“original hotel with lots of charm”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2013

This hotel has rooms with a very original lay-out, and which are beautiful. Only down-side was that the shower changes from hot to cold water a lot!
Because the hotel is a little bit uphill, the views from the dining area and pool area are great.
The bar is nice as well.
Be aware of monkeys here who will steal everthing you carry with you to the pool or bar area.
Spa was ok.

Room Tip: The rooms near the dining and pool area are probably the nicest ones (we had 107 which is right up t...

Initial impressions are not good. The hotel is heavily used by groups and the Reception and corridors to the rooms have all the charm of an underground car park. But it gets better and the location is hard to beat with fabulous views over Kandy. In our room (a few doors away from the restaurant) the bedroom area was divided from the (separate) shower and toilet by a screen that housed the wardrobe, safe, dressing table, kettle etc. It worked, but the area was very dark and cramped and you had to be careful when making tea/coffee. Good pool on the main terrace overlooking Kandy, with an adjacent bar. We thought the food was very good. The evening buffets had a wide selection of well prepared food and on the two nights we were there, live music. All in all, a good base for seeing the sights and then moving on.

The hotel is a nice one, nothing luxouriuos, but nice. The most spectacular thing about it is the magnificent view over Kandy. The location is good with walking distance to the temple of the tooth and the Kandy city center.
We liked the rooms (even though I've now realized the I'll never understand singalese electrical installations) and the restaurant area was very nice (inculding the actual food). The only thing about the eating experience on the negative side was the entertainment. It was the night of Poya (full moon) and perhaps the entertainment diring dinner was and extra due to that. I do not know. I did not like it all that much, but other might have. The staff was quite friendly too.
The management warns about keeping doors closed due to the monkeys. They did not bother us, but perheps we were lucky?

This is a convenient hotel but is a little strange feeling. Breakfast was good, restaurant is nice enough, room we stayed in was nicely furnished. Bathroom very old and needed renovating. Massive bare concrete corridors and bare concrete in rooms make it feel a bit cold and prison-like. Balconies should be great but there is no furniture provided so you can't sit on them. Pool area has no real seating area so can't really enjoy view there either. Glassed in bar has no atmosphere, it's in a fantastic location but the furnishings and lighting make it feel like a cheap motel bar. Compare it to the rooftop open-air bar along the road and you'll see the difference. Overall an ok place to stay which is convenient for main sights, but not somewhere you wanted to hang out.

Stayed for one night. Was pleasntly surprised by the hotel itself. Large rooms with beautiful views overlooking Kandy. Lots of monekys so keeping the doors locked is a must. Very entertaining to wake up to!!! Nice buffet dinner and bar area. Couldn't fault it.

The Thilanka is located on a hill overlooking the lake in Kandy and has spectacular views. It's just a 10 minute walk from the Temple of the Tooth Relic or a few more minutes into the centre of Kandy. (Because traffic has to go around the other side of the lake, a tuk-tuk takes longer.) Rooms are big, bathrooms fine and the staff very friendly and helpful. Monkeys are a problem - you may not be able to use your balcony and have to keep the door closed. The only complaint I have about the hotel is the huge green neon sign on top of it, which dominates the view of the hills from Kandy, not in a good way!

Stayed here on our tour of Sri Lanka for one night in room 916. Difficult to navigate getting to the room with large suitcases traveling straight from flight. We were warned about the monkeys and couldn't use the balcony and had to make sure the door was locked. Aa breakfast they become a real nuisance as other reviewers have stated.

The room had a great view of the lake it was very large but very comfortable as was the bathroom. Food was OK we tasted better on our travels, but the bakery was excellent.

A good hotel for one night with easy access to the Tooth Temple.

Room Tip: Higher floor appear better but are nearer to monkeys.
