“Great mid range hotel”
Reviewed 15 August 2014

I really enjoyed this lovely hotel. The staff are fantastic, particularly the bar/restaurant staff and the manager Nayani. Rooms are spacious, the beds could be a bit more softer. Overall this is a great base to explore the Polonnaruwa ancient sites.

We spent a comfortable two days at Sudu Araliya. The location is beautiful overlooking the famed Parakrama Samudraya. There is quite a large pool. They have some issues due to the jungle terrain such as bee hives on trees directly above the pool in the night which necessitates switching off pool lights a bit. However that is a minor isssue. The rooms are excellent. The toilets could be a bit roomier. But they are new and clean. The humidifier fans fixed on the roofs of the toilets are either inadequate or sinks need to be closed as there is a bad odour at times. Also the toilet roofs carry conversations clearly from the room opposite to yours which was a bit unnerving. The domestic staff as well as restaurant and others are excellent. Special thanks to Ms Nayani the Manager who went out of her way to make us feel welcome. The food is adequate and the spread is reasonable. Desserts a bit unimaginative but adequate. This is a good mid level hotel.

It was off season. Great food. Attentive staff. Only problem was the flies from the lake. If you are not prepared for the attack of the flies. You will get a shock of your life. Once you get over the flies. You'll be able to enjoy the great food and service the hotel provide once you get rid of the flies from your room you'd be able to enjoy the specious bed rooms over looking the calm peaceful lake.

Food is horrible. The worst and least worthy place for your money. They do not have any buffet for dinner. What they have is just a cheap set menu sold for exceeding high price which does not worth 50 percent of its price. 1400 slr....
In addition the tables are fully surrounded by a kind of flies wich freely fall to the plates and food all over the table from the lights above. Staff think that this is normal and flies are part of the meal. We asked to change the table for us but they refused.
Never ever go there.

Thank you for taking the time to review us. We apologize for the unsatisfactory incident that happened during your dinner and to learn the hotel did not meet with your expectations; we have noted your comments and taking necessary measures to mitigate the re occurrence and seek your kind understanding of the same.

While thanking you for sharing your feedback we do wish bring to your kind attention that we serve set menus as necessary by the Hotel management and do charger a five course dinner @ Rs.1,400/- net inclusive 22% taxers. We do have few lake flies during the dry season for a short period of time and follow intense pest control system and procedures in controlling & eliminating pest, I do apologies if the staff did not offer you a better table and will take stern action if found to be, I am certain are friendly courteous staff would not use the phrase; flies a part of the meal.

It would be very appropriate if you may have notified the management so as to correct and rectify your concerns if found to be a valid.

Please do not hesitate to contact myself on your next visit.

Yours sincerely,

General Manager

I visited this Hotel out of season and I had been served like a king. All the staff showed a pleasure to make my stay a success. Even I could have served the dinner and the breakfast in the wonderful garden. As no many other tourists where there, many birds walked and flight around and it was the best spot for making pictures of storks, herons, etc.
My advice for the tourists: go out of season and you will be the king of Polonaruva!

Room Tip: Take a room overlooking the Lake.

Sudu Araliya Hotel (P) was one of our 2 day stops travelling through Sri Lanka & we found alike other locations there was no difference here, compared to the Galle Face Hotel (C) & the Palm Gardens Hotel (A) the assistance & friendliness shown by all of the team, this was carried on to Kandy Cinnamon Citadel & St Andrews Nuwera Eliya & Kerchyien Bungalow in Bandarawella. We were treated very well & can't complain about all of the staff & locations also maintenance of the rooms, there were notices in most rooms to keep the windows & doors closed due to insects & following these instructions we had no problems. We are going back in November 2015.

This is a great location near the archeological site but I wouldn't recommend it. Our experience: We checked in, unpacked and headed for the shower only to discover no hot water. Housekeeping responded quickly, fixed the problem in about a half hour. We noticed many mosquitoes when we checked in but glanced up at our room ceiling were shocked to see literally hundreds more. Called housekeeping again. They offered to spray the room but we requested another room. 2nd room: the air conditioner was loud and rickety. Off go our bags to room #3 which had two single beds pushed together, not the double room we booked. Honestly, we rarely complain about things during travel. But this was a bit much. Checking out, the safe deposit box battery stopped so we couldn't retrieve our valuables. I must say, the staff responded immediately to each issue which we appreciated. Not a word from management about all these fiascoes... A little training on room preparation and a check list for housekeeping would help here.

Breakfast was fresh and flavorful. Dinners (we had 2) were very average and the staff were very unorganized. The front desk staff were very welcoming with warm smiles and quick check in and out. Sadly this didn't make up for all the minuses.

We booked through Agoda (dont do it!) and I feel the hotels pass off the lesser-used rooms with less desirable view and amenities through Agoda.

Little annoyance: the hotel requires a new Internet user/password EVERY day...
