We stayed in this hotel at the beginning of August 2014 for two nights with our two children aged 8 and 14. We thought it was very nice - quiet, beautifully appointed, friendly and attentive staff and well situated to explore Kandy

Stayed for two nights while visiting Kandy. Incredible setting perched on hilltop above the river. Lovely old house with a welcoming atmosphere. Owner and staff were very friendly and accommodating and couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast and dinner were excellent, recommend their rice and curry. Be careful not to slip over like I did if its raining as the marble is slippery. Honeymoon suite is spectacular, whole top floor with a bath on the roof terrace!

We couldn't have asked for a better first hotel in Sri Lanka. After two flights then a train journey from Colombo (definitely recommend getting the train to Kandy) the welcome was perfect. We had a tour of the hotel and then had tea on the terrace overlooking the hillside and river. The service was faultless and we appreciated having one person arrange, serve and host us throughout. The staff arranged for a driver to take us to all the attractions such as Pinnewala and tea factories and then we decided to stay for an extra night so we were able to do Dambulla and Sigirya Rock.

Always a decider is the food and needless to say it was some of the best that we sampled in Sri Lanka. Our stay marked the start of a three week trip and for us, Villa Rosa was the 'treat' place, for this reason some hotels can be a disappointment but it was completely the opposite!

This is a lovely small hotel two kilometers out of Kandy's noisy city centre on top of a very steep hill overlooking the river. The views across the river and the neighbouring hills are truly romantic. The suburb in which the hotel is situated is quiet and leafy and feels a million miles from the chaotic cacophony of the city, yet it takes next to no time to get to the heart of the action in a complimentary tuk-tuk. The hotel is very much the personal creation of its charming owner Volker Berthe whose presence is very much at the heart of things, but his staff are what make it even more special. We were in a suite of lovely generous sized rooms in the annexe which were extremely comfortable without being terribly grand. The facilities in the rooms are on the old fashioned side, but this is actually rather charming and adds to the strong feeling that you are staying in somebody's house rather than a cynically manufactured chain hotel. Breakfast was absolutely delicious The only reason I have not given this hotel five stars is that we had a slight issue with the hot water (owing I think to some rather poorly designed electrical installations), but this was quickly sorted out and did not much detract from what was a very pleasant stay.

The view from Villa Rosa is amazing, and the place is perfect for relaxing days in the middle of the nature. My husband and I stayed there only for one night and we really enjoyed it. Our room was nice and situated in the first floor with river view, although I have to say that the bed wasn't very comfortable. The staff was very kind and friendly and the food is nice and reasonably cheap. Overall it is a very special place.

The incredible vistas of the Mahaweli Ganga do dominate as the main focal point of this hotel, but it is also much more special than just the views. My husband and I stayed here for two nights and had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. Our room was a bright and spacious double on the ground floor with river views. We breakfasted both days on a beautiful table overlooking the river and were blown away by the hospitality of Volker and his team, particularly Nilanka, who looked after us expertly. Nilanka was happy to go above and beyond his role in the hotel, acting as our driver, taking us into the centre of Kandy by tuk-tuk so we could explore the Botanical Gardens and then wander around the markets with him as he did the food shopping for the hotel. It was great to walk around with a personal guide who is clearly respected and much loved by the stall holders.
The freshly purchased food was used to create amazing evening meals (we opted for the Sri Lankan set menu as opposed to the Western), at a very reasonable price of 1500 rupees per person. The kitchens are open for guests to wander freely in and watch Patrick and his team prepare the food.
The facilities (wifi, lounge, library etc.) are all easily accessible and thoughtful extras. Overall, we had a fantastic time here and cannot recommend it enough!

As all the reviews say, the views from Villa Rosa are stunning, the Sri Lankan food is delicious and the staff are really friendly.

Our first room (3) had a broken boiler so cold showers for us. The owner was extremely disinterested in our situation and delegated the problem to the staff who said they'd fix it by morning. It was a rough night as the bed wasn't very comfortable either.

The next morning the lovely staff transferred us to the honeymoon suite and that was much better. We had hot water, water pressure and a good night's sleep.

We wouldn't go back.
