We loved our stay. Rooms were lovely, clean and very tastefully designed and furnished, with wonderful outdoor showers, comfortable and clean beds, and a small library of interesting books in each room. The food was good, but trying a bit too hard to do European cuisine (and not always that well), and we thought there should be more of a Sri lankan alternative, which they would be better at. (The place is a bit tricky to get to, and you need a driver, or good map-GPS, but worth it.) Great view from restaurant. Service was great, and they gave us a free bottle of wine on our third dinner there.

the most recent is my fourth stay at this beautiful nature resort. I would wholeheartedly name Wildgrass as one of my favorite getaways in Sri Lanka. From the courteous service to well appointed chalets, wildgrass has always met our expectations well and beyond.

Tissa is a brilliant head chef/manager who will attend to your needs at the resort and Jackie is wonderful at handling the reservations. cheers to both of you for doing such a great job!

I have always loved nature based non-mainstream hotels, but there have been many occasions where some hotels have fallen short of the 'luxury' and 'service' factors. However, I can confidently say that Wildgrass is at the top of their game. Yes, you will be in the middle of nowhere surrounded by the untouched wilderness but of course you will be pampered with luxury bedding, cable connected LCD, premium furniture/lighting and scrumptious food. The staff are well trained and respect your privacy at all times.

Looking forward to many future stays,

Tharindu W

Room Tip: the Chalets are connected only by walkways and if available, I always ask for the nearest one to the main reception/restaurant.

shower with a froggy friend was splendid.
The manager was a lovely gentleman and all the staff were attentive and friendly. They made a lovely effort with Charlotte who is 10.
The food was great and plentiful, the rooms were very thoroughly cleaned. It was a good base to get to many of the near by attractions.
We spent new year there and they made such a wonderful effort.
In short we loved it and will be back.
Thanks again. Christie, Hywel and Charlotte

The first thing to say is that we were unlucky with the weather - it rained solidly, which may have marred our overall impression, and meant that we couldn't 'do' as much as we otherwise would.

Firstly, about the chalets. They are pretty amazing. Big, timber-constructed chalets with huge windows and quite a few mod-cons. Ground floor had a bathroom, an outdoor shower, and a spacious living room. The first floor was a large bedroom, looking out towards a marshy lake. Very impressive. The bedroom also had a flatscreen tv and DVD player. We did have problems with the power, as the generator cut out on our first night, which killed the air conditioning (and everything else). Apparently I could have phoned reception to get it fixed, but we didn't bother. In retrospect, we should have...it was boiling! They are not however 'animal proof', so again, if you are squeamish about the great outdoors, be on your guard! We had a prehistoric-sized spider (I thought it was a type of crab) on our bathroom wall, which, unfortunately, had to meet an untimely end. I have since learned that it was a 'tailless whip scorpion' - which, for an arachnophobe like me, the stuff of nightmares! We also had some frogs which took refuge on the wall behind our bedroom, (so loud I needed earplugs), and oh yes, the gecko which took refuge on our bedroom fan, and shed its tail (poor thing) when I turned on the fan one morning! However, no big deal - this is rural Sri Lanka, so all to be expected.

The food was...not quite as good as it could have been. Nearly excellent, but not quite. We were only one of two couples staying at Wild Grass. The starters were good - a mulligatawny soup and a prawn cocktail. The extensive main course, consisting of a range of curries, came out cold. We sent it back. The river fish was a bit over-done, and very bony. Slightly annoyingly, the waiters were more like a team of Turkish carpet salesmen - so attentive that it got rather infuriating. Cutlery was straightened, napkins folded, coats realigned ad nauseam. I am a big fan of good service, but it needs to be much more unobtrusive. There were too many of them, and they hovered too much, which made us feel somewhat uncomfortable. We also had no time to actually digest the courses. Plates were whisked away literally as soon as the fork was laid to rest - I think the whole meal was over in about 35 minutes flat. A shame. We scurried back to our hut.

But, other than that, it was obviously a very impressive place. The owner / general manager, whose name I didn't get, took my feedback very magnanimously when we left, and said it was helpful to hear guest comments - so 10/10 there. He couldn't have been more helpful, and I do understand how challenging it must be to train local staff to meet 5* western expectations. He's done a good job, and was falling over himself to offer us a better return stay.

Aside from that, we didn't have much opportunity to do any of the local activities or enjoy the pool, as the weather was shocking.

A final point - the driver accommodation and food wasn't great. One night he had to sleep in the car as a result of a bug-infested room, which we weren't happy about and said so.

So, in summary, a quality place to stay with some minor issues. I am sure it would have felt radically different in better weather.

This resort is right in the middle of nature, i.e. you will meet nature: lizzards on your way home from the restaurant, frogs expecting you right at the door of your bungalow.... however, this is nature!
We stayed there for 4 nights and found a quiet, comfortable accomodation with extraordinary views to the lake and the the jungle through the great windows on 3 sides of our bungalow.
The hotel benefits from the manager's international experience and his guidance of the staff. The staff itself was very obliging, friendly and dedicated as always ready to go the extra mile (e.g. visit of the local hill/village, explanations of plants and animals). As a visitor of star rated restaurants in Europe we can say that all the dinners served met highest standards.
