“Rooms nice, food ok, wifi poor”
Reviewed 10 January 2014 via mobile

The rooms at the Fresco Water Villa were nice. the buffet dinner ok but it is not served any earlier than 7:30pm. The Wifi is very patchy at times it would only work in reception area..... Pool area very nice. it is safe to go for a walk outside hotel to little village.
Good location/base for the area.

We were passing through the area and were here for an overnight stay. Room was large and clean with good bathroom with plenty of hot water. Separate toilet but no hand towel provided for basin. It did smell somewhat musty, probably because the block of rooms was built over water, which was murky and green looking. Because of late arrival we ate from the buffet dinner in the dining room - not brilliant and food not very hot. Breakfast was adequate, freshly cooked eggs good, but again the pre-prepared dishes were not kept hot. Waiting staff were slow to respond.

Pros:
Large swimming pool (though we didn't have the opportunity to use it).
Comfortable bed
Hot water
Pleasant reception staff
Good location for visiting archeological sites

Cons:
Poor food, not kept properly hot
No comfortable seating area within wifi reception area
Not enough sockets for recharging phones etc

Room Tip: 1st & 2nd floor rooms probably won't smell so musty

We'd stayed here during the month of October. Don't have much to say. The staff was trying their best to provide good service but it wasn't salvaging the poor facilities they have there. One srilankan meal (which is quite average, served with flies all around you) costs 2000 SL! Let me also warn you some of their villas have exposed Asbestos which can be quite bad for your health. The first room we were assigned had a broken asbestos roof which I asked to change.

We stayed for one night when visiting sirigaya and dambulla caves. Rooms were good, spacious and clean. Pool was great and very big. Reception staff were great with good English, waiters less so. Dinner (set menu - catering for coach parties) was poor as was breakfast - hence the low score. Thee isn't really any bars or cafés to go to so most visitors to sirigaya eat in their own hotels.

Stayed one night with a group of 6 adults. The rooms were very spacious with good air-con & nice hot showers. Good size swimming pool and dining area. Dinner was a western set meal which was average. After dark, insects are attracted to the room lights and may fly in. Switching off the front door light seems to do the trick. Breakfast area was full of flies ( could be proximity to jungle area ) so remember to close the serving lids once done. Friendly and helpful staff. Would recommend this hotel as very close to Sirigaya Rock - 10 mins drive away. We left at 6.45 am and were back by 9 am for breakfast and a nice shower before travelling to our next destination.

Stayed our first night after a very long day in a party of seven friends. Looked beautiful, common areas all open sitting over fish ponds and the rooms arranged around the pool and gardens. Had a large ground floor room with three single beds and a separate loo and walk in shower. Managed to get to the pool for a very welcome soak and then we went for the buffet dinner as we were too tired to go anywhere else! Quite basic but very friendly helpful staff who came and bought us umbrellas as it was raining cats and dogs and there is no cover between the rooms and restaurant! I spent the next morning at the hotel as I wasn't well enough to climb Lion Rock and I think I was the only guest left! Everyone looked after me very well and I sat in the reception area for the wifi and the manager bought me coffee and made sure I was ok. The staff spent the morning manicuring the gardens and cleaning leaves out of the pool. I would just say that as has been mentioned, there were a lot of flies over the breakfast and that perhaps net cloches might be a good idea. Definitely would stay there again.

We spent 3 nights at Fresco Water Villa in a standard room on half board basis. The staff can't be faulted on their eagerness to help and were always giving service with a smile. The room was comfortable and clean , although it didn't have coffee and tea making facilities as stated in the brochure. The hotel is in a good location for sight-seeing but we found it a little boring in the evenings after a long day out. The " bar" upstairs was not staffed, so when we wanted a drink before dinner, it felt like we were inconveniencing the staff. The chairs upstairs are not comfortable to sit and relax in and we didn't see anyone else using that area.So after a quick dinner we usually went back to the room. The food was alright and tasty but especially at breakfast there were a lot of flies and the attempt to keep them out by covering everything with cling film failed, as guests usually didn't cover dishes again. Maybe these netted cloches would be better for that purpose. However, these are things that could be sorted with a little thought and planning and didn't spoil our stay enough to give it a bad rating.
