The hotel is in a beautiful setting overlooking a river, set in the jungle. The room was smallish but clean and comfortable although could do with a little attention to improve the standard. Tea and coffeee making facilities in room. Bathroom okay with hairdryer, shampoo plus shower gel. Food good with nice light and airy restaurant. Apparently the hotel is being refurbished in a couple of months.

The hotel could need a renovation, the rooms are spacious but the furnitures and the interior design dates back to the early eighties. I just stayed there because all the other hotels were fully booked. And one warning the city (Kandy) is dead from around 2200 on. (I suppose for religious reasons) I tried to get some decent food (incl. in the hotel) around this time (late arrival) and it was impossible. At the I had to eat (last thing open) in a Kentucky Fried Chicken ouf.

The Chaaya Citadel is a big hotel that tourist buses and cars use as a base. During the day you think it is empty but at night it is full when everyone comes back from their tours.
It fits the bill. The rooms were big and well appointed. The views are good and the service very good in line with what you expect in Sri Lanka.
The evening meal is a buffet that it huge. However, they don't always do western food well - the meat was tough. But there are lots of options for all tastes.

Having read other reviews on Tripadvisor this hotel delivered exactly what we expected. The majority of guests were on tour buses but as independent travellers we felt well catered for. Our room (308) was quite a walk from the main restaurant and pool area but we liked the fact that it was quiet there. We were on the ground floor and unfortunately the view was screened by trees, so if the view is important ask for a room on a higher floor. We only stayed 2 nights and were out sightseeing all day so this was not a huge problem for us.
The room was quite large with a seating area and terrace with 2 chairs. Unlike other reviewers we thought the black bathroom was ok and was very clean. The bathrooms in our corridor had a large air brick/grid so that anyone in the corridor could hear everything!
The buffet was varied and even the fussiest eater would find something they liked. There was a mixture of buffet and cooked to order options and each evening there was always the option of Sri Lankan curry dishes. The dining room did get busy but we easily got a table each evening.
Internet access is available and advertised as a cyber cafe. This is actually the use of a laptop in reception! The cost is RS200 for 15 minutes. Check in and out were both hassle free as you would expect for a hotel dealing with a high turnover.
Overall an ok stay which was good value for money.

Room Tip: If you want a view ask for a room on a higher floor.

This was our 3rd hotel in Sri Lanka and was a good hotel choice. The view of the river is nice and there did seem to be lots of mosquitos and we did get bit despite spraying. The bathroom was dark decor and was disappointing at first but it was fine. The restuarant was good service and standard and choice of food. Again this hotel did have some large groups of tour guests but this didn't spoil it for us.

The hotel was due to close end of April for refurbishment and this was the reason given for all the special offer and lower price wines not being available- cheapest red wa £25 so we didn't bother.

We booked a spa session at the hotel which was £24 each and lasted 1.5 hours. we had head & full body massage, followed by a steam bath and then a warm bath which was full of natural oils and herbs ( it was brown in colour). We did feel better after this as had aching legs after lots of climbing steps sight seeing,
Would recommend staying here.

We had stayed here 3 years ago and this stay was for one night but only a couple of days before the hotel was shutting for a major refurbishment. We were concerned this might affect our stay but the staff and food were as good as last time and the hotel was still fairly busy. The pool was looking a little dated and it would be a stunning location for an infinity pool so I hope this is included in the makeover! Do stay in the garden until dusk to watch the fruit bats flying down the river to their feeding grounds (there didn't seem to be so many this time but still worth seeing)
