“Nice place to stay”
Reviewed 24 January 2012

This place was very nice to stay but it was too far fromt he city centre. It took us almost an hr and hour to find this place. The day we reached was Christmas eve and the restaurent had onyl a buffet which costed 1000 LKR and as we wanted an alacarte menu, they denied to provide us with one. They asked us to use the buffet as it was almost 9.30pm. After much explanation, the manager decided to open us a few dishes from the buffet for us to eat. This was a little embarressing butt he food was good so we did not bother to feedback.

Room Tip: Too far from city centre

The rooms (2) were clean enough for sri lankan standards, though you'd expect more for roughly 90 dollars/night (halfboard). There's a small balcony with a nice view. The TV was working although it had a bad signal and there aren't many power sockets if you're planning on recharging your gadgets.

The food buffet was good and the staff friendly. Like ever so often in Sri Lanka, I have to say that it is not worth the money, but still quite a nice place to stay.

Not walking distance from anywhwere, but a well maintained hotel in a great elevated position, near a giant Buddha.

Service and food was excellent. The rooms were spacious and pleasant. And the entertainment in the bar at night was nicely pitched for us, after a long day visiting Kandy's attractions. Don't miss the Botanic Gardens in Kandy, the plants are stunning.

We'd certainly be happy to return to the Swiss residence if we returned to Kandy, it was one of the best hotels we stayed at in Sri Lanka.

We stayed here for 1 night during our 9-day tour of Sri Lanka and this was one of our favorite hotels. The rooms were clean and in good working order however the bed was a little too firm. The food was served buffet style, so it was easy to find good food that we liked.

The best part was the views from our room. The Swiss Residence is built into a hill, so there are only a couple rooms per floor. Outside our window, we could see the valley in front of us and monkey's climbing on rooftops. Outside the stairwell window, we got the best view of the giant Buddha statue at the top of the hill in Kandy.

Again, one of our favorite stops. We did go during off season so we didn't have any noise problems like other reviewers.

This hotel has a huge potential. Location is good, lobby looks nice, food is fine. But when it comes to rooms - well... bathroom is a bit old and the biggest problem is noise. It is impossible to sleep there!!! You can hear every step and every word from corridor, just awful. Plus, there are spiders and monkeys :)

We stayed here for one night as a part of our two day tour to Kandy. Firstly extremely steep incline to get to hotel built on a hill up very high. Our mini bus had to have two attempts at getting us up to door. On first arrival looked okay entrance quite grand with a beautiful staircase leading from here. Not for disabled guests. after our welcome drink we were ushered up stairs and down corridors to our room 306 i thnk. Opened the door and could have cried, we had swopped our luxury bungalow at Ranwelli holiday village for absolute rubbish hotel. As soon as i got there could nt wait for it to be over. Yet worse was still to come. Room was very antiquated and furniture was rank. Bathroom looked like it was in need of total renovation. There was however, a fridge with mini bar facilities, kettle and coffe, tea and bottled water. We opened dark shutters which i beleive are a feature of this hotel to a balcony with wide reaching views over the town so this wasnt the best view but it was interesting sight never the less. Food service was absolutley terrible agree with other reviews they were removing food before buffet was closed. Food was very cold, and we were told we couldnt have a pancake like dish with anything other than curry. After we finished our first course the waiter started claering our table in totality all crockery and all cutlery, we wanted sweets and further food at this point so he was quite disgusted when he had to lay table again. Bar service rubbish sat in bar area for at least twenty minutes while other staff walked by before a staff member opened this facility up. After this as we had early journey ahead again we retired to our room. We were followed by a young man that was a staff member who insisted on escaorting us all 5 people in total in our party to each and every room so that we could see the decorations he had done to our beds which was very pretty flower petals every where, but he clearly wanted a tip hence he took each of us to the door. Shame the flower petals did not help with a sweeter smell on the bed linen. It smelt like nothing on earth the only think i can liken it to is cat wee. We had retired around eleven so not particularly early. The noise for at least two hours people appeared to be shouting very echoy in the large space outside our doors. Doors were banging for hours, it took me back to a past employment i actually felt like i was in large prison cell. When morning came i couldnt wait to get out of there. Went to breakfast room as we had a long day ahead of travel, breakfast was no better cold unappetising. I tried to have toast but toaster broke half way through someone came to help me and i was shocked to see him pull wires out of a plug socket . Eventually i got the toast without being electrocuted. Wished i hadnt bothered the butter or margarine tasted like rancid fat. This hotel was part of a tour we booked with anthony from opposite the ranweli holiday village, We were told it was a good hotel by him, believe me it was dreadful experience which we would never repeat

Room Tip: our party had three rooms on the third floor and all were awful apart from far reaching views due to...

I have to agree with most of your reviewers that this Hotel is basic . HOWEVER we need to bear in mind that Sri Lanka due to political / natural diasters & lots of other problems over the last twenty years ++ has not enjoyed the Tourist Pound / Euro etc & watched its neighbours India & Thailand leap ahead but fortunately Sri Lanka is now back on the tourist trail from we observed at the various tourist sites
Yes this Hotel needs to be rebuilt ( to big a job to refurbish ) but so do lots of other things in the country ie Roads , Electricity supply etc BUT thats the charm of the place when its rebuilt from a early 19th century building to a faceless plastic chain hotel will we be happy then ?
Location is its only feature & its like stopping in a musuem , the staff do what they can with very little direction & investment If you think the public places are bad , imagine what is like behind the scenes
Yes we stopped in a famous suite + it probably was 5 * 100 years ago But we all enjoy good food clean bedrooms / bathrooms in every day life --Sri Lanka is an experience and lots of people of different nationalities are visiting before it changes
Surely for one night you can close your eyes for a little little while, enjoy your G /T in the very heavy panelled lounge / bar before going out on to terrace then marvel at the decor of the ballroom for your evening meal
So enjoy the Historical Experience for one night while you can

Room Tip: Very difficult as would think all rooms are very old & all have some problem ++ it spite of all...
