Stayed here for two nights while touring Sri Lanka with Hayes & Jarvis (via Aitken Spence). Very nice hotel, excellent room, clean and tidy. Lot's of attention from the staff . Food good (compared to some buffets that we have had). My only minor gripe, as a non-smoker, is that the arrangement of seating in the bar area tends to cause all the cigarette smoye to accumulate in the upper bar area.
This hotel is NOT close to the centre of Kandy, so you'll need a tuk-tuk / taxi / driver to take you into the town if you wish to see the temple.
Nice gardens below the hotel, bordering the Mahaweli river, though I'd recommend some heavy duty deet if you spend any time down there.

We stayed for one night whilst visiting the sights around Kandy. The room was nice enough and we had a good view of the river and surrounding gardens and jungle. The bar and reception areas were well kept and staffed even though the live music made me think I had walked into a 50s gangster movie.

Unfortunately, the other facilities just did not meet the size of the hotel. The pool is relatively small and sun beds few, although we didn't really require them for such a short stay. The restaurant seating area is huge but the buffet section is small and it became like school dinners, lining up waiting to get some grub. We got the impression restuarant staff really didn't want to be there... Not what you want!

All in all, it was satisfactory for a short stay but I would look elsewhere for future stays in Kandy

Because of floods occurring in the Habarana region, we paid £100 more on top of the initial cost that we paid to Kuoni to get out and come to this planned hotel a night earlier than expected. I'm not sure whether staying in the flooded areas would have actaully been a better idea.

The first night of the stay was in room 236, I'll repeat that, room 236. See photo's for more proof later. All I can say is, this is one of the worst hotel's I have ever stayed in. Rooms in Thailand for £12 a night were significanlty better than this.

Personally, I feel whoever graded this hotel as a 4* must have been bribed to do so and if a Kuoni representative has inspected the level of the hotel in recent months, they need to be fired for allowing guests to continue staying there.

As soon as we walked down the corridor on the lower second floor to the room, all you can smell is the odour of damp. Inside room 236, there was water dripping through the ceiling in several places, that begged belief., in repspect to this establishment charging £100 a night. The following day we were moved to room 279 that was significantly better but still, verging on the awful side.

The bar was reasonable and the only thing that I can say that was nice about the hotel was the pool and the gardens that sided the river. Just a shame they don't look after the guest paying rooms as much as they do the gardens.

I think this hotel must have some serious structural problems with respect to water leakage and the rooms and value for money are diabolical. In a letter of complaint to Kuoni, I have suggested that the hotel should be charging me to stay in this hotel and not the other way around. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone, least of all my friends.

Oh and the hotel is 4km away from Kandy, so you will need to drive there.

In one word: Horrendous.

We stayed at Chaaya Citadel 2 nights from January 29-31 and had a good experience. The rooms are spacy and well decorated. The location of the hotel is outside the city but this is only a plus as it is located beautifully on a riverside. Service and food was also very good.

I cannot believe that anyone could say one bad thing about this hotel. I stayed in 5 hotels during a recent tour of Sri Lanka and it is hard to choose which was my favourite, as all but one, which was dire, were outstanding. However where the Chaaya Citadel exceeded was the stunning location and the lovely staff. I will never forget the wonderful view from the room over the gardens and river, it was a joy to get up early and have a cup of tea savouring that view. It really is a haven of tranquility. The grounds are beautiful and there are so many areas to sit and relax. The bedroom was very large with plenty of seating and an excellent bathroom with large walk in shower. Food was buffet style with very good choice.
