“Basic”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2013

Even though much cheaper than nearby resorts, this is very basic without much ambience (though it has been there for 50 years), Sad! Ok, for a night moving on - however then you will find much better options in the nearby home stays both for food and ambience. Only plus really is a/c and the fact that this place is the only one on the strip officially allowed to sell alcohol (however not with the charm of beer in teapots). So go if you are a bigger group staying for 1 night only and won't pay for the resorts, otherwise check out the places just 50 meters away!

Fortunately i only spent one night in this hotel, due to its proximity to the rock but it was completly disgusting: dirty sheets, filthy bathroom and cockarooches. Manager round it funny, its a "jungle hotel madam". Unpolite staff and por breakfast.
Very nice outside but disgusting inside

Stayed at this rest house for 1 night and thankfully only 1 night. Room very dark no hot water and rather dirty as well. Dinner and breakfast poor as well. The only decent thing about staying here is the location as you can climb the rock in the early morning. Would not stay at this rest house again.

We stayed here without having previously booked, because the Lion Rock had let us down by messing up my brother's booking. It was dark when we got down from Sigiriya rock so we were pleased to find somewhere so close. There were no rooms with hot water left, but as we were hot after our climb we were happy with a cool shower. The room was basic, but clean enough and although extremely hot when we arrived, it soon cooled down with the aircon. The bed and pillows were uncomfortable though.
We had dinner and breakfast there, both were freshly cooked for us, plentiful and quite appetising.
This place could be very nice if it had some money spent on it, but until then I would suggest looking for other options.
A big treat the next morning was to see two mahouts scrubbing their elephants in the river nearby.

It was our worst night in Sri Lanka: Cold water, dirty sheets, filthy bathroom (and worms in the shower !!!!), and on top of all, a very unpleasant staff.

We still don't know what happen to the Lonely Planet when they wrote a rather positive comment on that hotel.

Very nice appearance on arrival. We came as part of a group and there was total confusion over the rooms - eventually we were allocated one but in the meantime I was badly bitten on the leg by some vicious insect (different reaction to mosquitos). I understand from other members of the group that the standard varied between rooms. The doubles near the road had no hot water, whereas some had no plug sockets etc. Our room was OK but there was no screening on the bathroom window which was open to the outside and therefore allowed the mosquitos in. Food was very good and cooked especially for our group. Breakfast cooked on request rather than a buffet.

The good point about staying here was that it was only one night. It looks from the outside like a nice place - the veranda and terrace is a nice place to sit and shelter from the rain. The rooms should be better - they have some nice features but just no investment. We had room 109 - it was a fousty den of mould. Just some bleach would have removed the green fungus from the wardrobe! The pillows were about 60 years old and gave up any offer of comfort a long time ago. THe bathroom was pretty grim - The showerhead just caked in limescale - i didnt bother having a morning shower i wasnt quite sure if was going to be cleaner or worse off for it. It was a grim experience. Breakfast was very basic and depressingly it was misty and foggy so no view of the rock to cheer us up but Kumari Grocery down the road is an emporium that sells just about everything - I was searching for 3 days for a needle and thread to repair some clothes and he had a vast range of goods and a needle and thread for 20p! Dont go on the elephant rides - the elephants are shackled and its a sorry sight to see tourists laden on them and they are shuffling along the road.
