Very friendly and welcoming family! The rooms are nice and simple, the breakfasts are good and the family can help you plan your trip! This place feels like home and offers good prices... Dont believe the tuktuk stories about this place, who try to lure you somewhere else where they do get provision!

Stayed here for 2 nights, you re welcomed by a warm and very friendly family. The room is spacious and comfortable, hot shower, mosquito net etc. Wifi is freely accessible. Food which is served as a buffet is tasty! Great place!

We were a little anxious coming into our first homestay hotel with our 5yr old daughter at the beginning of our trip, but Sarath and his family were brilliant hosts, making us feel very welcome right from the first phone call through a 5-night-stay! To get to our room, we quite literally had to walk through their living room and had breakfast and dinner (oh, dinner!!) on their terrace, but Sarath and family pull off the perfect feat: always there, always attentive and helpful without ever being obtrusive or pushy. Very, very good English is spoken, and Sarath clearly knows a huge amount about Sri Lanka and is a great help without pushing business on you!
Our room on the 2nd floor was spacious and absolutely spotless with a pretty posh bathroom and a nice balcony.
Two things really, REALLY stood out, though:
Mrs. Sarath has done an amazing thing with her small garden, growing seemingly every imaginable fruit, spice and herb there and still leaving enough space for our daughter to run around in. A tour around the couple of square meters can easily take an hour as she explains what all those plants are good for!
And the food!!! We had a lot of great meals in S.L., but Freedom Lodge set the standard! Dinner has to be ordered in advance during the day, and it's absolutely fantastic!!! Best food of the whole trip!
All in all, pretty much a perfect place for a budget hotel!!

We rang on our train journey and were quoted 20,000 rupees, however when we arrived we were were given the choice of the 2 most expensive rooms (30,000 rupees and 25,000 rupees) - these were the Penthouse suite and another large room. When we looked at the room we were ecstatic - even though we were travelling on a budget the room was a real bargain and well worth paying a little more than we had planned. Absolutely double huge room with a private balcony and large ensuite. We ended up staying an extra night as we were so impressed! The only thing we can't comment on was food - we arrived fairly late on the first night and were told they may be able to accommodate us, however it turned out they couldn't so we went elsewhere (a tiny basic restaurant 1 minute up the hill - very nice!) we also believed breakfast was included but it wasn't offered to us at any stage. Really friendly family run place.

Room Tip: Penthouse Suite - great choice!

Sarath is an absolute gentleman and a magnificent host. We booked the penthouse suite and had a lovely night time view of the temple of the tooth from our private balcony. Would heartily recommend the freedom lodge.

Freedom is a comfortable stay with a very lovely family willing to assist with any request. The room aren't flashy but really comfortable. The breakfasts are great. The location is good and would recommend staying here while in Kandy. I would not give Kandy more than 1-2 days stay - much nicer places in Sri Lanka!!
