We ended up here when then travel agent messed up our booking. It was just dreadful. It looks ok from the outside but is in dire need of renovation.
Unfortunately our rooms were on the 2nd floor overlooking the main road and the buses and tuk tuks started at 5am.
The pool was depressing. We had to go down a rickety fire escape to get there.
We had a connecting room, though not one which connected with our kids' room. the connecting door didn't shut properly and you could see light through the gap.
The buffet was dreadful. No real choice and an empty restaurant. Breakfast was no better.
We felt the staff did what they could, but it didn't really help.

Don't let your tour guides put you into a "luxury" tourist hotel just because they get better commissions at those. They are all well out of the centre of Kandy and the slow traffic means it takes ages to get to the sights. However, the Queens hotel is right across the road from the entrance of the Temple of the tooth and only a short walk away from the other things of interest to the tourist.

It is also significantly less expensive than the regular tourist hotels and the staff are good.

The rooms are acceptable with efficient air conditioning. The breakfast is good and, on the day we were there, was interesting because of the robed monks and white clad Japanese pilgrims to the temple if the Tooth.

Room Tip: Ask for one from where you can see the lake or Temple. These are at the front at the right hand side.

This hotel is in a wonderful location but it has it's problems. The staff are either not trained or can't be bothered. The service was very poor and the food not very good. The hotel is centrally placed in the centre Kandy and is ideal for visits to the Temple of the Tooth and the Botanical Gardens which are well worth a visit if you are prepared to put up with the hotel.

I chose this hotel because it is just in front on the temple and very central. Also the cost was fair and in Kandy I would not spend too much time inside the hotel so thought it was a good idea. Also the hotel has history. That said, as a solo traveler I did not enjoy my sleep experience. The hotel is super old, the room is giant and you can hear any noise from outside. I had to call reception to ask my neighbor to make silence at 1am. ( Well, non polite people is not the hotels fault).
The hotel is huge and my room was super far from reception and walking during the evening alone was a creepy experience. All is quite and you hear steps and a staff appears from nowhere. Scary.
After all, breakfast was nice and food at the restaurant is nice and in a fair price. Also you have all around the corner such as bank, mall, groceries, etc. A tuk tuk can take you around and also if you need to book a car to take you to your new destination you can find small agencies near the hotel. The staff was cool especially in the bar and restaurant, the ones in the receptions can improve their attention to the client. The swimming pool is nice.
So overall not a bad hotel but definitely not the one for me, at least not when I am travelling alone. Maybe the hotel should consider putting solo travelers a bit closer to reception so they feel safer. ;)

Maybe there are some modernized rooms but we didn't get one. We had a standard room - a huge, quiet room but very dark and gloomy with plumbing from the 1950's, we eventually worked out the hot and cold bath taps were reversed but I nearly burnt my hand trying to turn the hot tap off as scalding water was leaking out round the tap. Probably a good idea to ask to look at a couple of rooms and then choose - the West wing is miles from reception and all unmodernised I reckon.
We also had water pouring thro' our ceiling at 4am, we rang reception and were then awake for hours, no one came and no apology. They seem to have loads of guests and don't care.
The pool and garden are a wonderful refuge from the mania outside and make this hotel worth staying in. We had one buffet meal which was OK but you wouldn't want it more than one night. Service in the pool area is haphazard, we waited 1hr for club sandwich which was horrid.
We'd had a problem with a train strike and went to travel desk - he's only interested in selling tours and taxis, v unhelpful but reception desk got us the phone number. Some very nice staff, particularly the chap who cleaned our room, we had a lovely elephant made out of a towel sitting on our bed!

Room Tip: Ask to look and choose if you can!
