“Thumbs up for Castle Hill”
Reviewed 14 March 2010

Castle Hill Guest House is a place I have known of for many years but it was only on the recommendation of a friend that I finally decided to go there. The reviews on Trip Advisor were pretty mixed, so I had to see it for myself.

First thing to say is that it is a guest house not a hotel, so do not expect hotel facilities (or prices.) Second and more importantly, it has the best setting and views of the lake, across to the Temple of the Tooth of any hotel or guest house in Kandy. It is the sort of place that makes you just want to relax and write dreamy postcards about the beautiful view. As many have said, Castle Hill is an Art-Deco gem that has remained uninterfered with over the years. Yes, it is a little faded in parts, and those who want up to the minute style and swish facilities will not find it here, but for me the original condition was all part of the charm.

There are four rooms, all cavernous with ceiling fans and attached bathrooms that are clean but not modern. The best two rooms are at the front, number two having the finest view of all. These two front rooms would make three standard sized rooms elsewhere and number two has a central chandelier.

Others have commented on the dogs and the owner and I found all to be charming and friendly. Mori, the Springer Spaniel was my favourite dog, very playful and energetic. Yes, the Sausage Dogs did bark if someone came up to the house but not for long. Ayoni, the owner, is a lovely lady, once you take the trouble to get to know her. She will happily talk to you about the history of the house and is very knowledgeable about Kandy and the surrounding district. She is also very helpful, if you need it. Whilst I was there she went to great lengths to help out a couple who wanted to go earlier to their next destination and were trying to change their hotel booking.

Only had breakfast whilst there – quite adequate: fruit, eggs masses of toast, butter/marmalade/jam and the dining area is in the main central hall of the house under another huge chandelier.

I liked it, so much so that, after my first stay, I booked to go back again for another couple of nights. Will certainly stay again on my next visit to Kandy.

There are only 4 rooms in this antique villa. Each room is more or less same and spacious. I like their old furnitures. The hostess is warm and prepared good breakfast. Although the breakfast charges 400 LKR/person, kinda expensive by comparison to the local consumption but it is worth to have this breakfast joy in the antique atmosphere.

Castle Hill must have one of the best views in Kandy and this is one of it's main strengths. Equally, if you want to experience staying in a house from the start of last century then this offers a great experience with much of the funiture from this period, and the art deco style of the house fully retained. And you could not fault the service from the two young lads which was very good indeed, they could not do enough for us (where they were empowered to).

The reason for the average score is that looking at the place objectively there were some flaws with had a big impact on our experience:
- the place needs refurbishing, the bathroom is not original and it's simply tired, however well scrubbed it is, it's just past it's sell-by date. The bedroom fixtures and fitting need replacing. Equally, the ants walking across the bathroom and bedroom needed sorting - they weren't from the 1920's.
- the landlady needs to learn about offering hospitality - the place wasn't busy and whilst the two lads were very good, it was strange not to have any interaction from the "host". Felt like we were paying (good) money, and there wasn't much other interest. Every other place we stayed in Sri Lanka left us with the feeling that nothing was too much trouble, and indeed in any good B&B or hotel this is the case, but we were left feeling cold towards the owner.
- with a great view and good weather, why wouldn't you serve breakfast on the terrace? The small thoughtful touches we missing.

Castle Hill is a beautiful Art Deco house overlooking Kandy lake. The house is like a time warp, with everything seemingly un-touched since the 30s.

The house staff are very helpful and charming, offering advice, great service and smiles any time of day. At 3800 rupees (about £22) including breakfast, the guest house offers reasonable value for money, but not great.

A couple of things that might indicate the grasping nature of the owner:

-That welcome drink you receive when you arrive? That appears on your bill when you leave. Thanks!

-That collection from the bus station (3 minutes away).Yep, that's on there too.

-Want to use the washing machine to wash those clothes of yours, you're willing to pay of course. Nope, each item will be charged individually, making a washload come in at $20. Thanks for that warm home feeling!

Towels, and bathrooms extremely tired and dated. Yeah yeah, it's very quaint and all that, but for christ's sake, spend some of your profits on facilities.

It might also interest visitors to Sri Lanka to know that house staff etc, receive on average about $100 - 130 per month, which makes the £20+ you're paying seem expensive.

On the whole, a great spot and interesting stay, but another example of Sri Lanka's two tier society, third world wages and facilities on one level and first world prices on the other.

wonderful quiet location out of the hustle and bustle of Kandy but walking distance to everything. Views over the town and lake are brilliant. Massive rooms which looked unchanged since the 1930's.

Watch the fruit bats at sunset but use insect repellant.

Highly recommended

Just returned from a fanastic honeymoon spent in Sri Lanka and Maldives. During our first week in Sri Lanka we spent 2 nights at the Castle Hill Guest House and loved every minute of it.

The owner is lovely - very welcoming and friendly and happy to chat to you about what to see and do in the Kandy area.

Up until arriving at Castle Hill, I had been suffering from severe morning sickness, being sick 6/7 times a day. However during my stay at Castle Hill, I wasn't sick once. The owner and her cook went out of their way to look after me and make sure that I wasn't given any food that would agitate my stomach and genuinely cared about how I was feeling.

The property itself overlooks the most amazing gardens with a spectacular view of Kandy below. It is a huge old, art deco villa with 4 large spacious rooms, though the two rooms at the front are slightly nicer that the back rooms.

Food is amazing and I would definitely recommend taking your evening meal in the guesthouse - you'll struggle to get a better meal in Kandy!
