretch.. Alot better than QUeens and and alot of the other hotels are a long walk to main place.. Was not the ritz, but its an old governs building and i loved it.. I would definately stay here again.. The bar has entertainment at night and the buffet for brekfast was tasty.. Overall happy.
