“Beautiful setting”
Reviewed 5 April 2011

We really liked this Hotel. We were fortunate to get a room witha view over the river and the room was decorated really well. Lovely tapestry swag above the bed. Service and food good too.
If you get the chance visit the Ayurveda Spa just down teh road for a massage...the steam room is certainly an experience but authentic! Address no 51,Srimath Kudarathwaththa Mw,Kandy. Tel 0094812213755.
If you want to know any more then please ask me. It was a good base for in and around Kandy but we only had 2 nights.

Thank you for your review, Chaaya Citadel Kandy is bordered by Sri Lanka's largest river, the serene 'Mahaveli'. Ensuring scenic views of the lush green surroundings. We hope to see you again for a longer stay.

We had a great stay at the Citadel Hotel. The location at the river is beautiful and found the Deluxe rooms great.
Breakfast and dinner where also very good.

Firstly the setting. Gorgeous riverside location opposite forest which gives a real sense of seclusion and a mild feeling of adventure - being out in the wilds etc etc. The dining area, communal spaces and rooms all have a relaxing view of the river and forest - ideal. The bar area is nice and spacious with reasonable entertainment laid on in the evening.

The dining area is huge - and the hotel would appear to be pitched at mass tour groups. Despite this the food manages to be of a very good standard - individually cooked steaks for example. Really impressed with the quality of the food. However when the tour groups descend (and no disrespect to tour groups) the dining area is incredibly busy - quite long and confusing queues form and it all gets very hot and confusing. Bit school dinners at time - quite annoying. A real negative.

Possibly related to this is the general attitude of the staff in the restauraunt. Compared with the other 4 or 5 Hotels we used in Sri Lanka the waiting staff were by far the most surly. Not even a pretense of a welcoming attitude from the guys who wait the tables. Further annoyance when at 7am a porter repeatedly banged on our door to take our luggage. We wern't going anywhere for 3 days and were having a lie in ! When I politley pointed out we wern't going he just looked dissapointed at not getting a tip. No apology for possibly an honest mistake. Again dissapointing.

However the rooms are quite comfortable, the TV has a good range of stations, everything works (Safe, water, tv etc etc).

So in summary a Hotel with wonderfull location and infrastructure, really good food which is let down by a poor attitude by a minority of the staff

Thank you for your comments on our resort. We are really disheartened at the inconvenience you had face. It would appear there are a few service staff including the porter, who need to be coached properly in doing their task as well as to ensure that they support the correct attitude; and our training department will approach this.

Stayed here for two nights while touring Sri Lanka with Hayes & Jarvis (via Aitken Spence). Very nice hotel, excellent room, clean and tidy. Lot's of attention from the staff . Food good (compared to some buffets that we have had). My only minor gripe, as a non-smoker, is that the arrangement of seating in the bar area tends to cause all the cigarette smoye to accumulate in the upper bar area.
This hotel is NOT close to the centre of Kandy, so you'll need a tuk-tuk / taxi / driver to take you into the town if you wish to see the temple.
Nice gardens below the hotel, bordering the Mahaweli river, though I'd recommend some heavy duty deet if you spend any time down there.

We stayed for one night whilst visiting the sights around Kandy. The room was nice enough and we had a good view of the river and surrounding gardens and jungle. The bar and reception areas were well kept and staffed even though the live music made me think I had walked into a 50s gangster movie.

Unfortunately, the other facilities just did not meet the size of the hotel. The pool is relatively small and sun beds few, although we didn't really require them for such a short stay. The restaurant seating area is huge but the buffet section is small and it became like school dinners, lining up waiting to get some grub. We got the impression restuarant staff really didn't want to be there... Not what you want!

All in all, it was satisfactory for a short stay but I would look elsewhere for future stays in Kandy
