We stayed for one day and it was quite enjoyable. The food choice is limited, the rooms are big and clean, though. I would not recommend the SPA, however, you get a free foot massage when checked-in. The pool is quite small but clean and not crowded at all.

This is an okay 3 star hotel in a relatively quiet corner of Kandy city. It has great views of the lake and city beyond BUT……The hotel is undergoing a major refurbishment and if you ask me, it cannot be finished soon enough!

This was our second stay at Thilanka and it was disappointing. Let’s hope that once the renovations are complete and more staff training provided this place will be back to its old class standard. For now…it’s a thumbs down for Thilanka and here’s why….

Reservation:
We had organised our reservation through e-mail as reservation staff did not seem have adequate English telephone conversation ability – we were passed from person to person as soon as our questions became too difficult. Ultimately we gave up dealing with them over the phone and chose to communicate via e-mail and would recommend this form to other travellers.

Check In:
This was Fantastic! The level of service we received was worthy of a star class hotel. We were immediately met by happy friendly staff that provided us with a refreshing welcome drink. We were allocated rooms on the third floor and our luggage was promptly brought up to our rooms.

Rooms:
Our rooms had a lovely balcony hosting excellent views of Kandy city and the lake. The room section was decorated well and had adequate facilities but this is where it all ends. The bed was not a queen or king, but two singles joined together. This could be forgiven was it not for the fact that there were very uncomfortable. Guests can’t really make use of the balcony due to the infestation of scavenger monkeys that plague the place in the morning and afternoon. Yes, they will wonder into your room and break anything within their reach - be aware! Okay….so you can live with the bed situation and even work around the monkey brigade….but there is no forgiving the hotel for the state of the bathrooms!! These have not been renovated for many years. The mirrors are old and basin area is old and tired but worst of all is the shower ceiling is covered with fungus. We brought this to the staff’s attention and although they were prompt to take action, the only action taken was to cover the site with white tape – Huh?

Facilities:
There is not much to do at the hotel. No gym, one pool, no WIFI, no gardens to wonder through. Not even a nice bar with a view to while away the time (although one is being constructed with the renovations). I probably can’t recommend the buffet restaurant either, not much choice and it isn’t inviting to guests with it being so dark and not well lit.

My advice to travellers….treat yourself and stay at Mahaweli Reach Hotel, you get much better value for money and more joy staying there.

We stayed here just before Christmas and were given a room past the pool on the way to the breakfast room. What a horrible room. Concrete decor. No window. The only natural light would come through the door, but as we were on a pathway, everyone would have been looking into our room. Bed was full of ants so had to call housekeeping to change bedding before going to bed. TV didn't work. Breakfast was basic and uninspiring. Staff were pleasant, though not particularly efficient. We did meet with the manager the next day to give our feedback and he was very pleasant, but unfortunately that night on our holiday had been lost in a pretty miserable hotel. The newer rooms in the main building looked much nicer and the public areas were pleasantly decorated. I think we just got the old room - last one available due to it being peak season. Massively overpriced for what it was. Lovely views over Kandy from the pool and a short walk down the hill to Temple of the Tooth.

Room Tip: Definitely make sure you are in the main building and not in the rooms around the side of the buildi...

Great setting overlooking the lake and Kandy proper. But all of the basic operations are in need of "spiffing up". Electrical outlets inoperable, elevator spasmodic, room thermostat hanging out of wall, wi-fi hard to get on and only available at restaurant, pool area unkempt, etc. Just sort of run down at the heels and shabby. Some might think this is quaint and just normal for the country, but with just a bit of better management attention it could be so much better.

The hotel and pool have great views of Candy. It does seem to attract a lot of tour groups and beware of getting to breakfast after a big group of European tourists have descended. The staff were very slow at replenishing the food.
Rooms were spacious with nice balconies and good bathrooms. Lots of monkeys about, they come into the room and grab food if you leave the balcony windows open...

From our first step into this hotel we were make to feel like honoured guests. A welcome drink and hot flanels to clean ourselves we were then escorted to our rooms. Huge rooms stylishly decorated and a strong warning about keeping your balcony doors shut to keep the monkeys out. Good advise as the monkeys were quickly down to investigate the new guests! The bathroom was a bit tired but very clean. The buffet food for dinner and breakfast was lovely and enough variety to suite all tastes. Good attentive restaurant staff and the music from the live band was great and really made our night. Good laughs and jokes with all around such a happy visit. For being in the town and so close to the temple of the tooth, the pool was lovely and it felt rural and relaxing with the lovely woodland right next to the hotel and views of the lake. We were only there one night and wished we could have stayed longer. For what the charge this place is real value for money.

Room Tip: get a room with a balcony over looking the lake.

Am pretty surprised by some of the negative reviews about this hotel, we loved it!
Spent 2 nights here, it cost around USD$135 p night in at Xmas peak season, and would have to say they were the most comfortable nights of the trip.

The good: Large, spacious, modern, clean and comfortable rooms and bed (all of which was rare in SL). It has magnificent views over Kandy (ask for a lake view). There's a nice pool and the food was very good both at dinner and breakfast. The Xmas Eve Dinner was great as was all the food there, the outdoor/indoor restaurant ambience was good and we felt very well looked after by the great staff. We also went to the Ayurvedic Spa and had a massage, herbal steam bath and oil bath which was a great way to relax for 90 mins.

The bad: Other than the shower leaking onto the bathroom floor and having to lock your patio door too keep the monkeys out - not much!

Overall: A very comfortable hotel with a pleasant charm about it in a good central hill-side location for Kandy. Don't think you will go too far wrong here, really enjoyed it.
