“An absolute gem”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

Run by a lovely couple, helpful and friendly, the guesthouse is in a quiet area. Each room has an outdoor seating area. Some rooms look out over the rice fields, as does the eating area. The rooms are comfortable, a good size, nice big clean bathrooms with hot water. There are many places to sit outside. The food portions are huge and delicious. They can arrange tours etc, bicycle hire and it' a 300 rupee tuk tuk ride from the station. Walking distance to the museum. They also have "special items" available to quench your thirst! A great place to stay.

We stayed at Thisara Guesthouse for one night. The rate for an A/C room was 3000 R which was totally adequate. The room was clean and equipped with a mosquito net and a quite large bed. Considering the options you have in Polonnaruwa this place is probably the best you can choose. They rent out bycycles (300R per day) which are in good shape. Moreover, the staff is very helpful. All in all we recommend this place.

This is a good budget accommodation for Polonnaruwa. The family that runs it are a younger, friendly bunch who care about your comfort. Even their dogs are friendly. Beautiful view in the sitting and eating areas. It's beside a rice field, so the bugs are kind of heavy. Wear bug spray to dinner and sleep under the mosquito net and you'll be fine. I didn't find the bed very comfortable - kind of short and hard - but, I'm a bigger guy. My wife found it to be just fine. Try to get a room closer to the main office if possible, as the wifi signal isn't that strong toward the back of the building. The food is good here, too, and they give you A LOT. If you need to arrange for a car, the owner's friend is a pretty chill guy who will take you where you want to go and not pressure you into detours in the interest of taking more of your money.

Room Tip: Wi-Fi signal is weak at the back of the building.

Stayed 3 nights end of may in one of the simple but clean room without air-con, ground floor, with garden and beautiful view over the rice field. Good value for the price with very good WIFI.The food is also very good and the owner very friendly: he even invited me for juice and cake for his daughter's birthday. The guesthouse is a few hundreds meters in the southern road of the old city, after the clock tower. It is very close to this road, which is convenient to visit the surrounding, but quiet without the hassle bustle of the traffic. They also rent push bike. I recommend it and would go back again.

As we didn't want to stay in a hotel in Polonnoruwa we found this place through trip advisor.
When we arrived the welcome was very friendly, we got nice refreshing towels and the people are warm and friendly.
We were surprised as the place is pretty big, it has 10 rooms and we were the only guests.
The room is clean has airco and a fan so you can choose (or both) as it's very warm in Polonnoruwa.
You can rent bikes or a scooter here and we rented two very good bikes and made a nice trip to the ancient city... Only 10-15 min by bike so easy to do (do it early with those temperatures).
The food is really great here, very nice breakfast but the dinner is the best. Try the develled chicken, we loved it :)
Normally we prefer smaller more cosy places but I think this is the best you can get in Polonnoruwa

Rooms are ok, they have mosquito nets, basic bathroom. Good thing is that they have a place where you can sit in the evening and relax. They rent bikes. If it is raining, a lot of mosquito-like flying bugs appear, but they didn't bite. Very friendly family!
