“A Nice Hotel for the Non-complaining Traveller”
Reviewed 9 February 2012

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights at the Hilltop Kandy. Overall, we had a pleasant experience.

1) Food - Huge spread for breakfast and the buffets for lunch and dinner. But we did not find too many authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, and much of the varieties on offer was Western-influenced
2) Rooms - The Rooms are decent, though they (at least ours) leave a lot of room for improvement. Nothing fancy, and from the bathroom you hear people walking and talking on the corridor, and even in the next rooms. So, I was kind of unnerved at that.
3) Ambience - The ambience is good, and the views are also beautiful.
4) Courtesy of the staff - Staff were very friendly and seemed to be available just moments after a call has been made for assistance.

Disadvantages:
1) The climb up the hill to get to the Hotel virtually places you under Hotel-arrest. We thought of going out on a stroll to the town, as we normally do when visiting a new place. But, the steep climb dissuaded us and we stayed put at the Hotel.
2) Internet - Wifi is available, but at a cost of SLR 250 per hour. I felt this was a bit too much, considering they were charging quite a lot for the rooms anyway. This could have been a complimentary service
3) Reaching the rooms from the Reception seemed to take eternity. One has to walk a lot of distance to reach the rooms, and there are no elevators/lifts. One has to take dingy looking stairs
4) When there is a programme or function at the Party Hall, the music from the Hall can be heard blaring all over, giving you sleepless nights
5) The balconies overlook the Kandy bus and rail stations. So, people might find it a problem. We enjoyed it, though.

You need to stay at Hilltop if you do not complain a lot about there being rust stains along the bathroom shower curtains and such small stuff. Do not expect ultra luxury, and enjoy the place for the ambience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony, if you would like one. Some rooms do not have balconies. Also, menti...

nice gradual climb from the main road, a welcome entrance, small walk through neat corridoors opening up near the swimming pool and dining area, colourfully fresh large rooms with lots of sunshine from the attached balconies, clean crisp linen, great views, modern toilets, good food with great variety, very relaxing ambience, absolute value for money, great service, very helpful attendants, a no frill lobby, just the right place in kandy.

Room Tip: pls ask for balcony rooms with view

First thing you will notice when you reach the place is the winding road along the hill experience. You tend to get the feeling that your vehicle will fall off the cliff any moment! I think for me that experience was terrifying nevertheless exciting!!
Stay at the hotel was ordinary at best. Rooms were not that clean. Bathrooms were decent although hot water supply was an issue as it would in a moment gush out steaming hot water and surely enough I got burnt more than once!!!
Room service was ok. Overall an experience which failed to meet my expectations but not a dreaded nightmare either!

We had 4 nights at the Hill Top. While adequate, I expect you could find much better places to stay. Being high on a hill, it had views but was still noisy (overlooking railway station) and not really feasible to walk to nearby locations. Rooms adequate but very tired. Food in dining room mediocre. Staff were friendly but did not appear to be well trained.

I would suggest exploring hotels on southside of lake which would have views and probably somewhat quieter. They too would not be easily accessible but staff training and rooms likely to be better.

We loved this hotel. It was very comfortable. The room was clean, there was plenty of hot water in the shower. The staff was friendly. The pool was clean. The restaurant food was ok, not exceptional. The staff went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. The location is not in a place where you can walk downtown, but the tuk-tuks can get you there and back. Sitting in a lounge next to the pool with food and drink being served to you is about as good as it gets!

The hotel in general is slightly run down, but nothing to really detract from the experience. The room was clean and well equipped, even having a couple of UK style plug sockets which was a bonus. The route from Kandy to the hotel is quite a steep road and we didn't attempt to walk up it (it was raining quite a lot), but the walk down was fine and took around 10 minutes to the main drag. Getting a tuk tuk up the road was quite amusing, there were several moments when we didn't think it would make it!
The buffet dinner and breakfast are good value and the food is tasty. The musicians playing to you at the table at dinner were quite embarrassing but they only played one song and moved on after promoting their CD. They didn't ask for money as we'd feared.
We only spent one night here, and for that it was a good choice. The views over the town are lovely, you can see monkeys playing around on the roofs below and it's near enough to the town for some sight seeing. The staff are helpful although a little scatty when there is more than one person at the reception desk. There are lots of staff milling around, cleaning etc, and they are all friendly.

Room Tip: The 5th floor (room 501+) is the top floor with the best views.

Usually manage to make the most of the places we visit and stay but this wasnt the best of experiences. We stayed here as part of Thomson 'Discover Sri Lanka' and cant understand they use a hotel which is in need of a major refurbishmnent, the rooms (especially bathroom/shower) were not clean. The food left a lot to be desired and we are usually happy to have a go at anything! Table covering were not changed and were stained. Sound proofing of the rooms need a lot to be desired and we were kept awake every night. As we had to drive to Colombo to catch a flight, we asked (and this was confirmed via a phone call to our room) for awake up call at 1.00am , good job i also set my phone alarm as this didn't happen ( no apology was made) On the whole the staff were helpful and cheerful and one bonus was the swimming pool was clean which was appreciated after a days touring.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the top (level 4/5) as thet are a little quieter.
