This was our 2nd visit to Vil Uyana. We have truly fallen in love with the place. It is such a peaceful and serene environment. The service was impeccable, yet not intrusive. The staff are very softspoken and respectful - very Sri Lankan. The food was excellent - great choice - both western and Sri Lankan. We stayed in a water villa (both times) which is absolutely gorgeous - it comfortably accommodated 3 adults. Loved the "welcome" and "good night" inscriptions made with the kohomba leaves on the bed - very quaint. Thoughtful touches included umbrellas, straw hats, sarongs and a straw bag in the villas for use during the stay. Mind you the hats came in very handy in 35F heat. The spa treatments were fabulous - the setting is again very relaxing - the treatment rooms open out to the large pond, yet it is screened by a hedge of water rushes - very secluded. A top class hotel to experience the best of Sri Lankan hospitality. What a combination!

We stayed here for just one night, and it wasn't enough! This is just the most fabulous hotel. It is most definitely a proper 5 star.
We were in Sri Lanka for a week, staying on the west coast, and had organised a two day tour to this area with it's rich cultural heritage through a very good friend of mine, Ruchi. He wanted us to stay here as it was a bit special. I looked at the hotels website and in fairness it didn't do it justice at all. We chose an Earth dwelling, as we didn't think we wanted to be near the water, what with mosquitoes other flying beasties, but as it turned out, all the "rooms" are near water, as the hotel complex is built around and in a nature reserve.
I say rooms, ours was a house, and bigger than the house we live in. We had our own swimming pool, totally private, a bathroom which covered the whole of the ground floor which had a Romanesque sunken stone double sized bath, a fish pond with 3 fish, shower, toilet, double wash basins and lots more besides. It was huge.
Upstairs was the bedroom with an ensuite toilet. The bed had a mozzy net which was pulled over at night with the turndown service. The bed faced a panorama window which overlooked our pool and the lake just outside.
Should it rain, and it very well may do, depending on the time of year you go, you can ring reception and they will send a buggy to transport you to the restaurant, if you don't want to use an umbrella!,
There are no buffet meals here, evening meal is a 5 course, breakfast is from a menu and is cooked almost to order. Snacks can be had at lunchtime from a snack menu (and I would recommend the beefburger, it was sublime!)
There are only 26 rooms here, but they are spread over such a large area that there seems many more!
It is an ideal base from which to explore the nearby Lion Rock Fortress and the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and the Golden caves of Dambulla, but also it is the most perfect place to just do nothing.
For me, the highlight of our all-too-brief stay here was seeing Fireflies dancing among the trees around the lake in the evening. I have never seen them before, they were enchanting.
We will have to go back some day, for longer this time it;s so good.

Room Tip: Try and get an Earth dwelling with a private pool, wonderful.

This is awesome place to stay! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I don't enjoy mosquitos and this place (because you are basically in what is wetland area) is high in mosquitos! But it's pretty awesome to walk to breakfast hall and see the most beautiful peacocks roaming around. I wasn't a fan of the big lizard, but he didn't come near me so that was fine. We stayed at the villa with a plunge pool which was awesome but because it was well shaded sometimes cold so we ended up going over to the main lodge pool. This was great because not too many people used it so it was normally just us. The staff was great too becuase I was there with my cousins and their kids and one of the nights we needed to have the food delivered to our villa because the kids were down for a nap. And they did that! So it was the food from our meal package they just charged us a delivery fee. So it was nice to have that flexibility. My nephews also LOVED the open tub - partly because of the wilderness (a bat flew thru one day) and partly because it was a HUGE tub! While the place looks really big (you can call for a ride so trolley type of car comes and picks you and takes you were you need to go) but everything is walking distance around the resort. Also it's not far from Sigiriya Rock and close to a few places to see Elephants. The food wasn't buffet style - so you picked from a menu for all meals. While it was a nice change, at the end of trip we thought buffet may have been better in that it would provide more options and be quicker. Some meals took some time - which was more an issue because we were with the kids. But being it's such an open space I can see why the buffet style would have been an issue. If you go with kids, you may want one member to go earlier to order food for kids, so your kids food comes out quicker. Also they have a decent fitness center - not huge, but again not too many people using it. It's not a cheap place (even if you are trying as a local - which we were) but well worth it if you are going to this area. It's an experience in itself.

The Vil Uyana is a hotel of the highest standard set in large grounds with abundant wildlife. This was one of three properties  visited on an excellent tour organised most capably by Audley Travel in England.

The water suites, though the most expensive, are large in size and spread over two floors. Each suite has its own swimming pool, patio/ sun deck. There is a watchtower and delightful walk through the grounds on which wildlife is likely to be seen.

Room 134 is a short  walk ( or buggy ride in inclement weather)  from the main hotel buildings but is beautifully appointed and in a secluded location. Otter, lizard, peacock were regular visitors to the patio area adjoining the surrounding marshland.

The food is of high quality and variety. Breakfast is substantial and kcooked to order. The evening menu is varied each day and most impressive - a five course meal for two costs approximately £20. Wine is available at reasonable price given all wines are imported as Sri Lanka has no wine industry of its own. Service is impeccable yet not intrusive, the staff most accommodating.

Whatever one asked,  service was delivered promptly and with a smile. I have been fortunate to travel widely and would rate this hotel as one of the most impressive I have had the good fortune to stay in.

Room Tip: If finances allow, select one of the villas with its own swimming pool - well worth the outlay.

My family and I stayed at vil uyana for two nights and as I sit on the balcony over the water at dawn to type this, I find it hard to put into words the serenity and magic of this place. We live in Dubai and this beautiful "hotel" is the complete antithesis of the hustle and bustle of our normal day to day lives. We've seen land and water monitors, terrapins, a plethora or fish and birds...the monkeys, the butterflies and the sounds of the natural world have charmed the stress out of us.  The food has generally been very good, especially dinner on the second night...a five course delight.  The breakfast is well put together with good choices and timely delivery.  My wife had two treatments at the spa and commented that the rooms were beautiful and the treatments good value  A couple of practical points though, it's been mentioned by other reviewers that "some" of the water dwellings do not have pools...actually none of them do.  When booking I requested that our water dwelling have a plunge pool, I received no feedback to state that the dwelling type selected did not have a pool so was a little disappointed to find out that none did when we arrived.  An email back after booking would have out this right. Our children are five and seven and although no one at any stage has made them feel unwelcome..in fact its been quite the opposite, I still would say this probably isn't an ideal hotel for them. In all honesty I think they are too young to truly appreciate it!  They have had a wonderful time, climbed Sigirya rock, been charged by a naughty young bull elephant at minneriya national park, which although a little scary was very well handled by our guide and driver, but besides that and seeing nature in its finest regalia they've been able to watch the everyday tension and stress unwind its grip from their parents - something I hope they remember as fondly as I'm sure we will.
There were a couple of slight negatives that are the reason I've only given a 4 star, my wife thinks I shouldn't mention...and all in all in all it does seem unfair to be critical, but if the management really want to be know a world class resort, then some tiny changes need to happen, mainly just attention to detail in the restaurant. Having said that, we would love to return someday, although probably without the children in tow.

Room Tip: Water villas have no pool, but do have the most wonderful view of the sunrise.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write your review on Trip Adviser while enjoying the light and beauty of dawn. We are happy to know that you had a wonderful time at Jetwing Vil Uyana.
Most of our guests become truly fascinated by the nature as this location provides many opportunities for nature lovers. We also organize nature trails such as bird watching tours, village walks, sightseeing tours and our latest is the Loris watching tour during the night which is only available in our hotel. Our team is our biggest strength. We also have well experienced and well trained spa therapists to provide the best to or guests.

We are glad that you enjoyed our food during your stay, but disappointed to hear that your kids didn’t quite enjoy the property. Water dwellings are one of the most in demand room categories but Water Dwellings are without plunge pools as it sits on the water. We are incredibly apologetic for any inconvenience caused for the lack of communication on our part. As a responsible hotel we have taken all your points in to our consideration and the areas we need to improve on, let us assure you this will be done.

We are truly grateful that the good outweighed any inconvenience and we thank you for your kind words and grace in the matter. Once again thank you for choosing Jetwing Vil Uyana and we eagerly await your next visit as it was a pleasure having you with us.

We had a sublime time here. It was private and quiet. We looked forward to our walk through the beautifully designed grounds to the open air restaurant for each delicious meal. We had the most basic of their rooms and absolutely loved it. We watched birds from our porch each day. This was a respite and treat as we spoiled ourselves by this luxurious stay in the middle of a thirty day discovery of Sri Lanka. Do climb Sigiriya. A visit to Dambulla is easy by car or bus.

Room Tip: Our room was nice and removed. We liked the outdoor shower room. For more money the cabana with a pr...

I've rarely been literally wowed by a hotel but when we arrived with my wife in our bungalow room with private swimming pool we had rarely been as excited in our entire lives! In fact, we were so excited that we went straight back to reception to ask if it was possible to double the length of our stay (and happily for us it was)!
The bungalow, facilities, the hotel itself, its architecture, etc. are absolutely world class.
The only downside of our stay was the food which simply wasn't up to par; which is especially annoying since this is literally the only place where you can eat within miles so you end up being stuck with really bad food (and painfully slow service)

Room Tip: Do choose a room with a private pool
