This is one of the real highlights of the World Heritage Site and should not be missed. It has been placed under cover for protection from the elements. It is still used as a place of worship by locals and foreigners alike who bring offerings for the gods.

An enormous site of tribute to Buddha, featuring 3 differing poses on a grand scale. A religious site, so entry requires the usual shoe removal etc. Definitely worth a visit when in this area.

Whilst you'll see lots of statues of Buddha throughout a trip around Sri Lanka, you'll be very hard pushed to find any more impressive than these figures at Gal Vihara. They are simply magnificent. DO NOT MISS THEM.

A short walk down a path opens up to a massive rock. This tock had been carved out to represent three buddhas, the meditative, the teaching and the reclining Buddha. Very impressive. If you want to go inside, one must be dressed appropriately and take off your shoes. Loved it.
