“A nicely located heritage hotel”
Reviewed 24 August 2014

We stayed (myself, my wife and daughter) two nights in this heritage hotel two years back. It is located at the heart of the city, in front of the Kandy lake. Dalada, The Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, the cultural centre and the market, are just at a walking distance from the hotel. It is a building of British colonial architecture which is almost a century old and now renovated and modified into a 3-star hotel. Reception and other staff were cooperative, the travel desk person was helpful. The ambience of the restaurant, music accompanying dinner were alright, but not the food. Anyway, there is a Pizza Hut adjacent, just in front of the Dalada bus stand and many more small restaurants nearby, so eating outside was not a problem. Some rooms are having the old llook and dampness, probably bacause it was raining that time, and a bit noisy due to the location; otherwise for a short duration family trip it is an ideal hotel.
Rent was not too high ($85 per night) as booked on net at discounted rate, it is worth of that.

Room Tip: Lake view rooms are better and well maintained.

We stayed just for one night to watch the Perahera. Excellent location for that. The staff were very attentive and the service was good. The food was very good too. However, the room we were in is in need if a face lift. It looked a little dated. That said, it is an old hotel and it wouldn't need to be "modernised" too much.

It is true that this place is very expensive during the Kandy Esala Perahera season. The rooms are also not up the best standards. The best way to describe the rooms are colonial and rustic with an attempt to modernize. Food is also not the best but above average to good 9actually, I can rate food as good)
But they give you the best premium seats for the Perahera. If these kinds of traditional cultural stuff are your thing, then you will not regret at all. You can understand that you are paying that huge price for that and tat only is enough to justify the price. It is truly amazing. I actually could not book the best dates (best date is the final Randoli perahera). I made the booking on May 2014 and the only rooms available for the 3rd Kumbali Perahera. But even that was worth it. Amazing and Fabulous experience.
But if you really want the best experience, book the final Randoli day. It will be an amazing experience. But if not available, any Randoli perahera day will be fine. In not available, try for last Kumbal perehera day. Even Failing which, any Kumbal perahera also will be ok.
Book a room with a balcony. Hotel will give a room that facing the street which Perahera procession goes (either Senanayaka Street or Dalada dtreet. This depends on each perehera). But better to request that to make sure.

Room Tip: Second floor rooms with balcony view facing the particular street that Kandy Esala Perahera (Process...

Room was incredible value at £77 for a triple (plus tax etc). Bit of street noise but tolerable. Bathroom was very period (but lacked hot water and a decent shower). The room itself was incredibly spacious and looked fantastic. Breakfast was excellent and the staff were very helpful and polite. I'd definitely recommend this hotel if you're staying in Kandy and don't mind the aforementioned points.

The Queens is known by everyone, going to Kandy and is almost as much a landmark as the lake and temples.

Its location is superb, with the Temple of the Tooth just minutes away and the lake across the road also.

If you want shops they also are very close and if you get lost everyone knows the Queens Hotel.

We only had breakfast in the hotel as we were out most of the time and with numerous restaurants nearby eating was never an issue and for anyone desperate for a pizza, there is a Pizza-hut opposite the hotel entrance.

Rooms were fine, not as luxurious as some people may expect and staff were also very helpful.

Room Tip: If booking via a web site, I would advise to confirm booking using an email also as there are to man...

I traveled Solo to see the Perahera. The staff at the hotel took particular care to make sure I was well looked after. The room was quaint and very clean. The shower worked perfectly for me every day at all times-I stayed for 5 nights. The pool area was well kept and clean. Queens Hotel is a slice of history and to stay there is a venture into history. There have been a few harsh reviews of this hotel, but if you want the George V, stay in Paris.
My stay as a solo traveler was great. Location and service super.

Excellent! Cozy room, high ceilings, massive doors, good sound insulation, delightful retro elevator... I felt presence of Elizabeth II... and despite fatigue (5 hours of a way to Kandy) there were amazing dreams!
