We have stayed two nights in this hotel. The area of Kandy is not really our favourite area, but it was part of the tour. The hotel is pretty close to the center of Kandy so you can go there easily.

The hotel itself was average, the beds are OK. The overall impression is that it could use an improvement on some places. We did not like the food that much, the variety was pretty low and the taste pretty flat.

All in all, ok but not outstanding....

We were due to stay here for two nights as part of our trip around Sri Lanka.

The welcome when we arrived was ok - nothing out of this world and nothing compared to what we had and subsequently received.

We were escorted through the hotel which was a building site as they were renovating. It was not at all clean: Torn carpets, wires trailing and rubbish on the floors.

Got to our room and it was awful. It smelt of cigarettes and was really very basic. It was not clean either.

I went and complained and was eventually told that they could get someone to come and spray some air freshener. I explained that this would not be good enough.

I asked to upgrade rooms but was told all hotels are the same.

Eventually we were taken to a room that was not so smelling. But other than that it was no better. The view was terrible and there were workmen literally looking through the window. The place was grubby too and there were hairs on the floors that were not ours.

Final straw came when they brought in the single mattress for the third bed. It was brown, stained and split. There was no mattress protector, just the sheet. I would not have allowed my son to sleep on that - it was gag inducing.

Despite an entourage of managers and workers, they even showed me an exact same room that was supposedly "better" and an assurance that all the banging, drilling etc would finish at 5 and not start again until 9, it was all just too much. We checked out.

We eventually checked in at the Earls Regency which will get 5 stars in my forthcoming review. I can't believe they are part of the same group. The Hilltop really lets the Aitken Spence group down. Yes it's budget, but it was far too much money for what it was giving.

Only positive was the young manager (I forget his name, but he assured me he used to work in the Marriott in Southampton) who tried his best to help but ended up conceding that there was nothing he could do. I hope that he gets his chance in a decent hotel, he was a nice lad and clearly embarrassed by the whole thing. It's for this reason I do not post the photos I have!

Not sure where the people who have given this 4/5 stars have stayed before, because we are by no means snobs, but it is literally one up from a hostel.

it wasn't too far from the city so decided to stay in this hotel, as we didn't have any prior bookings anywhere. staff was friendly and the food was good. calm and quite. Bit of a old building if i'm not mistaken and had some warning on the windows about monkey's. overall the experience was good.

Room Tip: probably a one with a good view (view towards the city)

Stayed here for two nights. First impression was not great but it got better later on. There was a special function and the car park was packed when we showed up, there was hardly any space left. Had to park outside the normal parking area and had to move my vehicle twise to allow others to leave the premises. It was past mid night when I finally managed to get a proper spot to park my car. The private party was going at full blast and it was very noisy in the room till midnight. Rooms are spacious, slightly outdated yet comfortable. Restaurant did not offer a huge selection but what they served was pretty good. Good, clean pool and nice bar. The second day was much peaceful and relaxing as there were no private parties taking place. It's an average hotel, yet comfortable and ok for the price.

It was our first visit to the Hotel and was the last out of 4 Aitken Spence Hotels that we visited during our Honeymoon Tour. My wife and I arrived at the Hotel for a one night stay, after spending two nights each at Heritance Kandalama, Bandarawela Hotel and the Heritance Tea Factory respectively.

The location of the Hotel is very strategic and is quite easy for any visitor to access some key tourist attractions of Kandy (The Temple of the Tooth, Peradeniya Gardens) very easily.

The room (303) had a good view of the City (with the Kandy Railway Station in close proximity and the Temple of the Tooth in the distance) and in the night time the entire city lit up, giving our room a lovely vibrant view. The room and the linen were quite clean. The standard of the washroom-although manageable-could have been better. Most of the time, the entire washroom would get wet, as water from the shower would flow through the peripehries of the shower cubicle. The amenities of the room was in accordance with 2-star standards. Although it would have been better if a room safe was there.

The service and the food was good. However, it was nothing exceptional.

The Hotel is a very good 'stop-over' point for any visitor to take a break from a long tour or has some other commitments during the day time in the city and would want a hotel to sleep during the night. It is an ideal city hotel.

Our recent stay at the hotel was most comfortable and enjoyable due chiefly to the services extended by the Manager, Mr. Melder and his staff who displayed excellent customer relations and a genuine desire to help the hotel's guests enjoy their stay. The hotel and its environs are clean and well maintained. The structure of the building itself, with corridors extending in different directions, makes it rather unique, and we were intrigued to learn that it had originally been a nunnery. The spectacular location of the hotel right in the city itself is a great attraction - at night, seen from the hotel, the crowded city is turned into a wonderland of light.
