Stayed 2 nights in late December 2009. Great setting, great villa's, love the plunge pool and bathroom and huge, huge bedroom.

The food was good and the service matched the excellent food.

However the health spa was disorganised and the quality of treatments ordinary and certainly they need to fix the language and treatment skills.

Despite that, would return, just avoid the spa!

Stayed here for 2 nights in August, initially was a little apprehensive as although I like nature am not too keen on sharing my bed with creatures!!!I neednt have worried ,In advance we asked for a room with a mozzie net and a young man came to make up the bed with net prior to it becoming dark. The room was lovely, Food super and having our own plunge pool made it feel like a unique luxury hotel.my Husband took a walk with the naturist and found him interesting and informative.I would definatly recommend this hotel and feel it wqas worth paying a little extra for such a wonderful experience.

This was a beautiful place - we had requested a dwelling in the paddy fields and it was a stunning setting. The interiors are of a very high quality.
We sat in the lounge area of the main block before dinner each evening and watched a breathtaking display of fruit bats flying from their roosts
Food in the restuarant was of a very high standard and staff were very friendly. It was a shame we were the only guests on the first of our nights there but there were another 4 groups of guests on our second night.. It was good to be in a vehicle free area (except for the buggies which transport guests around the place).
The wildlife referred to by other reviewers was absolutely wonderful and the staff were most helpful in both pointing out and identifying the various species of birds.
This hotel deserves all the praise it has been given.
We wished we had booked more time at Vil Uyana.

We stayed two nights in a forest room at the Vil Uyana in October.

The concept and location of this luxurious hotel is brilliant.

They managed to achieve the right balance between quality of service and respect of the environment.

The hotel is set in a wetland and each bungalow is independent. It gives you the amazing feeling to be alone in the middle of the nature.

We stayed in a Forest bungalow offering a private pool (6x3 meters) and a fantastic amount of space (around 200 m2).

The ground floor offers a covered terrace and a fabulous bathroom set around an internal patio. Taking a bath with just the candle light and the sound of nature as music was incredible.

The bedroom is set on the 1st floor, it is spacious and very luminous thanks to the giant windows. You can enjoy the view from one of the two balconies.

All modern amenities are provided including a Bose sound system.

The restaurant is set in the middle of the wetland and you need to call reception for a buggy to get there.

The chef offered modern innovative quality cuisine.

The hotel chose to employ only local people and train them for ethic reasons.

The results achieved is good, the service is very good and people are extremely attentive.

We were delighted by our stay and strongly advise you to try it.

Vil Uyana is one of a kind. This isn't a hotel but a small village made up of cottages facing rice paddies and artificial lakes (oddly called 'tanks' in Sri Lanka). Obviously this means Vil Uyana is literally in the middle of nowhere but this isn't a problem as UNESCO-listed Dambula, Sigyria Rock and Arunadhapura are within easy reach. So after a busy day immersing yourself in culture and climbing that immense rock, there is nothing better than relaxing at Vil Uyana's infinity pool or cottage splash pool (if you're rich enough to afford one of those villa's or lucky enough to get upgraded like we were!).

The hotel list rate is expensive but if you shop around you should be able to get a better deal, especially as tourism is still picking up and hotels are nowhere near full capacity. If you do end up paying the list rate, bear in mind that you're likely to be touring nearby cultural sites for most of the day which doest not leave you a lot of time to take full advantage of the cottage and surroundings.

Our cottage was a two level, lake facing Balinese-style creation with open-air bathroom, shower etc downstairs and bedroom + terrace upstairs. The main reception & restaurant were a 5 minute walk or 1 minute golf buggy away. This building also has a library and bar and includes the infinity pool. Again, amazing style, lay-out and general vibe.

If I have to list one negative point about the place, it would probably be the restaurant. The food is flawless: tasty local dishes, pan-Asian fusion or European style cooking is available and of high quality. However, service is slow and sometimes confused. Breakfast is a la carte and should really be a buffet since most people are on schedule to meet a tour guide in the morning. Other than this, Vil Uyana is perfect.

Entering the small path-way that takes you into Vil Uyana, you already know that something specia is awaiting you. The small 'village' of Vil Uyana is set in the most magnificent natural setting surounded by wet land, forest and paddy fields, and is connected by small gravel roads - so tranquil and picturesque it's almost hard to grasp. Trying to comprehend this amazing sceen gets even harder, when you enter your cottage (even though labeling it as a cottage is a severe understatement!). We stayed four nights in a 'forest dwelling' cottage, and we were absolutely speechless, when we sat down in our own rural paradise. We really cannot find enough positive and praising adjectives to describe this marvelous place.
Staff is genuinely friendly and helpful,l and will do their outmost to make you comfortable and happy. Apart from the staff, you will not encounter many guests. The place is perfectly balanced so you really get the sense of being close to nature: adding to this is the varied wildlife you meet, when you move around: SO many different birds, frogs, liizards, peakcocks, squirrels - not forgetting the Vil Uyana crock! This guy can easily be seen from the restaurant, wich also alows you to see the beautiful Sigiriya Rock in the horizon.
It may not fall under the category of 'budget travelling', but it surely is worth every penny spent! If you ever find yourself in the cultural triangle area, please don't miss the chance to stay a night or two (or three or four...) at this unique place.
