“Excellent place to stay”
Reviewed 31 March 2013

This hotel was extremely well maintained and very clean. The (included) breakfasts were lovely. We didnt eat in the restaurant as the price of the buffet was a little pricey compared to other places in Sri Lanka which put us off going in. However the food always looked lovely and the restaurant was full (which is a good sign). The hotel does have a laundry service, however it was very expensive compared to other places in Sri Lanka, so worth waiting to wash your stuff if you can.

This was an interesting place. The room we stayed in had a great view of the lake, was impeccably clean, comfortable mattresses and a good mosquito net. However, this being said I think that Sharon Inn, like a few other places to stay in Sri Lanka, have used their good review in Lonely Planet to hike the prices up A LOT. When I called to book we agreed on a price, however, when we arrived we were told this room was no longer available and if we wanted to stay the next available room was an extra 600 rupees a night. All of this whilst being given a lecture on the untrustworthiness of some travellers not staying for the agreed number of nights. There were also a lot of rules, with one couple leaving because the woman was caught washing a shirt in the sink and was roused on. The dinner banquet is delicious, but beware that the price indicated in guide books is no longer accurate.

All in all, a good place to stay with great food but prices have risen considerably even compared to hotels on the same street.

Room Tip: Our room facing the lake, number 5 I think, had plush mattresses.

We stayed at Sharon Inn in February for 4 nights and found our hosts Sue and Faiez helpful, warm and honest. Happily prepared to sit and chat and share their knowledge and experiences, which extended one of our breakfasts till lunchtime! Our room (No 5) was basic and very clean with all the requirements you look for in a guest house. However it is worth saying that this was the most comfortable bed we slept in with lovely pillows in our 2 week holiday, out of all of our 5 accommodation choices. We had organised all our own excursions which did not seem to upset our hosts, indeed they added their own information to enable us to make them better. We ate here 3 out of our 4 nights as we enjoyed the food so much, and yes a little more expensive than the guidebooks suggest however they were published a little while ago so are not real time! We did email ahead and reserve our room which is required as saw many people disappointed as turned away, and do book ahead if you hope to try their buffet dinner as they cater for the number of diners.

Room Tip: Room 5 has a balcony and whilst not the best view of the town as surrounded by tree tops, it did obs...

Easy to communicate with local owner and his European wife when making reservation.

The hotel is perched on a hill among many other hotels on the other side of the lake as compared to downtown and Buddha Tooth Temple. Allow 20-30 min walk or use tuktuk.

Rooms are spacious and clean and security seems good. My room was a bit expensive considering a non en-suite bathroom but the bed was the most comfortable I've slept in in all of Sri Lanka, really!

Breakfast was included and WiFi OK.

I only stayed one night and ate downtown. When I returned to Sharon Inn their restaurant was maximum crowded. Had I stayed one night more I would have dined there.

Kandy in itself is a bit overrated in my view. I think two full days are enough and I receommend going to a kandyan dance performance (they're on daily).

Yes, the room was very nice, the food excellent, everything absolutely clean - top marks for that! BUT: the owners are anything but welcoming, they are only interested in money and watch carefully that the guests stick to their many rules. When calling to make a reservation, we were first shouted at that we ought to come, he didn't like empty rooms. Upon arrival, we were recited all rules that we were to follow. We had organised a tuktuk driver ourselves, a very honest, gentle young man. The owners wife was very cold and impolite towards him when we picked us up, because they have their own tuktuk ( money!). However, the highlight of our stay in kandy was said tuktuk driver who invited us to his home for a delicious curry and a wonderful time with his family :) all in all, sharon inn felt like an excursion to germany - efficient, clean, rigid! Not recommendable!

Nice comfy mattresses and rooms are very clean which is a relief when you are in a tropical country. Dinner is very special so do not miss it. As my tittle says, after spending a day running around Kandy, is so nice to go back to a fantastic buffet cooked just as your mama would cook it! thank you guys

My boyfriend and I stayed at Sharon Inn for four nights in mid-February - we originally booked for two nights, but we liked Kandy and the company of Sue and Faisz so much that we ended up extending our trip. At the end of our holiday we both agreed that Sharon Inn had been our favourite place to stay, which was mostly down to our room (a great view over Kandy from our balcony in room number 7), Sue's awesome cooking and the fact that by the end of our stay we felt pretty much at home and were very sad to leave!

Sue and Faisz were really helpful in arranging laundry, trips to Sigiriya and Ella and giving general advice. They're both lovely, warm people who we were really glad to have met. They've been running their gusethouse for 30 years and they're certainly doing it right!

We had the buffet dinner twice which is 1100 rupees each - more than is quoted in the outdated Lonely Planet but definitely worth it, it was the best food we had in our two weeks in Sri Lanka. We meant to ask Sue for the recipe for the aubergine dish but forgot! Sitting outside in the garden with our food and a beer, by candlelight under the stars, felt pretty romantic. You can book to come for dinner if you're not staying here, which I'd recommend to anyone staying in Kandy, as the culinary choices in the city are pretty limited at present.

There are undoubtedly cheaper places to stay in Kandy, but you get what you pay for and we were really pleased we chose Sharon Inn. The local knowledge of Faisz and Sue and the friendly atmosphere of this place makes it a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Rooms 5, 7 and 9 have balconies with views overlooking Kandy. The higher ones are a bit of a climb u...
