Stayed a week here in February 2014 - its an old Kanyan home that has been opened up into a guest house. The rooms are large and the house itself is large, and full of bric a brac that makes it quite unique. The view from the front of the house I felt was unrivalled by many places in Kandy especially early in the mornings and it is a stones throw from the city centre. I didnt find though that the rooms were little dusty and bathrooms are in dire need of maintenance. They served some delicious home cooked rice and curry which I really enjoyed.

Castle Hill has a fabulous view over the lake and is a short walk from the centre of town. But that's it. The rooms are shabby and sparsely furnished, and the bathroom was very dirty. A washbasin tap that wobbled, no soap provided, no hot water in the morning - other guests had used it all, we were told. Well - the guesthouse has 4 guest rooms, so there should be enough hot water for at least 8 guests, shouldn't there? The shower was an inadequate dribble, so not good even when the water was hot, and the drain in the shower was clogged with other peoples’ hair. Our room had no cable TV, even though this was mentioned in the facilities available. And there was no drinking water in the room. There are insects that bite at night, though I don't think they are mosquitoes. A net was provided, but it was so dirty that we didn't fancy having it hanging over us at night. Definitely very poor value for $49.50 a night. Having travelled a lot in India, Sri Lanka and Asia, we know that this is ridiculously expensive for what was offered. We were disappointed in the extreme, as this stay was to be our "treat" on an otherwise low budget holiday.

On the plus side, though, we must say that we found the owner and staff helpful and friendly. And the breakfast was fine. With a complete refurbish - it's a great house - and an efficient cleaning team, this could be a great place to stay. But for the meantime, look elsewhere.

A wonderfull guesthouse in Art Deco style, the rooms have a lot of charms to it, the guestroom had soo much space and the living and dining room make you feel like you made a trip into the past, we enjoyed sitting in front of the house with this nice garden and the amazing view over the lake and the temple of the tooth! The owners are very friendly and helpfull and the food is great as well! It was really one of the best places we stayed in Sri Lanka!

Room Tip: The front room with a view over the lake!

We stayed in one of the tripple rooms in the front of the house, which are incredible huge and beautiful furnished in an Art Deco way. You can feel the History in this house.
Breakfast&Dinner were served in a large charming living room with Open doors to the neat garden and an absolutely overwhelming
view on Kandy&Lake!
Breakfast was good. The curry was tasty...but it felt a little akward when ordering.
We absolutely enjoyed our stay!!!

Good Points:
-quiet, only 4 rooms.
-very big rooms with mosquito nets.
-nice view of Kandy and the lake.
-cool art deco decor and living areas
Bad Points:
-breakfast not impressive. Pale eggs (on request), fruit, tea and coffee, crappy white bread.
-quite far up the hill if you don't have own transport.driver

Room Tip: Choose either of the 2 front rooms with a view.

The guesthouse has a beautiful location with a great view over kandy and the temple. It seems that the house hasnt changed much since the 30s including no warm water. But people who appreciate the retro charme should def visit the place.

This is the second time I have stayed at Castle hill the first being 6 years ago. I don't think much has changed except the price which has doubled . You stay here for the location, gardens and art deco lounge -all wonderful and the view over Kandy is stunning .The rooms are large but could do with a lick of paint and some dusting would not go amiss.Hot showers were fine. Breakfast was good eggs cooked to choice fruit etc. There is a small library .The staff were very friendly and helpful. My overriding memory is sitting on the terrace drinking tea taking in the view after a dusty squashed 6 hour bus journey from the north- BLISS.
