Stayed here for 3 nights. The first night was in a "suite" ($150) as that was the only room available. The next 2 nights was in a standard room ($85). The suite is in the western wing overlooking the street. Obviously being a very run down building the rooms are not soundproofed and at 5am the buses and tuk-tuks honking will wake even the dead! The next two nights were in a quieter pool facing room. However at 3am the second night the A/C unit broke down and water started pouring into the room from the vents which required a couple of towels to stop the flood. Then the third night the same fixed A/C unit's fan broke and emitted a high pitched screeching noise at 4am. So once that was switched off, and just as I was about to sleep again the staff started firing flares to chase monkeys away! So 3 nights of no sleep.

The room rates include breakfast and you're best avoiding it.

Try somewhere else first!

Queens Hotel is in the very best position in Kandy - opposite the Temple of the Tooth and the lake, and adjacent to the commercial centre and a few blocks from the market. Yet, once inside the main doors, you enter a very different world - quiet, comfortable and a special experience in itself.
Little seems to have changed since the 1930s. The lobby is sparkling and the corridors smell of oiled wood (mahogany - ?). The wide spiral staircase encircles an old lift with concertina doors and the common spaces are replete with old china cabinets, fotos, collections of pos(!) and wondrous memorabilia.
The rooms are adequate and comfortable and surprisingly quiet. Altho ours didn't, most have a view over either the pool & garden or the street life outside. Each room's new bathroom is fine. But it's not the rooms that are the highlight.
The staff seem to be everywhere, and all willing to help to make the experience even better. The breakfasts are a special highlight and not to be missed. Piles of fresh food of all description (from local options to fresh croissants). Staff hover around, in their white coats, to ensure that the cutlery and crockery are cleared away and hot drinks replaced as soon as needed. A great start to each day for visitors.
The bar area is small, but very comfortable and the occasional piano player in the lobby adds to the ambience. The pool is clean and deligtfully situated in the gardens - a great way to start each day.
The floral dispays somehow just polish off the whole experience.
On top of all this, the place is surprisingly attractively priced. It really is great value for money. Queens Hotel was a highlight of our tour around Sri Lanka and is unreservedly recommended.
My only (& trivial) complaint is that, like much of Srti Lanka, it is difficult to get a good cup of tea! Message to staff - don't stew the tea.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the back are a little quieter - but even street rooms are not too noisy and show a fascinating view of street life (Kandy gets going around 6:00 am). If you're not too nimble check that the shower & bath has low sides - some of them have very high sides, requiring a climb to get in & out.

the hotel is very near the Kandy temple and accessible to shopping center in Kandy.
the lobby is nice.. however i find the hallway to the room a little dark.. for one night of stay is good for me but otherwise i would prefer not to sleep alone.. the room is quite gloomy.. little dark for my liking.. plus the old wood furniture adds to the creepy feeling.. also, the hot shower did not work at first..
otherwise, its a good hotel, maybe just to add more life in the corridor and the rooms.

as mentioned by so many this hotel has the perfect location in Kandy. It is also a lovely old building. What it needs is someone with some know how to and it could be a real top hotel. At present its just ok. The place has great atmosphere but the rooms are quite average to poor but quaint.

So staff where fantastic, others less so.
