“Relaxing Find”
Reviewed 23 March 2014 via mobile

Lovely location, tranquil and relaxing. Sitting in the lounge having a sundowner was a great way to spend a few hours after sight seeing. The arak cocktails most enjoyable.

The entrance/ reception beautiful with lovely wall hangings.

The breakfast deck was a great place to start the day. And the breakfast delicious and varied.

A theme with this hotel chain ... the bathroom could have done with a refurb. The shower and sink needed attention whilst we were there, and the water pressure poor.

We stayed 2 nights and had good rooms on the ground floor which meant we could easily wander out and walk along the river, appreciating the view of trees, flowers, and occasional wildlife. We enjoyed sitting in the bar admiring the view while sipping beer and cocktails! Be aware that it is outside Kandy so it was not very easy to get to see the city itself. The only thing I would criticise (as in other Cinnamon hotels we visited) is the hopeless entertainment, which was a form of karaoke with a singer accompanied by electronic music, murdering various well known Western songs. Recorded music would be preferable if you want that type of music, but isn't there any traditional Sinhalese music we could hear? If you are British or Commonwealth do visit the local Commonwealth war cemetery which is on the road to Kandy and is beautifully kept with graves of soldiers of many nationalities, from World War 2.

It was a very very quiet Sunday lunch time in the huge dining room of this hotel.

Staff are friendly and helpful but due to the lack of clients not quite the standard I am used to from the Cinnamon Group.

It was a buffet lunch, not the choice at the Cinnamon Grand but very good non the less. The quality of the food preparation is obvious and with choice of smoked duck and chicken terraine on the salad buffet, excellent. Roast leg of lamb, almost unheard of in Sri Lanka, a little dry from the warming lamp and that was served instead of slicing it off and offering the succulent meat underneath my companion got was very very good as a treat. Not the true taste of lamb but the meat was a great texture and well cooked but still juicy.

The rest of the buffet is excellent, shame there were no other clients to enjoy it. Must be very depressing for the kitchen who had obviously worked to the normal Cinnamon standards to have all that food and work go to waste.

The indulgence section of desserts was obviously normally very popular given the very wide choice. The few I tasted were again excellent.

Including all the taxes and service the buffet is around 2000 rupee a head, excellent value.

Not big on atmosphere, great ti find some where decent to eat in Kandy at a reasonable price you feel you are getting value for money.

The views over looking the pool and river are a great back drop for a less than inspired dining room .

We stayed here for 2 nights as we were on a tour of Sri Lanka but this was one of our favorite hotels of the tour, the reason was the setting all the rooms have a balcony and river view and the hotels bar and terrace just look over the river and it is wonderful. The birds that you see are great, we did a river cruise and we saw so many different birds. The staff were lovely the rooms were large the food was good also we like the restaurant as it was buffet style but there was a cold room where the starters and sweets were and they were kept cold. There was outside dining available too. Great time thank you.

We stayed for two nights during the course of our holiday. From talking with other guests who had stayed at the hotel over many years the hotel itself has been refurbished and renamed. It is quite impressive how the bar and lounge area opens out to the swimming pool with view of the river and the gardens are well kept. We had a room overlooking river. The room was spacious and comfortable with a veranda. There was no noise from the restaurant underneath. The room was cleaned daily and the bathroom whilst having no natural light was also well equipped. Breakfast was a buffet with so much choice that it became difficult to know what to choose, but I did my best! Service was efficient and friendly. We ate one night in the pool side a la carte restaurant where once again the service was friendly efficient and good. The food was very good. It was a shame that the restaurant wasn't busier as it was not expensive. We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It was a good base in Kandy. If you are taking the train or simply just moving on then you can order a packed lunch which is good value for a fiver tho how chicken drumsticks can be included in a vegetarian meal box still remains to be seen! Still I managed to polish them off! All in all a comfortable and relaxing stay.

The hotel is a little way out of the centre of Kandy which is a 10 minute taxi/tuk-tuk ride away. It is however delightfully located overlooking a river where there lots of birds and wild-life to be spotted. The bar/eating areas and restaurant are very pleasant and there is a nice pool on a terrace below the reception area (although I don't remember it being supervised). Our room, one floor down from reception, was quite spacious and well equipped and had a balcony overlooking the river. The buffet food we had (we were on an organised tour) was very good and tasty but not quite up to the standard we'd experienced in a couple of other hotels. We found service to be a bit hit and miss and generally rather slow and staff do seem to get in a bit of a muddle at times over who wants what and what is required. They were however all very pleasant. Overall it was very good but perhaps not the best value for money in the area.
